Based on 2023, it is expected that we will have access to the seed storage and processing building for 15-minute intervals from April 1 to mid-July. A group of 8 technicians met with Yvonne Lawley and Curt McCartney to walk through the seed storage, processing room, grinding room, and drying area on February 21st for an hour. We identified action items that must take place for the Department to be better prepared for the expected closure of the processing and seed storage building on March 31st, 2024. The attached document should be reviewed by technicians and professors from each program that works out of the Point in early March. Feedback and questions should be directed to Yvonne Lawley and Curt McCartney. This plan will also be reviewed during the Departmental technician meeting on March 7th and at Department Council on March 6th. At these meetings, we will be asking for volunteers to assist with final preparations at the Point during the week of March 25th. Point Walkthrough and Planning Meeting

The following is being sent on behalf of Yvonne Lawley: _______________________________ Thanks to the many technicians and academics that met on Thursday last week to discuss grain drying needs for the new Prairie Crops and Soils Research Facility. We were able to provide the needed feedback to the architects and consultants to move planning forward. At that meeting, several questions came up about access to seed storage and processing facilities at the Point this coming spring following last year's closure of the building due to riverbank instability when river levels were high. In response, Curt McCartney and I are inviting technicians and academics working at the Point to a building walkthrough and planning session on Wednesday February 21st at 2:45. We will meet in the coffee room at the Point, walk through the Seed Storage and processing area, and develop a list of actions times with timelines that will help us to be as prepared as we can for the uncertainties of this coming spring. Those that are interested but unable to attend this session on short notice are invite to contact Yvonne Lawley and Curt McCartney by email by Friday Feb 23rd to receive a copy of the action items or to provide written input. Meeting request: Grain drying needs for new Facility

The following is being sent on behalf of Yvonne Lawley: ____________________________________________ The steering committee for the new Prairie Crops and Soils Research Facility met last week with the team of architects. Mary Meleshko and Yvonne Lawley, who are representing the department on this committee, need input from the technicians and academics that will be drying grain samples in this new facility to meet your needs. To provide this needed input, please join us for a meeting on Thursday February 15th at 10:30 in Rm 310 Plant Science. Every lab group that works with grain samples should send at least one person to attend this meeting. If no representative can attend, please email written comments to Yvonne and Mery ahead of the meeting for items 1 and 2 below. During the meeting we will be asking for input on: 1. The type of grain drying system that would best meet your programs needs: * Traditional grain drying beds like we have in the existing point facility that are set up year round. * In-ground air drying floor (similar to the floor of a large grain bin) that would dry bags of grain within perforated plastic bins (to reduce transferring samples multiple times) * Mobile grain drying beds that get setup and taken down during peak grain drying periods. 1. An estimate of the number of drying beds (a) or bins (b) that each program would ideally require within the new facility 1.
