She will discuss the barriers and opportunities she has experienced and her inspirations. Zilla Jones (she/her) is an African-Canadian writer living and working on Treaty 1 territory. She is a 2023 Journey Prize winner and was longlisted thrice for the CBC short story prize. Please see the attached event poster for more details.
The Power and Resistance in Latin America Research Cluster presents: Pachamama Politics : A Book Lecture by Dr. Teresa Velasquez (U of California San Bernardino) October 17th, 2:30-3:30 PM CT 409 Tier Building In this book talk, Pachamama Politics, Velásquez discusses her research among a group of Ecuadorian farmers organized to defend community watersheds from a proposed Canadian gold mine project. Her work exposes the rifts over government plans to pursue extraction in the name of Sumak Kawsay (to live well), and how farmers transformed their relationship to Indigeneity in unexpected ways.
