802.1x and Vacation Time

Hello all, A couple of things I wanted to mention to everyone, I will taking reading week off for vacation time. I will have access to email and remote assistance but I won't be on campus during that time, so if you have anything that needs me to be on site, I will be back the following week to help you out. I also want to mention that IST has given me a list of computers in our faculty that has not yet been authenticated with the new 802.1x ethernet policy. Some computers I have identified, and some I haven't, so I am just sending this out to everyone. The reason being is for those who have not logged into the 802.1x before, are using a temporary IP address, and IST will be shutting these down on Feb 26th. How to check/fix: If you are using a Windows computer or laptop that connects through ethernet, and you log into that device with your AD credentials, this should automatically log you into the ethernet 802.1x without having to do any extra steps. You can check this by going to START-SETTINGS-NETWORK AND INTERNET-ETHERNET. If it shows Connected, signed in, then you are fine (see attached screenshot), if it shows a box that says SIGN IN, then you need to sign in with your UMNet ID and password (same as email) and the system will verify your credentials, and should give you the connected, signed in confirmation. If you have a Mac computer or laptop that connects to Ethernet, it should ask you at the beginning for your credentials to login, as if you were logging into wireless. Chose EAP-TLS if it asks for a certificate, then enter your credentials. Don't be concerned if it doesn't ask. If you have any issues with the above, I will be back on the 23rd, so plenty of time to iron out any wrinkles, and/or please contact me through email. Thanks, Jason Northage IT4 - Clayton H. Free Event | Arctic Resonance: Science, Film, Live Music + Q&A

Hi everyone, You’re warmly invited to Arctic Resonance, a free science communication event that brings together Arctic research, film, and live improvised music. Arctic Resonance is a collaboration between the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources and the Desautels Faculty of Music. The event features original visual material drawn from Arctic fieldwork and scientific research — including field videos from the Arctic, whale drone footage, eelgrass surveys, iceberg and sea ice model animations, and Arctic Ocean current visualizations — presented in a short film/documentary format. During the performance, students from the Desautels Faculty of Music’s eXperimental Improv Ensemble will create a live, improvised musical score in real time, responding to the visuals as they unfold. The goal is to explore new ways of communicating Arctic science in a more accessible, emotional, and engaging way through sound and image. Following the performance, there will be time for a Q&A and open discussion, where audience members are encouraged to ask questions about the research, the fieldwork, and the purpose behind the visual material and filming (e.g., drone footage, ecological surveys, and modeling outputs). 📍 Location: Desautels Concert Hall (150 Dafoe Road) 🕧 Time: January 23, 2026 at 12:30 PM 🎟️ Admission: Free and open to the community A poster with more details is attached. The main question we ask is: How can we leverage our collective institutional capacity to drive the change and innovation needed for climate-resilient and regenerative futures? To address that question, we seek participants to join a working group in one of three thematic areas: 1) Teaching and learning that creates action; 2) Community engagement that builds partnership; and 3) University governance that fosters institutional agility and innovation. Participants are expected to contribute to pre-work (e.g. review workshop materials, introductory team meeting) and a final report with recommendations for future action. In addition, rather than being simply a one-off event, we intend this gathering to be the start of an ongoing community of practice focused on climate action across sectors and domains. Participants will have the opportunity to remain engaged if they choose. I am pleased to announce the 2026-2027 funding streams for SoTL Seed Projects and SoTL Major Projects are now open for applications. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Seed Project: This program is available to all full-time tenure track/tenured faculty and probationary/continuing instructors and librarians. It offers seed funding for SoTL research projects that investigate factors that influence student learning and advance the scholarship of teaching and learning. We are offering funds up to a maximum of $6,000 per project and approximately ten (10) projects will be funded. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Major Project: This program is available to all full-time tenure track/tenured faculty and probationary/continuing instructors and librarians. It offers funds to support SoTL research initiatives that influence student learning which are interdisciplinary and span across faculties, colleges, or schools. Projects that have previously received teaching and learning seed funding will be prioritized. We are offering funds up to a maximum of $25,000 per project with matching/in-kind contributions from the unit(s). Up to three (3) projects will be funded. The internal proposal deadline for each of the funding streams is March 20, 2026. Deans need to have an internal deadline as each proposal requires the signature and support of the dean/director/university librarian prior to submission. Good morning, Please see the attached memorandum from Dr. Tracey Peter, Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs), regarding the invitation for applications and nominations for the 2025 Merit Awards for members of the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) bargaining unit. Unit heads are reminded to consider persons who may be away on leave and who might otherwise not be aware of their eligibility for this competition. Key Points: * Eligibility: Applicants/nominees must be UMFA members as of March 31, 2025. Only one award per person per year, and one per category in a three-year period. * Award Categories: * Teaching (up to 8 awards) * Research, Scholarly Work, and Other Creative Activities (up to 8 awards) * Service (up to 6 awards) * Any combination of the above (up to 8 awards) * Promoting Indigenous Achievement (up to 3 awards). * Application Process: * Submit applications via the MS Form link provided in the memo. * Required documents: Cover letter/letter of support, CV, and supporting documentation, all compiled into a single PDF (max 100mb). * No paper or email submissions will be accepted. * Deadline: All applications must be received by 4:00 p.m., Friday, March 6, 2026.
