Dear Colleagues:
Recent events have called attention to increasing global political instability and the importance of safety during international travel. Following the recent advice of Foreign Affairs Minister Freeland, we want to advise that the university community follow Government of Canada travel advisories at all times.
As such, until more information is available, university-related student and staff travel to areas with changing travel advisories, such as China, is to be postponed. Faculty may wish to limit travel as well.
Our hope is that the situation will be resolved soon, and that this will not impact our many valued partnerships with Chinese institutions. If communications with partner institutions are required in order to explain why travel is being postponed, the International Centremailto:kennis.fung@umanitoba.ca?subject=Advice%20on%20communications%20with%20Chinese%20partners%20 is available to support.
We encourage faculty, staff and students to use the following resources for all travel:
* International SOShttp://umanitoba.ca/research/international_centre/emergency_contact.html - This is University of Manitoba's first point of contact in an emergency and a valuable resource for pre-travel advice. It provides comprehensive medical and travel security assistance service. They are available 24/7, 365 days per year, and free to faculty, students, and staff. You can call our dedicated numberhttp://umanitoba.ca/research/international_centre/emergency_contact.html, register onlinehttp://umanitoba.ca/research/international_centre/emergency_contact.html and/or request your free International SOS card from the International Centrehttp://umanitoba.ca/research/international_centre/emergency_contact.html. * Registration of Canadians Abroadhttps://travel.gc.ca/travelling/registration - this is a free service that allows the Government of Canada to quickly locate you and provide support in case of an emergency abroad. Sincere thanks.
