[cid:image001.png@01DA4AEC.8C7CFE30]
This message is sent on behalf of Dr. B. Mario Pinto, Vice-President (Research and International)
Dear Colleagues,
Please see the attached announcement of our 2023 Samuel Weiner Distinguished Visitor Award recipients, Linda Hutcheon<https://www.english.utoronto.ca/people/directories/all-faculty/linda-hutche…> and Michael Hutcheon<https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Michael-Hutcheon>, from the University of Toronto. Please distribute widely in your areas.
More detail is provided below.
Lecture One:
February 7, 2024, 4:15, Robert B. Schultz Lecture Theatre, St. John’s College:
“Straddling Research Boundaries: Interdisciplinarity and Collaboration”
When a literary theorist and a physician collaborate to research and write about opera, many disciplinary boundaries must be negotiated. Considering both personal experience and the critical literature, the Hutcheons will investigate the process of interdisciplinary collaboration and explore its advantages as well as its challenges. Addressing the differences between the sciences and the humanities/social sciences in terms of disciplinary culture, the nature of evidence in research, as well as institutional demands and limitations, they will unpack the forces driving the current movement in academia towards working in interdisciplinary teams.
A reception will follow.
Lecture Two:
February 8, 2024, 4:15, ArtLab 136, Tache Hall Arts Complex:
“Aging and Creativity: Later Life, Last Works”
Some of the world’s greatest opera composers—including Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Strauss, and Olivier Messiaen—composed works late in life that reveal their unique responses to the aging process. Disputing the trend of generalized descriptions of aging artists’ “late style”, this talk will offer illustrated examples of later life works that display “late styles” that are as individual as the lives and personalities of the artists themselves. Drawing from their work on opera, the Hutcheons will discuss how age has provided artists the impetus for some of their best accomplishments.
Both Lectures are open to the public.
Sincerely,
B. Mario Pinto, Ph.D., FRSC
Vice-President (Research & International)

Hello FAFS,
Kenda and the PSGSA (Plant Science Graduate Students' Association) will be hosting an event on January 23rd in the Agriculture Atrium (poster attached). Attendees will enjoy free food and a presentation by Kenda's founder, Laetitia Mukungu, an MSc. student here in UM's Department of Plant Science.
All are welcome to attend! Please fill the one-minute google form to help us coordinate: https://forms.gle/hCpKkyy69gmun3aP6
Laetitia founded Kenda alongside members of her community in Kenya in response to the growing inaccessibility of traditional Kenyan vegetable crops since the COVID-19 pandemic. Kenda aims to build a community-operated seedbank, reintroducing the cultivation and celebration of African indigenous vegetables by supplying seeds to Kenyan farmers.

Dear FAFS community
Happy New Year! Before we fully leap into 2024, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the year that was 2023 in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences.
Over the course of the year, we celebrated student, staff and alumni achievements, welcomed new community members, and introduced new academic and research programs.
None of these accomplishments were achieved in isolation. A huge thanks goes out to our students, faculty, staff, valued friends, and partners for their collaborative efforts in shaping our curriculum, fostering unique student experiences, and preparing our graduates to contribute to their communities and to the world beyond. I continue to be impressed by our students, not only for their academic and research accomplishments, but also for their commitment to professional and personal growth.
As announced last July<https://news.umanitoba.ca/leadership-announcement-july-2023/>, the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) has extended my appointment as Dean for two additional years, from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025. I appreciate the letters sent to the Provost to endorse the reappointment and am truly grateful for the support of the Provost and the Faculty. I am excited to continue to work with our students and the Faculty's partners (within and outside the university) to advance education, training and research in agriculture, food and nutrition.
Here are my Top Ten highlights, selected from among many in 2023:
1. Convocation<https://news.umanitoba.ca/celebrating-agricultural-and-food-sciences-grads-…> is always a time to celebrate student success. In turn, our students recognize that success depends on the dedication of their teachers<https://news.umanitoba.ca/students-thank-teachers-for-their-inspiration-at-…>.
2. The diligent efforts of both staff and students culminated in the launch of a new academic program, the Masters in Applied Human Nutrition<https://news.umanitoba.ca/master-of-applied-human-nutrition-program-takes-i…>, with the first cohort of students starting in Fall 2023.
3. Thanks to strong donor support, we kicked off the RBC Scholars in Sustainable Agriculture<https://news.umanitoba.ca/rbcs-commitment-to-a-sustainable-future-inspires-…> which will provide enriched research experiences for up to 45 undergraduate and graduate students.
4. Four new academics<https://news.umanitoba.ca/new-academics-bring-diverse-expertise-to-faculty-…> from a variety of backgrounds joined us as the Faculty continues to revitalize our academic core.
5. With the support of external partners, the Faculty announced a new Manitoba Strategic Research Chair in Sustainable Protein<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-nutritional-scientist-appointed-manitoba-strat…> and the inaugural Jarislowsky Chair in Natural Systems Agriculture for Climate Solutions<https://news.umanitoba.ca/dr-martin-entz-looks-to-change-the-future-of-farm…>.
6. 2023 marked a big year for infrastructure renewal in the Faculty, from the new Manitoba Egg Farmers Learning and Research Facility<https://news.umanitoba.ca/doors-now-open-at-the-manitoba-egg-farmers-learni…> to the Carman Field Equipment Facility<https://news.umanitoba.ca/doors-open-on-new-facility-at-carman-research-far…>. Additionally, the Prairie Crops and Soils Research Facility<https://news.umanitoba.ca/ums-new-prairie-crops-and-soils-research-facility…> fundraising campaign reached its target.
7. The Faculty continues to be proud of the accomplishments of our alumni/ae. In 2023, two FAFS alumni were recognized<https://news.umanitoba.ca/alumni-presented-with-certificates-of-merit-for-l…> for their community contributions.
8. Our researchers also received national and international recognition<https://news.umanitoba.ca/faculty-researchers-recognized-for-achievements-i…> for their accomplishments.
9. The highly popular Discover the Farm<https://news.umanitoba.ca/second-annual-discover-the-farm-celebrates-manito…> event once again drew hundreds of visitors to Glenlea Research Station and the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre.
10. Finally, I encourage you to check out some highlights of research and innovation in our Faculty in our new podcast series called ChangeMAKErs<https://umanitoba.ca/agricultural-food-sciences/make/make-podcasts>.
As we enter a new year, I want us to use the momentum of these and other activities to drive excellence in what the Faculty does. The hard work, passion, and dedication demonstrated by each member of our community are instrumental in defining the Faculty's success. Together we are capable of great things and I look forward to our shared successes in 2024.
