In support of Canada’s Small Modular Reactor Action Planhttps://www.nrcan.gc.ca/our-natural-resources/energy-sources-distribution/nuclear-energy-uranium/canadas-small-nuclear-reactor-action-plan/21183, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) is partnering with NRCan to fund research on SMRs.
Broad categories for proposed research projects include:
* Robust supply chains for SMRs * SMR fuel supply * Radioactive waste management and minimization for SMRs * More granular examples are provided on the NSERC webpage linked in the title above
University researchers must first contact NRCan to discuss their proposed research project and obtain approval before submitting an application to NSERC. To engage NRCan in supporting your research project, request an expression of interest (EOI) form via email to smr-prm@nrcan-rncan.gc.camailto:smr-prm@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca. Please include your area of interest/expertise in your initial email to NRCan to help facilitate the process. EOI forms are due to NRCan by 11:59 pm on April 11, 2023.
Once the proposed research project has been approved by NRCan, eligiblehttps://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/NSERC-CRSNG/Eligibility-Admissibilite/faculty-corpsprof_eng.asp university researchers can apply for an Alliance grant with a duration of 1 to 4 years. The minimum amount that can be requested from NRCan is $20,000 per year, and the maximum is $100,000 per year.

Funding will support applicants in their efforts to address waste generated from SMRs and research related to minimizing SMR waste, as well as the development of supply chains for SMR manufacturing and SMR fuel supply.
Through these grants, NRCan will provide support up to $100,000 per year, for up to four years. NSERC’s contribution will be calculated using the Alliance program’s cost-sharing formula.

• increase training and help produce a new generation of nuclear scientists, engineers and policy-makers.
University researchers must first contact NRCan to discuss their proposed project and obtain approval before submitting an application to NSERC. Le financement appuiera les chercheuses et chercheurs universitaires dans leurs travaux et leurs efforts afin de gérer et de réduire les déchets générés par les PRM. Il soutiendra aussi le développement de chaines d’approvisionnement pour la fabrication de PRM et l’approvisionnement en combustible pour les PRM.
Dans le cadre du partenariat, RNCan versera jusqu’à 100 000 $ par année pendant un maximum de quatre ans à des chercheuses et chercheurs universitaires admissibles. La contribution du CRSNG sera calculée selon la formule de partage des couts d’Alliance.

• renforcer la capacité des universités canadiennes à faire de la recherche sur les PRM;
• accroitre la formation et aider à préparer la prochaine génération de scientifiques, d’ingénieures et ingénieurs et de responsables des politiques dans le domaine du nucléaire.
Dans un premier temps, les chercheuses et chercheurs universitaires doivent communiquer avec RNCan pour discuter de leur projet de recherche et obtenir l’autorisation de présenter une demande de subvention au CRSNG. Afin de solliciter l’appui de RNCan pour le projet, ils doivent demander un formulaire de déclaration d’intérêt par courriel à l’adresse smr-prm@nrcan-rncan.gc.camailto:smr-prm@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca et présenter ce formulaire dument rempli à RNCan au plus tard le 11 avril 2023 à 23 h 59. RNCan invitera un nombre limité de candidates et candidats à présenter une demande de subvention au CRSNG.
