[At-network] Major reform could be on the way for national street design committee

*Nutshell*: As noted in a recent APBP (Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals) webinar, many cities are moving ahead with infrastructure designs, mostly imported from Europe, that haven't yet been approved in the MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices). Updates to this document takes many years (think decades).

But it appears there may be hope! First, the possibility of the progressive NACTO (National Association of City Transportation Officials) becoming a member of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Second, the Institute for Transportation Engineers' new president has vowed to ensure its members on that committee vote in a way that reflects ITE's goal to make streets bike- and ped-friendly. Finally, there appears to be consideration of more frequent updates to the MUTCD or splitting the document to allow more frequent updates to some sections. Any changes in the US version will undoubtedly have a ripple effect on the MUTCD for Canada.
