Today, Premier Wab Kinew announced a $3 million investment to revitalize The Forks Historic Rail Bridge. This is the first step toward reopening this active transportation corridor and connection to Niizhoziibean, which features stunning public art and the first wiigwaam within city limits in more than a century.
This commitment is especially meaningful now, as we look to open the Nestaweya River Trail – which runs under the bridge - in the days ahead. (The on-land trails opened last week, and the river trail won't be far behind.)
The Forks Historic Rail Bridge has been closed since 2023 for safety reasons, and we look forward to reopening it as soon as possible.
More than 250,000 people used this bridge as a part of their active transportation route each year. This investment will help restore access to a well-loved part of downtown that many Manitobans use and care about.
