Dear friends of the UMIH, I want to remind of today's event supported by the UMIH:
-Book Launch, Black Market Intimacies. The Transpacific Sexual Economy of the Korean War, with Dr. Jeongmin Kim, Department of History Wednesday, October 7 1-3pm Senior Common Room, 239 St. John's College
Black Market Intimacies (Stanford University Press, 2026) reveals how illicit exchanges of money and commodities involving sexual encounters between Korean and Japanese women and US soldiers provided the material foundations of the regional economy across Korea and Japan during the Korean War. Against the conventional view that illicit exchanges exist outside the formal economy and legal regulations, Jeongmin Kim examines how the interlinked markets for transactional sex and goods crucially constituted the transpacific formation of US military base capitalism in post-World War II East Asia This event is supported by the Centre for Human Rights Research, the Department of History, the Faculty of Arts, and the Institute for the Humanities
Also, and as we are going to enter the most active period of UMIH programming, mark your calendars for these next events:

War Came to My Home (Canada, 2026, 16 min.) Marusya Bociurkiw (dir.)
Thursday, October 22nd 2:30pm 409 Tier
War Came to My Home is set in an undisclosed location in Lviv, Ukraine, where approximately twenty women gather to weave camouflage nets for the Ukrainian army. What first appears to be a peaceful craft workshop gradually reveals itself as a space shaped by war, volunteering, solidarity, and everyday resistance. Structured to evoke the rhythm of a long afternoon, the film gradually reveals the women's individual reasons for being there and offers an intimate perspective on how the Russia-Ukraine war enters domestic, communal, and emotional life.
Marusya Bociurkiw is an award-winning Ukrainian Canadian filmmaker, writer, media scholar, and Professor Emeritus at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her scholarly and creative work brings together feminist and queer archives, media activism, migration, social justice, documentary filmmaking, cultural memory, and questions of belonging and displacement.
After the screening of the film, there will be a discussion with its director, Dr. Bocirkiw, moderated by Dr. Mariya Shymchyshyn (UMIH Research Affiliate)
This event, organized by the UMIH, counts on the generous support of the Departments of English, Theatre, Film, and Media, and German and Slavic Studies, and it is part of Central and East European Lecture Series.
