In this workshop you'll explore these questions alongside other members of the Riddell Faculty and learn about key principles of experiential learning pedagogy. About the presenter: Gerardo (Gera) is a Faculty Specialist in the Office of Experiential Learning at The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. Soft as Bones: A Journey Through Story, Survival, and Becoming In Soft as Bones, Cree and Métis author Chyana Marie Sage unearths the bones of her own story - one marked by intergenerational trauma, survival, and the radical act of healing through words. From growing up in the Prairies with a father entangled in the justice system to becoming the first ever Indigenous graduate from Columbia University's Creative Nonfiction program, Chyana's path is a testament to resilience, reclamation, and the transformative power of education and storytelling. In this talk, Chyana will read from her acclaimed debut memoir and reflect on her journey to publication - from the first drafts written in quiet defiance to the moment her story found a home with House of Anansi Press. She will also share how her academic and creative paths continue to intertwine in her current work with Indspire, where she amplifies Indigenous voices and stories across the country. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan, with research focused on the economic history of Indigenous peoples, labour economics, and public policy. Dr. Gillezeau is a fellow at the Broadbent Institute and co-director of the Canadian Economics Association's Indigenous Economics Study Group. Hello all This is just a reminder that the building network will change, and what this means for you. For those who have Windows Desktops or Laptops that connect through Wired Ethernet, and login with your UMNet ID: If/When you sign in with your UMnet ID and password, you should automatically connect to the network without having to do any extra steps. Your device will connect and you won't see any changes. For those who have Windows Desktops or Laptops that connect through Wired Ethernet, and login with a local account: You should see a dialog box pop up asking you to authenticate with your Umnet ID and password. If you do not see a dialog box, navigate through START-SETTINGS-NETWORK AND INTERNET-ETHERNET, you should see your connection information with SIGN IN at the top. Choose this and sign in with your UMnet ID. If your base UMnet id doesn't work, login with ad\UMnetid and your password instead. For those who have Apple devices (iMacs, Macbook Pro, etc) who connect through Wired Ethernet, regardless of how you log in. You should get a dialog box, similar to when you connect to Wireless, asking you to log in, so use your UMnet ID and password, and you should be able to connect. For those who have Linux based devices, please navigate to this page to set up 802.1x if you need assistance. [cid:image002.png@01DC4E58.8E79AE60] This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst, Associate Vice-President (Research) Good afternoon, The Associate Vice President (Research) is pleased to announce that there are a few spaces left in the health-focused STARS - SSHRC Training and Resources Series, presented by Dr. Ruth Knechtel, Jackie Cooney-Birch, and Sandra Jezik. Therefore, we are opening the series up to all full-time faculty members eligible to hold Tri-Agency grants. Attached is a brief outline of sessions. STARS 2025 will take place in person on Bannatyne campus and will focus on SSHRC grants for health researchers but will still be highly relevant to all SSHRC researchers. It will consist of two sessions (on November 12th and 14th, 2025). These sessions will tackle the most challenging sections of a typical SSHRC grant application as well as strategies to strengthen impact. STARS is not geared to one specific SSHRC program, but rather will provide an overview of SSHRC's grants and best practices for success. When Dr. Knechtel (creator of STARS) delivered a similar program at a different U15 University, 75% of attendees who applied for the SSHRC Insight Grant and Insight Development Grant were successful - This was 35% higher than the national success rate for IGs and 30% higher than the national success rate for IDGs at the time. Notes (again!) re proposal review deadlines and overhead rates

Dear all, It was brought to my attention again that there were still confusions about how proposal reviews are being handled. So below are a few quick reminders re the now-not-too-new practices established and enforced by the ORS/VPRIO. - Internal review deadline = 14 work days before the agency/sponsor deadline for any and all types of externally-funded proposals (grants, contracts, research agreements). This is the deadline you submit to the Riddell Faculty (Sadia and me) your next-to-final version of the proposal (including budgetary details) and a FAAF that has already been signed by your Dept. Head. We will review, sign the FAAF, and then submit your package to ORS, on your behalf, for their compliance review. You are allowed (and encouraged!) to keep polishing your proposal while it’s under internal reviews. - Overhead costs (aka “institutional costs”, “indirect research costs” or "facilities and administrative costs”): Whenever allowed, UM requires overhead cost be included in the budget. Typical rate is 25% for NFRF grants, 15% for other non-Tri-Agency grants, and 30% for contracts/research agreements. Details can be found at: https://umanitoba.ca/research/office-research-services/funding-application-…. - Exception requests: Request for either deadline extension or overhead exception will need to be approved directly by VPRI under truly exceptional circumstances, and I can attest that such approval has been rare (if any!). I understand not everyone is happy with these practices, but they are "the law of the land” and I am afraid I don’t see any appetite from the Admin to make any changes anytime soon. All new faculty members are encouraged to enroll in this workshop series, and we also encourage you to circulate this more broadly within your faculty because any of the sessions offered can serve as a valuable refresher for those looking to revisit best practices in research management. The Series consists of 4 core and 4 optional sessions as shown below. You may register in only 1 session, as per your interest and needs. All sessions will be conducted virtually through Microsoft Teams. Each session will be offered twice a year to give participants the flexibility to choose the date that works best for them. If a participant attends four core sessions and one optional session over a two-year period, they will receive a completion letter that could be included in a tenure and promotion file as an example of professional growth in research management.
