Establishment of the Hilary Kaufman Lerner Memorial Fund
and
Initiation of the HKL Fund Grants Program for Student Research-Trainees in the area of multiple sclerosis and related demyelinating disorders
The Fund
The Fund has been established in memory of Hilary Kaufman Lerner who died in 2016 of complications associated with a decades-long, progressively debilitating, course of multiple sclerosis that she bore with courage and unstinting determination. Friends and family have contributed to an endowment fund to provide grants to student research trainees in aid of research and advanced studies on multiple sclerosis and related demyelinating disorders.
The Grants Program
• The HKL Fund Grants Program is designed to assist grant recipients to defray out-of-pocket expenses incurred by them in undertaking his or her activities in research or advanced studies. These may include expenses related to special: special materials and supplies; fees of various kinds (e.g. access to scholarly materials, courses beyond the usual course of study; registration at scientific conferences).
• Granted funds may also be used to defray travel expenses incurred in attending conferences at which the student trainee will be making a presentation; or in visiting other centres to learn a new technique or collaborate.
• To be eligible for grants from the Fund, student research-trainees must be undertaking or planning to undertake research or advanced studies under the aegis of one or more Colleges of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Manitoba. Note: College of Dentistry students must be nominated by a faculty member or supervisor from the College of Medicine, Nursing Pharmacy or Rehabilitation Sciences.
• The areas of research and study involved may, without limitation, include phenomena at the molecular, cellular, clinical, population or health system level
• Candidacy for a grant from the Fund will be based on nomination by a faculty member or supervisor who is an academic member of a College or Colleges under whose aegis the nominee’s research or studies are to take place, or are already taking place.
• Nominations require the written approval or endorsement of the relevant Colleges
Nominations for a grant from the fund, tenable as of January 2020, are being requested. Nominations should be submitted no later than October 25, 2019 to Dr. Jude Uzonna at:
