Lavender Graduation 2026 - An Invitation to Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry 2SLGBTQIA+ Grads

Hello, Lavender Graduation<https://lavendergraduationlegacyproject.org/about-us/> is an annual ceremony conducted on numerous campuses to honor queer and trans students to acknowledge their achievements and contributions as they graduate their degrees. The Lavender Graduation Ceremony was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a lesbian who was denied the opportunity to attend the graduations of her children because of her sexual orientation. In response, she organized the first Lavender Graduation ceremony at the University of Michigan in 1995. Since 1995, Lavender Graduation ceremonies have happened across North America, most predominantly in the United States. In 2018, McGill University made history when it became the first post-secondary institution outside of the United States to host a Lavender Graduation. Since 2024, the Queer & Trans Graduate Student Group has hosted a Lavender Graduation ceremony at the University of Manitoba. At this ceremony, grads from all post-secondary institutions in Manitoba who are 2SLGBTQIA+ are welcome to attend and be celebrated for their accomplishments. Students who have graduated in the Fall 2025/Spring 2026 or will be graduating in Summer 2026/Fall 2026 are welcome to be a graduate this ceremony. This ceremony is symbolic in nature and no parchments are conferred. I would greatly appreciate if you could share this information with students in your college. Professor Forgay was a visionary leader whose dedication, passion, and commitment laid the foundation for dental hygiene education at our institution. Through her leadership, she helped shape a program grounded in excellence, professionalism, and a deep commitment to community oral health. Her influence has had a lasting impact on generations of students, faculty, and the broader oral health community. As founding Director, Professor Forgay was instrumental in establishing the values and standards that continue to guide our School today. Last Week of Clinics

Good morning, The final week of clinics is officially here! A few important things to keep in mind this week: 1. All patient care must be completed by Friday, April 10th at 4:00pm. If you have any concerns about completing your patients by Friday, please email your Team Leader and me as soon as possible. 2. Please check your chairs on AxiUm for each clinical session this week to ensure all of your chairs are present. * If you are missing a chair for a session, please let me know. * If you no longer need your clinic chair for an additional clinic session, please let me know. * Please be sure to book your patient in AxiUm for each clinic session. 1. Your final Clinic Progress Report is due this Friday, April 10th by 11:59pm. 2. All instructor swipes for unapproved treatment/forms and Correction Cards must be obtained by Friday, April 10th at 4:00pm. If you have an open clinic this week, please use this time to work on Clearance activities and obtain any outstanding instructor swipes/approvals. 3. In this final week of clinics, students will not be required to attend clinic sessions if they have an open clinic. * This will allow students to focus their time and energy on outstanding clinical and academic activities, and will allow the clinical instructors to focus their time on active patient care, outstanding LA requirements, and Clearance Approvals. * Students should only be staying home to study if ALL clearance instructor approvals have been completed. * Please note that this will still be counted as an Open Clinic. * Kindly email both your Team Leader and me to let us know your plans so we can organize the week accordingly. * If you have not had many opportunities to take radiographs, please remember that attending radiology remains a valuable option. SDH Final Exam Policies - Winter 2026

** Sent on behalf of Mary Bertone, Director, School of Dental Hygiene ** Hello DH2 & DH3, While you are busy with exams or preparing for the upcoming, please review the following SDH policies on Final grades, examinations, and supplemental examinations. Final Exam Policy: * No student is permitted to leave the exam room during the first 30 minutes of an exam. * No student who arrives late to an exam is permitted to write longer than the scheduled end-time for that exam. * No student who arrives more than 30 minutes after the start of the exam is permitted to write the exam. * After 30 minutes has passed, washroom breaks are permitted. Only one student is allowed to leave the exam room at a time and should be escorted to the door of the washroom by an invigilator if possible. Keep a record of the students who leave temporarily for washroom breaks and note the time they leave and return. A spare Attendance Sheet can be used for this purpose. Ensure their exam is left closed on the desk until the student returns. Students must not take cell phones, electronic aids or other materials into the washroom with them. * No student may be permitted to re-enter the exam room, unless escorted by an invigilator as identified above, until all exam scripts have been collected Students shall not bring extra personal belongings into the room, but when they do, they must be stored off to the side. SDH Final Examination and Grade Results Policy: Final Exam Results: Final exam results will not be posted. Final Grade Notification: Final grades will be posted in Aurora after all grading activities are completed. Please allow 3 weeks for the final grades to be processed. Incomplete Grades: An "Incomplete" grade may be assigned if a student cannot complete course requirements due to extenuating circumstances as approved by the School of Dental Hygiene director. Supplemental Examinations A supplemental examination is an examination that may be offered as a privilege to a dental hygiene student who has failed a dental hygiene (HYGN) course or failed to achieve a satisfactory result. Such examinations are offered in order to grant the student an opportunity to rectify the inadequacy without repeating the course. Supplemental examination privileges are permitted in the School of Dental Hygiene for all HYGN courses with the exception of those in which remediation/re-examination is not realistically feasible. Such privileges must be approved by Dentistry College Council. Students seeking supplemental privileges should contact the Director indicating her/his request. Applications to write a supplemental examination must be accompanied by the paid fee before the supplemental examination can be written. The student will be notified in a letter from the Director's Office if she/he is granted the privilege and under what specific conditions. A student in DH 2 and DH 3 who has failed in not more than two HYGN courses at the end of the regular term, may, at the discretion of the Director and with approval from Dentistry College Council, be awarded the privilege of one or two supplemental examination(s). A student must maintain a minimum sessional (combined Fall and Winter terms) GPA of 2.0 in that year in order to be eligible for supplemental privileges. The passing grade in supplemental examinations is "C" for each course. A student who is granted supplemental privileges is obliged to sit the examination at the earliest opportunity. The student must contact the course coordinator within 7 days of the date the notification letter from the Director's Office to schedule a plan for remediation and a date to write their supplemental examination. Supplemental examinations must be held prior to the opening of the Fall academic session. A student who has not successfully exercised supplemental privileges will be considered to have failed the year and may be required to repeat the entire year or a modified program as required by Dentistry College Council. If/when the condition is removed in that session, the student will be regarded as having completed the year to which the condition applied. Dear Dentistry & Dental Hygiene Class of 2026: The Manitoba Dental Association and Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry/School of Dental Hygiene will be honoring you at a breakfast to celebrate your graduation on Monday, June 1, 2026: RBC Convention Centre, 375 York Avenue, Southside main floor Breakfast/speeches start at 9:00 a.m. (doors open at 8:30) You will each be delegated four seats which are for you plus three guests to attend. If you don't plan on using all four of your seats, please let me know. I will have a 'Wait List' for those wanting extra seats. If you would like to be placed on a 'Wait List', please email me to inform me as it will be 'first come-first served'.
