Dear all: I was talking to Molly McCracken from CCPA and apparently they would very much appreciate it if we would sponsor their event with Boots Riley on May 11. You all probably recall that we decided we couldn't partner with the CCPA on the event because the only date he could come is May 11 - one day too late for us. But Molly tells me that they would benefit significantly from our sponsorship, which would involve us formally becoming a sponsor and supporting them in-kind (they would also accept monetary support, but I am guessing we can afford only in-kind). They are about to launch the event, so if we are able to sponsor, it would help if we could tell them soon. Is there support for this among the committee? Best, julie

Well, I think I’ve been clear on what I think, which is to say, once more, “YES.” Now that we’ve lost Bragg, attaching our name and support to Boots makes more sense than ever.

For those of us who missed the last meeting, this is the first we’ve heard that Bragg is off the table. Has a decision been made about what to do that evening?
Are we now in a financial position to support the Riley event (e.g. can we use money from the MFL originally earmarked for Bragg, as I understand it)? If so, I’m in favour.

Without more clarity with the Bragg event I am highly skeptical of it coming together at this point to be honest considering we are half way through February and the conference is starting in 2 months.
With Boots I think we could be a sponsor, although I'm not sure exactly what "in-kind" support means in this case. Would it mean the committee buying tickets, us promoting the event and selling tickets at the conference? I recall that is what we discussed before and don't see a problem. I think it would be a positive thing to be involved in.

Thanks for the discussion. I am still a bit confused, however. I don't recall a discussion about whether we would sponsor Boots Riley, although we did agree to support the event. It's clear that we can't share the event with CCPA due to him being available only after the conference concludes. I am not committed to us sponsoring the CCPA's event, but I threw the suggestion out to assess whether we'd be willing. So, to be clear, all I was asking was whether we'd be willing to sponsor the event to support the CCPA. Of course they'd love to have some cash from us, but they would be happy for our sponsorship to involve in-kind support, which I think we already agreed we would do. The question is, will we sponsor it? julie

Best, julie

I’m a bit confused too. I think I did know what was meant by “in-kind support.” I’m not opposed to sponsoring the event, I suppose, if it’s just lending our name, although we are not really an ongoing organization (which can go around sponsoring things). I don’t see any downside, though. Is this particularly pressing, or can we discuss it at our March 2 meeting?

The question is, will we sponsor it? julie

For those of us who missed the last meeting, this is the first we've heard that Bragg is off the table. Has a decision been made about what to do that evening?
Are we now in a financial position to support the Riley event (e.g. can we use money from the MFL originally earmarked for Bragg, as I understand it)? If so, I'm in favour.

Well, I think I've been clear on what I think, which is to say, once more, "YES." Now that we've lost Bragg, attaching our name and support to Boots makes more sense than ever.
