Luter is a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Law, McGill University. His research focuses on the intersection of international trade law and environmental protection.

Specifically, Luter’s thesis explores the processes by which member states of the World Trade Organization (WTO) are carving out widening regulatory autonomy, beyond the perceived confines of WTO jurisprudence, to adopt trade policy measures having environmental protection objectives. The project examines the significance of these developments for Border Carbon Adjustments proposals.

What are you most excited about this fellowship?

Rarely does knowledge from research publications reach policymakers in a timely manner. I am particularly excited about the opportunity to work closely with leading experts who may help bridge the “knowledge to action” gap and the prospect of working with a transdisciplinary team around untangling the complexities of food systems.

Kushank is passionate about the bi-directional relationship between food systems and climate change: how food systems can curb climate change, and systemic risks posed by climate change to food systems. Trained as a disciplinary geoscientist, he pivoted from utilizing his skills in resource extraction towards the interdisciplinarity required to work on problems at the intersection of food-water-climate. Before starting his PhD, Kushank worked both with grassroot and research organizations.

Currently pursuing his PhD at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia, Kushank studies systemic climate risks and food system resilience. Some of his projects include understanding cross-border climate vulnerabilities to food supply, defining and measuring novel weather risks using a bottom-up approach, and on-farm climate action in the Canadian context.

Melat Lukas Adde is a PhD Candidate in the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Saskatchewan. Her research focuses on agricultural innovations and agri-food supply chains.

Her current PhD research applies experimental and behavioral economics to explore the pathways and impediments to adoption of new agricultural technology.

What are you most excited about this fellowship?

CAPI´s purpose of bringing creative solutions to policy makers is inspiring, since the solutions that the world urgently needs can only be developed through collaborative and multidisciplinary work. Being part of the CAPI fellows’ program will enhance my potential to take part in multisectoral conversations, and to share my research results to a broad audience.

Maria Carolina Romero Pereira is originally from Colombia, where she graduated as a Civil Engineer. Carolina has a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and Project Management from the University of Leeds (UK), and she is currently a Ph.D. student in Sustainability Management at the University of Waterloo.

Through her experience, Carolina became interested in sustainability matters, inspired by the possibility of improving lives while finding environmentally friendly solutions and generating opportunities to empower communities. Carolina's experience includes teaching at the bachelor's and master's levels, research, director and jury of master’s theses, environmental consultancy, curriculum design, academic direction, project coordination, and site supervision.

Luter est candidat au doctorat à la Faculté de droit de l'Université McGill. Ses recherches portent sur l'intersection du droit commercial international et de la protection de l'environnement.

Plus précisément, la thèse de Luter explore les processus par lesquels les États membres de l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC) se taillent une autonomie réglementaire élargie, au-delà des limites perçues de la jurisprudence de l'OMC, pour adopter des mesures de politique commerciale mondiale ayant des objectifs de protection de l'environnement. Le projet examine l'importance de ces développements pour les propositions d'ajustement à la frontière pour le carbone.

Qu'est-ce qui vous enthousiasme le plus dans cette bourse ?

Les connaissances issues des publications de recherche parviennent rarement aux décideurs. Je suis particulièrement enthousiasmé par l'opportunité de travailler en étroite collaboration avec des experts de premier plan qui peuvent aider à combler le fossé « de la connaissance à l'action » et la perspective de travailler avec une équipe transdisciplinaire pour démêler les complexités des systèmes alimentaires.

Kushank est passionné par la relation bidirectionnelle entre les systèmes alimentaires et le changement climatique : comment les systèmes alimentaires pourraient être adaptés pour freiner le changement climatique et le défi complexe posé par le changement climatique aux systèmes alimentaires mondiaux et régionaux. Formé en tant que géoscientifique disciplinaire, il est passé de l'utilisation de ses compétences en extraction de ressources à l'interdisciplinarité requise pour travailler sur des problèmes à l'intersection de l'alimentation, de l'eau et du climat.

Poursuivant actuellement son doctorat à l'Institute for Resource, Environment and Sustainability de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique, Kushank étudie les systèmes alimentaires et d'utilisation des terres, en se concentrant sur les transformations durables et résilientes. L'objectif de l’ICPA d'apporter des solutions créatives aux décideurs politiques est inspirant, car les solutions dont le monde a un besoin urgent ne peuvent être développées que grâce à un travail collaboratif et multidisciplinaire. Faire partie du programme des boursiers de l’ICPA renforcera mon potentiel à participer à des conversations multisectorielles et à partager mes résultats de recherche avec un large public.
