The student initiative fund was created to assist in funding various student led activities that benefit the student body including: 1. Capital Projects 2. Furnishings and/or equipment purchases 3. Lectureships 4. Library resources 5. Research 6. Student Awards 7. Message to students - Bachelor of Midwifery Program - Attendance Regulation Update

Please do not reply to this email. Dear Students, In June 2025, the College of Nursing council approved a new Attendance regulation for the Bachelor of Midwifery Program. This new regulation will be in effect starting in the fall 2025 term. Please see the 2025 - 2026 Academic Calendar<https://umanitoba-ca-preview.courseleaf.com/undergraduate-studies/health-sc…> for an outline of academic regulations for the Bachelor of Midwifery Program. The updated Attendance regulation is also included below: Attendance As a professional program, students are expected to display a high academic and professional standard of conduct by punctual and regular attendance in all MDFY courses, including lectures, laboratories, workshops, intensives, placements, and tutorials. In the case of unavoidable circumstances (for example, illness or bereavement), students must contact the course instructor as soon as possible and submit an Absence declaration for each class or clinical day that is missed. Attendance in performance-based courses is essential for students to consistently demonstrate safe practice and meet the requirements of entry level competencies for the College of Midwives of Manitoba. As such, attendance in all aspects of performance-based courses is mandatory, including orientation activities. A student who misses more than seven (7) clinical days in a midwifery clinical courses (MDFY 2090, 3090, 4090, 4100) or an interprofessional clinical course (MDFY 3020), is at risk of failing the course. They will receive a learning contract and will be required to meet with the midwifery program director. A student who misses two (2) intensive classes, which include simulation and/or skills laboratory activities (MDFY 2040, MDFY 2090, 3090, 4090), is at risk of failing the course. They will receive a learning contract and will be required to meet with the midwifery program director. A student who misses one (1) class in an advanced clinical skills course (MDFY 3010, 4010), is at risk of failing the course. They will receive a learning contract and will be required to meet with the midwifery program director. If certificate courses such as NRP, MESP, or FHS are not completed due to absence(s), the student will be required to complete these courses privately, at their own expense. All certificate courses would need to be successfully completed within 8 weeks of the course end date to pass the course. Students are expected to complete 1820 hours of clinical practice time prior to starting Clerkship MDFY 4100. Once student absences in the clinical skills and clinical placement courses exceed 150 hours, students will be required to meet with the midwifery program director and will receive a learning contract. This may delay progression through the program. A student who misses more than two (2) theory classes, including in-person, online, or blended delivery courses, is at risk of failing the course. They will receive a learning contract and will be required to meet with the midwifery program director. Arriving late at a class/seminar/skills lab/clinical, or simulation day and/or leaving early is disruptive to all participants. A disruptive pattern of arriving late and/or leaving early may be considered equivalent to an absence. Message to students - Final Exams

Dear Students, As we approach the final exam period, we'd like to share some important reminders regarding deferred exams. Please note that deferred exams are not automatically granted. All requests must be reviewed and approved by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs, and are considered only in cases of unexpected and extenuating circumstances that prevent you from attending your exam as scheduled. Examples of acceptable reasons include medical or compassionate grounds. If you find yourself unable to write a final exam for these reasons, you must: * Complete a self-declaration as soon as possible. The university is trialing a new declaration form for deferred exam requests, please use this form - Self Declaration<https://apps.powerapps.com/play/e/14d61a02-5d16-ebf2-a4cb-73912242b3f5/a/75…>. * Contact a student advisor within 48 hours of the missed exam by emailing nursing(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:nursing@umanitoba.ca> or booking an appointment with the Student Services Office. * You may be required to submit appropriate supporting documentation, such as a medical note or other relevant materials. * If your request is approved, you and your instructor will receive an email from a Nursing Student Advisor with further instructions. Please be aware that needing more time to study or prepare is not considered an acceptable reason for a deferred exam, nor are travel or vacation plans. We encourage all students to plan ahead and make use of available resources to support their exam preparation. We understand that unexpected things can happen, and we are here to support you if you experience circumstances beyond your control. Sundances and Wellness retreats--Ndinawemaaganag

