Dear Friends of UMIH, This Wednesday at 2:30 in Tier 409, we deepen UMIH’s semester-long engagement with material culture with an OBJECT LESSONS roundtable featuring four speakers. Join us for a scholarly show-and-tell featuring objects selected and analyzed by Dr. Brenda Austin-Smith (ETFM), Dr. Mike Sampson (Classics), Dr. Sean Carleton (History and Indigenous Studies), and Dr. Carla Manfredi (English at U of Winnipeg). Looking ahead, we are also pleased to announce that the Ecology, Canadian Poetry, and Labour Research Cluster (led by Dr. Jamie Paris) will welcome Professor Mark Nowak (Manhattanville University) to present a talk via Zoom on Wednesday Nov. 20th at 2:30pm. Please save the date. Professor Nowak is a 2010 Guggenheim Fellow and a 2015 Lannan Fellow. His book Social Poetics (2020) is central to understanding the idea of working-class poetry in North America. He is also an accomplished poet and social critic, and his book Coal Mountain Elementary (2009) has become essential reading for anyone interested in the white working class. More details to follow.
