Hello Nursing Students!
We hope you are doing well and having a restful Thanksgiving Weekend.
My name is Ashley Woods, and I am one of the CanU Representatives for the Nursing Students Association. We are seeking volunteers to support our upcoming CanU Event on Monday, October 27, 2025 17:30 - 20:00 at the College of Nursing Skills Lab!
What is CanU?
CanU is a Winnipeg-based charitable organization that inspires hope and confidence in the leaders of tomorrow through its out-of-school mentorship program for youth in Grades 5-12 here at the University of Manitoba. There are over 65 Winnipeg schools that participate in our program, with over 500 youth coming to CanU each week and over 800 volunteers that help make it all happen.
Why Volunteer?
Volunteering with CanU is a meaningful way to make a difference and share the incredible impact nurses have on their communities. CanU Nursing not only brings students together, but also strengthens connections among current nursing students through engaging outreach programs.
As a CanU volunteer:
* You will guide the CanU students through hands-on scenarios and lesson plans related to different health situations, as well as basic nursing skills. * You will meet people from a variety of positions, including other nursing students and NSA members at the University of Manitoba. * Flexible hours. The program will take place in the evening and will follow your university schedule, which means it will not conflict with exams or holidays. * You will receive co-curricular credit from the University of Manitoba when you volunteer at CanU. * You will gain valuable insight and experience into your future career, as well as gain skills and experience in working with young students.
All volunteer experience is recorded and can count toward your experience records—an excellent addition to your resume!
More information:
* CanU events can be expected to run from 50 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes in length. As a volunteer, you will be expected to stay 30 minutes after events to help with clean up. You are by no means obligated to attend all events and may attend the one(s) you are available for.
* If you sign up to volunteer for event(s), we expect your attendance. If you are unable to attend for any reason, kindly let us know via email or our Telegram group chat 24 hours in advance. We depend on our volunteers for a successful event.
* We will be hosting a virtual Teams orientation a few days prior to each event. This is to help volunteers feel prepared for the program and address any questions. These are expected to be ~1 hour in length.
Our next event is October 27, planned for 17:30 – 20:00 at University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus. We will be conducting a focused respiratory assessment, puffer administration, chest tube education, and vital signs. We appreciate all the help we can get!
