The Faculty of Graduate Studies, with the UM Libraries and the Learning Technologies Centre, encourages you to attend an information session about copyright.

Anyone who plans on incorporating a substantial portion of a copyrighted work or a complete copyrighted work (e.g., a journal article, photograph, table, map, diagram, graph, figure or poem) into their research or thesis must have the permission of the copyright holder to do so. Posting material to an online course or the Libraries' E-Reserve system, adapting or modifying a work requires permission as well. In these instances, citing material is not enough. Permission is required whether the copyrighted material came from the Web, a book, a journal or a government source. Who would benefit from attending a session?

* Anyone using copyrighted material in or for their research * Graduate students writing or preparing to write their theses * Faculty, instructors, lecturers, TAs, and others posting copyrighted material to ANGEL, JUMP, other Web sites or repositories such as MSpace * Faculty, department heads, and graduate chairs advising and supervising graduate students * Graduate program assistants, administrative assistants, office assistants, and any staff assisting faculty or graduate students with theses, research and posting materials online.

You will need speakers or earbuds. A microphone will be useful if you want to speak during the presentation. You will, however, be able to communicate without a microphone by typing a question or comment on the screen.
