Title: Nurses’ attitudes towards patients who use substances in the hospital setting. ZOOM LINK: https://ca01web.zoom.us/j/68302318816?pwd=RjBNSmtGTnRvU3RoYVhSUGtYU0N3QT09 Abstract: Nurses, as the primary providers of 24-hour care, are crucial in observing, recognizing, and intervening with patients who use substances in the hospital setting. According to the literature, nurses, despite their central role as care providers, often harbor negative attitudes toward patients who use substances, subsequently leading to a perceived lack of empathy and the manifestation of discriminatory behaviors. This presentation will examine the persistence and impact of these negative attitudes to highlight the challenges that patients who use substances face in accessing respectful care. As self-reported by nurses, the factors contributing to these attitudes include a paucity of knowledge about substance use and the lack of institutional policies and/or procedures to guide nurses while they are caring for this patient population. Recommendations for improving care include enhancing nurses’ professional development through targeted education and revising and/or implementing organizational policies to support a more patient-centred and pragmatic approach. This presentation will advocate for transformative changes within health care organizations to enhance the readiness of nurses to care for patients who use substances while simultaneously cultivating a supportive environment for these individuals. FALL 2024 LOCKER SALES

Hello Students, I hope you are all doing well. I am sending this email to provide some information about the lockers. The locker rental term ends on September 30th, 2024. If you purchased a locker this summer term, please ensure you clear out your lockers by 4:30pm on December 20th, 2024. This is to ensure that the lockers are available for incoming students on the first day of classes. I also want to let you know that locker sales for the new term will begin on SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2024 AT 12 noon, and not before that , and you can purchase them online through the NSA website only using either your debit or credit card. Please be sure to visit our website and take advantage of this opportunity to secure a locker for the upcoming term. The lockers cost $15 per term and are in the nursing locker room and along the hallway in the basement floor of the Helen glass building. There are limited lockers available so if you go to the website and there are no lockers in the dropdown menu that means they have all been purchased. Become a CanU Volunteer!

Hello everyone, My name is Shirel Finkelshtein and together with my partner Sarah Livingstone we are the CanU NSA representatives for the CanU Nursing Program. Thank you to all of those that visited our booth during the Summer 2024 intake orientation. We appreciate you showing interest in becoming a CanU Volunteer and hope that your semester is going well! I would like to give you a brief introduction about CanU so that you can have a better understanding of the program. CanU is a Winnipeg-based charitable organization that inspires hope and confidence in the leaders of tomorrow through its out-of-school mentorship program for youth in Grades 5-12 here at the University of Manitoba. There are over 65 Winnipeg schools that participate in our program, with over 500 youth coming to CanU each week and over 800 volunteers that help make it all happen. As a CanU volunteer: * You will guide the CanU students through hands-on scenarios and lesson plans related to different health situations, as well as basic nursing skills. * You will meet people from a variety of positions, including other nursing students and NSA members at the University of Manitoba. * Flexible hours. The program will take place in the evening and will follow your university schedule, which means it will not conflict with exams or holidays. * You will receive co-curricular credit from the University of Manitoba when you volunteer at CanU. * You will gain valuable insight and experience into your future career, as well as gain skills and experience in working with young students. For this Summer term, Sarah and I have been planning two special CanU sessions that will take place in our HGC skills lab. We have finalized the program and are now ready to recruit our volunteers! The summer events will take place on July 16th and July 17th. The events will be programed for the Aspire group (grades 7-9). We are expecting up to 20 students for each event, therefore we would love to have as many volunteers as possible! Both sessions will be 1.5 hours in length, and as a volunteer you will be there from 5:00pm till 7:00pm (half an hour after the events end to help with clean up). As a volunteer, you are not obligated to attend both events and may attend only one (both will follow the same program). After recruitment, we will be inquiring about which day(s) volunteers will be able to attend. We will also be hosting a vertual orientation on the evening of July 15th to help our volunteers be prepared for the program. Further details will be provided after recruitment. Manitoba Student Aid update

Hello all, I have been in discussions with UM's Student Enrolment office, which is the office that liases with Manitoba Student Aid. The issue that BMid students are being assessed at an 80% full time equivalent, when applying for loans, is being worked through. I am aware the loan application for spring/summer term opened last week and have been advised you will very likely be assessed at 100%. I will confirm this soon. Hello Students, Please see the message below on behalf of the Agape Table. Please be aware of other community donation initiatives in front of the NSA office (Including mestrual products and non perishable food items)! Dear Nursing Students, We hope this message finds you well. We are a group of four fourth-year nursing students currently completing our community rotation at Agape Table, an organization that provides essential support to many individuals in our community. Over the past few weeks, we have had the privilege of working closely with the guests at Agape Table, witnessing firsthand the challenges they face daily. As future healthcare providers, we are deeply committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve. We believe that community is essential, and it's crucial for us to support and take care of each other. One of the most requested items at Agape Table is water bottles, especially with the hot summer months approaching. Adequate hydration is vital for everyone, and we want to ensure that all our guests have access to clean, refreshing water. To address this need, we are raising funds to purchase a pallet of Kirkland water bottles from Costco, which contains 48 cases of water. The funds we raise will be used directly to buy and deliver these water bottles to Agape Table. We have set up a GoFundMe page, ensuring that the money will be sent straight to Agape Table, making the process transparent and straightforward. We are reaching out to the nursing student body to ask for your support in this important endeavor. Pancreatic, esophageal, and hepatobiliary cancers are known for heavy symptom burden and rapid disease progression necessitating expedited, rather than delayed, access to appropriate health services. CancerCare Manitoba has instituted an early palliative care program allowing access to symptom management, information on diagnosis, prognosis, potential treatment options and eligibility, health system navigation, and discussion of goals of care and advance care planning, from the time of referral to the cancer centre. This new model of care in advanced cancers began with pancreatic cancer and is expanding. Patients report an excellent standard of patient centered care and data shows decreased unwanted invasive procedures and appointments alongside increased access to the support best aligning with patients’ goals of care. Birth Trauma Training Needs: Research Participation Request

Hello, Please see below for information about a new project being conducted by the Health Information and Exchange Laboratory and the Hearts and Minds Laboratory at the University of Manitoba, called Recognizing and Responding to Birth Trauma: The Development and Pilot Evaluation of a Brief Online Training Intervention for Canadian Health Care Providers. We are interested in hearing about the training needs of physicians, nurses, and midwives in recognizing and responding to their patients’ needs after birth trauma. If you are a professional or student in these fields, we invite you to complete a 15 – 30-minute online survey (you can save and return later) asking about your background and training needs. Those who complete the online survey can enter a raffle for one of four $25 e-gift cards to Amazon. The findings will inform the development of a training intervention tailored to the overall needs of physicians, nurses, midwives, and students in these fields.
