Dear friends of UMIH, With the semester now in full motion, in this newsletter I would like to bring to your attention some exciting events and opportunities-see attached posters for further information:
-Indigenous Peoples and the Lula Administration: The Role of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil Dr. Eloy Terena, Vice-Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil Wednesday October 1st, 2:30 pm, 108 St. John's College
A member of the Terena Indigenous people in Brazil, Dr. Terena is a lawyer and the Vice-Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil. He holds doctoral degrees in Law and Anthropology, and a post-doctoral degree in Social Science (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, France). He has worked as the general counsel for the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) as well as in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the International Criminal Court. Dr. Terena recently received Brazil's most prestigious award, the Order of Rio Branco, for his work in establishing the first Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil's history. There will be refreshments available after the presentation.
-Teaching and Generative AI: "Troubleshooting" Lauren Goodlad, editor of Critical AI and chair of the Critical AI @ Rutgers initiative, and Sharon Stoerger, Asst. This workshop will cover topics such as in-class assessment strategies for teaching critical AI literacies, precluding learning loss, and maintaining academic integrity, plus open discussion for troubleshooting and sharing ideas. This workshop is free and available through UMIH's affiliation to the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI). -UMIH Brown Bag Lunch Series: Ecstatic Torment: Cinematic Motus in the Horror Genre GG Dascal, UMIH Graduate Fellow Thursday, October 9th, 1pm, 309 Tier Bldg.
Bring your lunch, for a presentation by one of UMIH's Graduate Fellows! A PhD candidate at the Department of English, Theatre, Film, and Media, Dascal will discuss her research on horror films, aesthetics, and audience experience and engagement.

-The Great Overlooked - Prof. Leonid Biletskyi as Teacher and Scholar
This is a one-day symposium honoring Leonid Biletskyi (1882-1955), an influential Ukrainian literary scholar, educator, and cultural leader whose work in Winnipeg left a lasting legacy. This one-day, mixed-format symposium will be held on November 18th, and the keynote address will be delivered via Zoom at 2:30pm by Prof. Rostyslav Radyshevskyi (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv).
