Hello new and returning students in the College of Nursing!
This email contains information regarding the Fall/Winter General Bursary program offered through the campus Financial Aid and Awards office.
Every year, the University of Manitoba offers a wide range of bursaries to both new and continuing full-time and part-time students who have a demonstrated financial need and a minimum academic standing. The average value of bursaries range in amounts from $400 to $1,000, with over $14 million awarded annually.
There are donors who have specifically donated funds to Bachelor of Nursing students. You can read about them here.<https://umanitoba.ca/nursing/student-experience/resources-undergraduate-stu…>
* The application is now open in the AURORA<https://aurora.umanitoba.ca/> Student Portal. The deadline to apply is October 1, 2023, at 2359h.
It is important to know only students who are registered in Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 terms with a minimum of 9 credit hours (in each term) are considered for bursaries. If you have been given course registration info for Winter 2024 and not yet registered, please take action and register.
If you are allocated bursary funding, the amounts will be applied to Winter 2024 tuition in AURORA. This typically happens in mid-November.
Questions about the bursary application and/or eligibility should be directed to the Financial Aid & Awards office - 422 University Centre<https://umanitoba.ca/financial-aid-and-awards>
Last note - if you submit your bursary application and then go back and revisit it, you must resubmit it.
Best wishes,
Marie

It was a pleasure to welcome you (back) to the midwifery program! I hope the information shared was useful. Please reach out if you have questions.
One thing I was remiss not to mention during my presentation was about shared student space in Helen Glass.
Along with nursing students, midwifery students have access to:
* 206 - Student association lounge
* 230 - Quiet study space (in hallway by parkade)
* Locker room in basement (1st floor)
* Indigenous students can request access to the PINE (Pathway for Indigenous Nursing Education) Please email Marla.Robson(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Marla.Robson@umanitoba.ca> to connect.
The lounge and locker room in basement have community use items like refrigerator, microwave, sink, etc.
*If you have never had your ID card coded before to access the spaces noted above, a walk to the Physical Plant building is required - see map below. It's short walk on a beautiful day.
** if your card was coded in a previous academic session and the swipe no longer works, please stop by the reception desk and they can assist you by email.
The hours the coding office is available - Monday through Friday:
* 0830 - 0930
* 1015 - 1145
* 1300 - 1430
* 1500 - 1530
Also, for the students who raised their hands acknowledging issues with Manitoba Student Loans, please email me directly so I can investigate further.
Happy Wednesday!
Marie

Subject: [Nursing-bn-students] SAVE THE DATE: Orange Shirt day
Hello Students,
The Nursing Students' Association (NSA) along with the Orange Shirt Day Planning Committee (the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous), the College of Nursing, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the Centre for Human Rights Research, the University of Manitoba's Student Union, PINE (Pathway to Indigenous Nursing Education), and the Indigenous Students' Association) has been working hard to plan our annual Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters event. We will be honouring this day with a full day of events starting in the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Friday, September 29th from 8:30AM-3:00PM. Everyone is invited!
Orange Shirt Day holds deep significance as a symbol of remembrance, reconciliation, and respect for Indigenous communities in Canada. It commemorates the painful legacy of residential schools, where Indigenous children endured cultural erasure and abuse, and serves as a solemn reminder of the need to acknowledge this dark chapter in Canadian history. By wearing orange shirts, participating in educational activities, and engaging in discussions, OSD encourages individuals and communities to actively support reconciliation efforts and foster understanding. It is a powerful symbol of unity and commitment to healing the wounds of the past while striving for a more just and compassionate society. Considering that this topic may be triggering for some, we have compiled a list of mental health resources including some crisis lines (attached) should you feel the need to seek help.
On September 29th, starting at 8:30AM the NSA will be providing free Orange Shirts at the IG Athletic Centre as you enter to take part in a Teach in for reconciliation hosted by Dr. Sean Carleton, Prof. Brenda Gunn, Dr. Cary Miller, and Marc Kruse. We welcome you to wear an orange T-shirt and join us at the IG Athletic Centre, then HGC to hear some wise words from our Elders and speakers. We will start our walk to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) for an offering of Tobacco to fire. Once our pledge is made at NCTR, we will return to HGC, to observe a cultural performance piece and a feast will be provided to our participants. A more comprehensive agenda for the day will follow.
If you have any questions about the proceedings, we would be happy to provide further information regarding Orange Shirt Day. Please email Ari at alkhafaa(a)myumanitoba.ca<mailto:alkhafaa@myumanitoba.ca> if you have any questions or concerns.
We hope to see you there.
