Title: Nurses’ attitudes towards patients who use substances in the hospital setting.

Abstract: Nurses, as the primary providers of 24-hour care, are crucial in observing, recognizing, and intervening with patients who use substances in the hospital setting. According to the literature, nurses, despite their central role as care providers, often harbor negative attitudes toward patients who use substances, subsequently leading to a perceived lack of empathy and the manifestation of discriminatory behaviors. This presentation will examine the persistence and impact of these negative attitudes to highlight the challenges that patients who use substances face in accessing respectful care. As self-reported by nurses, the factors contributing to these attitudes include a paucity of knowledge about substance use and the lack of institutional policies and/or procedures to guide nurses while they are caring for this patient population. Recommendations for improving care include enhancing nurses’ professional development through targeted education and revising and/or implementing organizational policies to support a more patient-centred and pragmatic approach. This presentation will advocate for transformative changes within health care organizations to enhance the readiness of nurses to care for patients who use substances while simultaneously cultivating a supportive environment for these individuals.