Students will drive or fly to Cross Lake to be helpers at the Sundance. Camping on-site is encouraged (gear provided if needed), however an apartment may be available. August 21-24 York Landing Sundance. Similar to above. This Sundance was originally scheduled in July and moved to new dates d/t wildfires. Only select this option if you have a connection to the community or have been to a Blacksmith family Sundance. August 21-24 Cree Nation Men's wellness gathering near Grand Rapids. This land-based men's camp provides a mix of large group learning, participating in sweat lodges, individual healing sessions (i.e Reiki, cedar baths), and activities such as making moose calls/traditional bows and arrows. Open to people who identify as men only. August 22-26 The Two-Spirit Sundance is located near Long Plain First Nation/Portage la Prairie. Students can commit to one day or the full weekend. Ideally students will attend one or more meeting in advance with the 2S Sundance community (evening July 26 virtual or in-person) and/or an in person meeting with Elder Charlotte (pm of Aug 12 or 13). This meaning speaks to the connections the students make with the community, each other, and the land and guides the interprofessional and social accountability opportunities within this program for Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The experiences are all directed by the community partners to provide opportunities for students to learn about their community, its people, and health and well-being. Some of the experiences are anchored in a Sundance ceremony, while others include opportunities to spend time in their nursing stations and health centres. All experiences include land based experiences. Some experiences involve camping with the community while in others, students will stay in cabins on the water (and in some you'll do both!). All communities have road access, however in some scenarios students may fly. All expenses (travel, food, accommodations, ceremonial contributions etc) are covered by the RBC Experiential Learning Travel Fund. Sundances:<https://news.umanitoba.ca/sundances-offer-students-crash-course-in-culture/> For the various sundances, we play important helper roles (picking/preparing medicines, cutting trees, building the lodge, helping the kitchen staff with communal meals, assisting with cleanup). In most cases we camp with the community, however there is an option to commute to the Blacksmith Sundance (near Spruce Woods) or stay in a hotel in The Pas for the Opaskwayak. Ideally students will be available from early Friday morning to help build with lodge and then Saturday and Sunday to support/observe/participate in other ceremonies within the sundance. * Blacksmith Sundance (Spruce Woods): June 12-15 * Opaskwayak Sundance (OCN/The Pas): July 3-6 * Shallow Bay Sundance (Grand Rapids): July 10-13 * Sakitowin Sundance (Cross Lake/Pimicikamak): August 14-17 Longer community experiences: There are communities offering one or two-week opportunities: Norway House: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend time in the newly built Health Centre of Excellence, in community programing, and in land-based experiences. Expect to spend time on and around the water and to be in ceremony. Students will be in community for the Indigenous Peoples day. Accommodations are a cabin on the water. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available. Grand Rapids: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend the first week at the nursing station and with the community health programs. The weekend will spent at the Shallow Bay sundance. Week two is scheduled based on opportunities available and student preference (may involve the nursing station, a land based camp, treaty days etc). Accommodations are a cabin on the water during the week and camping on the weekend. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available. Tobacco camp (SERDC)<https://serdc.mb.ca/health/commercial-tobacco-reduction-strategy> in the Whiteshell: Students will be helpers at a camp for youth where the focus is to provide smoking cessation strategies, teachings re: traditional uses of tobacco/cultural practices, and harm reduction/health promotion strategies. Youth come from the communities in the South East Region to Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell; students will stay in cabins. * Norway House: June 16-27 * Grand Rapids: July 7-18, 2025 * Tobacco Camp: August 11-15 Why is this being offered? The RFHS is committed to offering interprofessional education to enhance the provision of integrated care, and is dedicated to actively building and enhancing partnerships to contribute to the communities it serves, including Indigenous Health partnerships, for collaborative care. What costs will be covered? Costs for students' travel, food and accommodations will be covered by the RBC Health Sciences Student Travel Initiative. What is the deadline to apply? The first deadline to apply will be Monday April 7th at which point Lisa will begin confirming matches. The application will continue to stay open as long as spaces remain for students. Where will students stay? How will they get there? Depending on the experience, students will either stay in the professional accommodations at the health centre, a hotel, or a cabin in the area. If attending a sundance it is likely you will camp with the community. Camping equipment is available if needed. Students will either fly or drive to the experience; carpooling will occur where possible. Will students receive credit for this experience? In most cases these experiences do not contribute to a specific course, however can contribute to your U of M Experiential Record. For UGME students, the equivalent of a 2-week experience is approved as an "Early Exposure". Students who complete this interprofessional practice experience will also receive a certificate of participation upon request. Who can apply? Students enrolled in the health profession programs in any of the five Colleges of the RFHS who have completed at least one term of their program are eligible are prioritized. With each ceremony done, there were many lessons to be learned, but one important lesson was how well the non-pharmacological intervention assisted the Indigenous people in healing and coping with their grief. These ceremonies were beautiful and moving, and I felt honored to be a part of them. The value of such spiritual practice was clear to me and helped show me that there is a great need for our society to support people to look after their own and their community's spiritual wellbeing. This weekend was one of the most memorable experiences I have had throughout my time at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. There were many powerful learnings that I would have never experienced inside a classroom nor reading through books. It was evident to me that a sense of belonging in community, language, culture and traditions have a huge role to play in healing. If you are considering this experience but are on the fence, just go for it... this experience has been one of the most valuable to me as a person and professional, as it has given me insight into Indigenous culture, health care in the North, and interprofessional practice that I could not have gotten anywhere else.
