Title: Frequency and impact of potentially traumatic events on hospital security personnel.][cid:image006.jpg@01DC8C4C.CE5E1E30] ZOOM LINK: https://ca01web.zoom.us/j/61088144803?pwd=O3OecCzEaaSxM5UiLhGtVAjW7rGuAT.1 Abstract: Hospital security personnel (HSP) operate at the intersection of public safety, healthcare, and emergency response in large tertiary care hospitals, yet little is known about their exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTE) or the resulting psychological impacts. This research is based on a comprehensive review of the literature addressing workplace trauma exposure, psychological outcomes across populations, coping styles, social supports, and the unique role of HSP in Manitoba, Canada. Guided by four research questions and six hypotheses, a quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using standardized measures with 32 active HSP members at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Findings indicate that HSP experience high levels of trauma exposure with significant psychological consequences: nearly 60% reported symptoms consistent with depression, and 37% reported symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Consistent with previous research, supportive workplace social environments were significantly and negatively correlated with trauma-related psychological injury. Examining PTE exposure among HSP highlights a unique occupational role that shares characteristics of both public safety and healthcare sectors. This research contributes to the limited literature on HSP and provides recommendations for future study. Clinical and administrative implications include improved education, enhanced understanding of effective coping strategies, recognition of the importance of social support, and greater cultural and organizational awareness of PTE impacts within hospital security workplaces. Hello Nursing Students, Happy New Year! We hope you’re doing well and had a restful and restorative Winter Break. My name is Ashley Woods, and I am one of the CanU Representatives for the Nursing Students Association (NSA). We are currently seeking volunteers to support our upcoming CanU Nursing Event on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 18:00–19:30 in the Helen Glass Skills Lab at the College of Nursing. We will be teaching high school students Grades 11-12 for this event. What is CanU? CanU is a Winnipeg-based charitable mentorship program for youth in Grades 5–12, run here at the University of Manitoba. Each week, 500+ youth from 65+ Winnipeg schools attend CanU programming, supported by 800+ volunteers across the city. CanU Nursing brings this mission into healthcare outreach by engaging youth in interactive clinical learning and inspiring future health leaders. Why Volunteer with CanU Nursing? Volunteering is a meaningful way to contribute to your community, connect with fellow nursing students, and strengthen your confidence in teaching and clinical skills. Using a provincial survey (n=510) and interviews (n=50), researchers found that PENs were significantly more likely to work in lower-tier positions and experience workplace microaggressions. Both groups faced discrimination and workplace transition challenges, but Canadian-educated Filipino nurses had better career advancement opportunities and access to support networks. The findings highlight that while both groups encounter barriers, PENs face additional systemic challenges affecting their career progression, necessitating targeted interventions like mentorship programs and increased Filipino representation in leadership roles.
