Hello Nursing Students, This is a friendly reminder that voting for the Nursing Students’ Association (NSA) By-Election is now open! All undergraduate students in the College of Nursing are eligible to vote. The election runs from today, October 24th until Tuesday, October 28 at 4:00 p.m. You should have already received an email from UMSU with a personalized voting link. Please check your inbox (and junk folder, just in case) and cast your vote before the deadline! If you didn’t have a chance to run in this By-Election, not to worry, the Annual Election in April will have all positions open again. Donation to Agape Table

Dear Nursing Students, We are Year 4 nursing students currently completing our community clinical at Agape Table in the Spence neighborhood. Agape Table is a not-for-profit charity dedicated to reducing food insecurity and supporting marginalized individuals and families through its free bagged lunch and food bank programs. According to the 2021 Census, 36.6% of residents in the Spence neighborhood live on a low income, compared to the Winnipeg average of 11.5%. Since the pandemic, the need for food assistance has increased significantly, and Agape Table now serves approximately 900 meals each weekday (0700–1100) to community members in need. As winter approaches, many guests who socialize outdoors after receiving their meals face additional challenges in the cold. To help meet their needs, we are organizing a Winter and Hygiene Essentials Donation to support them with dignity and compassion. We are collecting the following items: winter jackets, boots, toques, mitts, socks, duvets, blankets, body wash, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, menstrual care products, and hair brushes. The donation drive will run from October 9th - 31st with two donation bins (one for winter essentials and one for hygiene essentials) located outside the NSA office on the main floor of Helen Glass. Community Hygiene Drive

Dear Nursing Students, We’re reaching out on behalf of two 4th-year nursing students, who are completing their community clinical rotation with the Spence Neighbourhood Association. As part of their community outreach project, they are organizing a Hygiene Drive to support children and youth who access the Spence Neighbourhood Association’s overnight shelter. Donations collected will go directly toward providing essential hygiene items to those in need. The Spence Neighbourhood Association’s WE24 (West End 24Safe Space) Program is a shelter that runs from 11pm to 7am, seven days a week. This unique program offers a safe space to children and youth 12-26 years old that are facing homelessness in the downtown area. The program services 15-20 individuals a night and provides them with meals and shelter. Children and youth that use the shelter are also provided with basic hygiene products. Your support can make a meaningful difference! If you’d like to contribute, please consider donating new, unused hygiene items such as: * Toothbrushes and toothpaste * Soap and body wash * Shampoo and conditioner * Deodorant * Feminine hygiene products * Towels and washcloths * New underwear * New socks We will be collecting donation from October 14th to November 4th. The University of Manitoba Bachelor of Nursing Program implemented a concept-based curriculum in 2016. The effectiveness of conceptual learning, especially in cornerstone courses such as pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment has not been studied. We propose a study using threshold concept theory to identify the threshold concepts of three leveled courses in the Bachelor of Nursing program (NURS2500, 2514, 3512) to understand how concepts in these courses act as portals to professional nursing identity development. Methods: Using a qualitative and quantitative triangulated design we surveyed 300 students and interviewed ten faculty about the troublesome nature of learning concepts in these courses. “Troublesome” means more than struggles with course content and can also include course material that is unsettling, awe inspiring, startling, surprising, or evokes curiosity. Findings: We identified 22 threshold concepts across the three courses from the student data. After layering in the faculty interview data, we identified four overarching concepts: Prioritization, Integrating Pharmacology, Language and Literacy, and Ongoing Assessment. The threshold concepts point to the integrative nature of the material in these courses. Conclusions: Threshold concepts have only been sparsely identified in the nursing profession. This presentation will detail the four threshold concepts identified and discuss how they meet the criteria for threshold concept status. The University of Manitoba Bachelor of Nursing Program implemented a concept-based curriculum in 2016. The effectiveness of conceptual learning, especially in cornerstone courses such as pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment has not been studied. We propose a study using threshold concept theory to identify the threshold concepts of three leveled courses in the Bachelor of Nursing program (NURS2500, 2514, 3512) to understand how concepts in these courses act as portals to professional nursing identity development. Methods: Using a qualitative and quantitative triangulated design we surveyed 300 students and interviewed ten faculty about the troublesome nature of learning concepts in these courses. "Troublesome" means more than struggles with course content and can also include course material that is unsettling, awe inspiring, startling, surprising, or evokes curiosity. Findings: We identified 22 threshold concepts across the three courses from the student data. After layering in the faculty interview data, we identified four overarching concepts: Prioritization, Integrating Pharmacology, Language and Literacy, and Ongoing Assessment. The threshold concepts point to the integrative nature of the material in these courses. Conclusions: Threshold concepts have only been sparsely identified in the nursing profession. This presentation will detail the four threshold concepts identified and discuss how they meet the criteria for threshold concept status. Hello Nursing Students, Dr. Marnie Kramer, Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing, is inviting students to participate in a research study titled: “Identifying Concepts for Mastery Learning in an Undergraduate Nursing Evidence-Informed Practice Course.” We are looking for students who are currently enrolled in, have completed, or have had an academic or voluntary withdrawal from NURS 3550 – Professional Practice 3: Evidence-Based Practice for Health Professionals within the last year. The purpose of this Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) study is to identify areas within the course where students experience the most difficulty, in order to enhance future learning experiences. Study Details: * You will participate in a virtual focus group lasting approximately 1.5 hours. * Total participation time, including reading the consent form and reviewing your transcript, will be about 2 hours. * A $50 e-transfer will be provided as a thank-you for your time and participation. * Sessions will be scheduled at a time convenient for participants. Hello Nursing Students! We hope you are doing well and having a restful Thanksgiving Weekend. My name is Ashley Woods, and I am one of the CanU Representatives for the Nursing Students Association. We are seeking volunteers to support our upcoming CanU Event on Monday, October 27, 2025 17:30 - 20:00 at the College of Nursing Skills Lab! What is CanU? CanU is a Winnipeg-based charitable organization that inspires hope and confidence in the leaders of tomorrow through its out-of-school mentorship program for youth in Grades 5-12 here at the University of Manitoba. There are over 65 Winnipeg schools that participate in our program, with over 500 youth coming to CanU each week and over 800 volunteers that help make it all happen. Why Volunteer? Volunteering with CanU is a meaningful way to make a difference and share the incredible impact nurses have on their communities. CanU Nursing not only brings students together, but also strengthens connections among current nursing students through engaging outreach programs. As a CanU volunteer: * You will guide the CanU students through hands-on scenarios and lesson plans related to different health situations, as well as basic nursing skills. * You will meet people from a variety of positions, including other nursing students and NSA members at the University of Manitoba. * Flexible hours. The program will take place in the evening and will follow your university schedule, which means it will not conflict with exams or holidays. * You will receive co-curricular credit from the University of Manitoba when you volunteer at CanU. * You will gain valuable insight and experience into your future career, as well as gain skills and experience in working with young students. All volunteer experience is recorded and can count toward your experience records—an excellent addition to your resume! More information: * CanU events can be expected to run from 50 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes in length. As a volunteer, you will be expected to stay 30 minutes after events to help with clean up. You are by no means obligated to attend all events and may attend the one(s) you are available for. * If you sign up to volunteer for event(s), we expect your attendance. If you are unable to attend for any reason, kindly let us know via email or our Telegram group chat 24 hours in advance. We depend on our volunteers for a successful event. * We will be hosting a virtual Teams orientation a few days prior to each event.
