One century after it was violently crushed by police, in collusion with state officials and Winnipeg's business elite, the Winnipeg General Strike remains one of the most significant events in Canadian history. *1919: A Graphic History of the Winnipeg General Strike* introduces new generations to the strike's many lessons, including the power of class struggle and solidarity and the brutal tactics that governments and bosses use to crush workers’ movements.
*1919* was co-created by the *Graphic History Collective*, a group of activists, artists, writers, and researchers passionate about comics, history and social change all across Canada whose recent publication *Drawn to Change: Graphic Histories of Working-Class Struggle* won the 2017 Wilson Book Prize, with *David Lester*, an artist, writer, illustrator, author of the acclaimed graphic novel *The Listener*, guitarist for Mecca Normal, as well as the creator of many other politically-engaged art projects.
"A concise, powerful, and beautifully illustrated account of the Winnipeg General Strike that confirms its contemporary relevance for workers demanding their rights and dignity today." – Hassan Yussuff, President of the Canadian Labour Congress
