I think Jim's point is a good one. So, yes. the Friday afternoon plenary does seem like our best option under the circumstances. I agree that Jeff would be an excellent choice to chair this session, if he is willing. Sharon

I actually have a different thought as I watch registrations come in. We have now at least one union registering as a group (they’ve now asked us to register 40 of them as a block), and as I’m writing the blurb about the conference for the MFL newsletter that goes to hundreds of locals, as well as receiving at least a few emails from out of town of people i didn’t know were coming, I’m beginning to wonder about our total numbers. The Panitch session, whatever we think of it, will also bring people to the conference. We might have a lot of registrations! Frankly, I don’t really know. But I’m beginning to think that we’re better off with a few more concurrent sessions rather than ones that are too large, or where people can't get seats.
This is not a bad problem to have, but I’m a bit relieved at the thought of dividing a large group into four, rather than into three, for most of the time slots.
I have no idea whether is is a real issue, since it's very early in the registration process.

FYI, everyone:
There has been some debate among the committee and our chair about whether to schedule the new panel, organized by Leo Panitch, in its one slot on the program.
On the one hand, there’s a case that a panel of well-known and long-standing academics might attract so many of the participants that it would compete unfairly with adjacent panels.
On the other, there’s a case that scheduling the panel as a stand-alone event privileges this one panel unfairly. It assumes that they will be of greater interest than other panels and deserve a special place on the program, an assumption that may not be correct.
I, for one, would be interested in knowing what everyone else thinks about this decision.

They are willing to reduce the size of their panel as we wish and, I think more importantly, recognize the time constraints generally since the issue is not simply the number and length of the opening remarks, but of ending it on time.
