Important Security Update – Critical PHP Vulnerability
by Janela Ledda 21 Oct '26

21 Oct '26

The following message is shared on behalf of Harkiran Kaur, IT Director, Rady faculty of Health Sciences Hi everyone, I wanted to make you aware of a critical security vulnerability affecting PHP, a technology used by a number of web-based applications and services. As per Information security guidelines (IST)Our IT team is actively assessing the impact and working through the required patching and remediation as a priority. As a precaution while this work is underway, if your unit manages or is aware of any PHP-based website or application that is currently publicly accessible, please connect with Rady IT. Public-facing affected services should either be temporarily taken offline or have access restricted to internal users only until they have been reviewed and the appropriate security updates have been applied. Our team has already identified several services that require attention and is coordinating the work through staging and production. We will work with the affected areas to minimize disruption while ensuring we address the security risk appropriately. Please share this with the appropriate people in your unit, particularly anyone responsible for locally managed websites or web applications. If you are unsure whether a service may be affected, please reach out to Rady IT and we can help review it. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work through this security issue. Thanks & regards Harkiran Kaur IT Director Rady Faculty of Health Sciences E-Mail: Kiran.Kaur(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Kiran.Kaur@umanitoba.ca> [cid:image001.jpg@01DD6149.C86EE2C0] ]

Free seminar at CHI on Oct. 29: LLMs and Natural Language Processing
by Janela Ledda 19 Oct '26

19 Oct '26

Hello, Many of us use AI assistants like ChatCPT or Claude, but we may still struggle to understand how they work or why they get things wrong. A free seminar at CHI on Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. aims to close that knowledge gap, and I thought it might interest your grad students or other members in the College of Community and Global Health. Foundations and Mechanisms of Modern Natural Language Processing and Large Language Models Presented by Dr. Lei Ding October 29, 2026 | 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Chown Building, A474 The Classroom No registration required Dr. Ding will explain how large language models generate text, from next-token prediction to instruction-following assistants. He will cover how the Transformer architecture uses context, and how pretraining and post-training shape a model's behaviour. He will then connect those ideas to everyday use: how prompts and retrieval-augmented generation affect a model's answers, and where errors can creep in. The seminar is an accessible introduction. It is open to faculty, staff, trainees, students, and anyone interested in bioinformatics, biostatistics, or epidemiology. It's free, and no registration is required. We would be grateful if you would share this with your department's students and members. Attached is a pdf poster appropriate for email or print. Event Poster Placements
by CCGH Dean 06 Oct '26

06 Oct '26

The following message is shared on behalf of Jisselle Buan, Operations Manager, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Hello, It has been brought to our attention that event posters are being taped in areas such as elevators, glass walls, and other surfaces that are currently wrapped with UM branding. We kindly request that posters be placed on designated bulletin boards rather than on elevators, glass walls, or other UM-branded surfaces. Poster stands can also be made available for use in open areas, if required. Please note that adhesive and tape can be difficult to remove from these surfaces and may leave residue or potentially damage the UM branding decals during removal. To help prevent damage, please ensure that only appropriate, non-damaging tape or an approved adhesive is used when posting signs. These guidelines will help keep event posters clearly visible while maintaining the condition and appearance of our shared spaces and UM-branded surfaces. Kindly share this information to your respective units and student groups. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
