Nursing Grand Rounds April 8th noon to 1 pm on zoom Dr. Kathryn Chachula - All Welcome!
by Diana McMillan 01 Apr '25

01 Apr '25

Extending a warm welcome to you and your colleagues to join us at the Catalysts for Care 2025 Nursing Grand Rounds Speaker Series! [A person wearing glasses and smiling AI-generated content may be incorrect.] Date: April 8th, 2025, 12:00 - 1:00 pm, ZOOM presentation. Central Time Zone-DST Presenter: Dr. Kathryn Chachula, RN BN MN PhD CCNE Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Studies, Brandon University, MB. Title: Supporting the mental health of students and new nursing graduates in Manitoba: Research findings and recommendations. ZOOM LINK: https://ca01web.zoom.us/j/62193270785?pwd=IqsaCZSB24MLxvDBTlPNf4EmPEJ82Y.1 Abstract: Students in undergraduate nursing and psychiatric nursing programs are future professionals entering a health care climate rife with violence and anxiety-provoking life-and-death experiences (Chachula & Varley, 2022). Studies conducted with students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing programs at Brandon University reveal the presence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and compassion fatigue (Chachula & Ahmad, 2022). This is further aggravated by student reports of racism, hostility, and incivility with students considering leaving their program of study (Chachula et al., 2022) and 29.4% of young nurses in Manitoba leaving the profession as reported by the Montreal Economic Institute (Faubert, 2024). Findings from quantitative and qualitative research projects that are of significance to nurse educators, student clinical placement sites, and employers of new graduates will be discussed with proposed recommendations to address the related findings. There is a need for nurse educators and employers to develop strategies, policy, and guidelines that attend to PTSD, incivility, and transition-to-practice in the student and new graduate population in Manitoba. Upcoming Presentations Tuesday May 13th, 2025 12:00 - 1:00 pm, Central Time Zone. Important Information About Deferred Final Exams
by Thara Wijewardana 31 Mar '25

31 Mar '25

Dear Students, As we approach the final exam period, we'd like to share some important reminders regarding deferred exams. Please note that deferred exams are not automatically granted. All requests must be reviewed and approved by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs, and are considered only in cases of unexpected and extenuating circumstances that prevent you from attending your exam as scheduled. Examples of acceptable reasons include medical or compassionate grounds. If you find yourself unable to write a final exam for these reasons, you must: * Complete a self-declaration as soon as possible. * Contact a student advisor within 48 hours of the missed exam by emailing nursing(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:nursing@umanitoba.ca> or booking an appointment with the Student Services Office. * You may be required to submit appropriate supporting documentation, such as a medical note or other relevant materials. * If your request is approved, you and your instructor will receive an email from a Nursing Student Advisor with further instructions. Please be aware that needing more time to study or prepare is not considered an acceptable reason for a deferred exam, nor are travel or vacation plans. We encourage all students to plan ahead and make use of available resources to support their exam preparation. We understand that unexpected things can happen, and we are here to support you if you experience circumstances beyond your control. If you're unsure whether your situation qualifies, please reach out to the advising team as soon as possible. All the best during the final exam period, Nicole Nicole Harder, RN, PhD, CHSE, CCSNE Associate Professor & Associate Dean Undergraduate Programs, College of Nursing Mindermar Professor in Human Simulation, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences University of Manitoba 281 Helen Glass Centre for Nursing Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2 Tel: 204-474-6714 nicole.harder(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:nicole.harder@umanitoba.ca> Editor in Chief - Simulation in Healthcare Upcoming absences: March 12-19, 2025 [cid:image001.png@01DBA23F.7EAAE550] My office is located on original lands of Anishinaabeg, Ininiwak, Anisininewuk, Dakota Oyate and Dene, and on the National Homeland of the Red River Métis.
