Know Your Familiars: The Starter Tier List
Witchspire isn't just about exploring biomes and hoarding Spirit Shards — it's the familiars that define how you play. From the balanced safety of Quol to the aggressive damage output of Fien, every starter pick changes your early game completely.
In this breakdown, we cover every starter familiar, their roles, and the most common question new players ask: Which familiar should I actually pick first?
1. Quol (Ethereal) The community's safest beginner pick. Quol offers balanced stats with no hard counters, making it ideal for solo players who want a smooth learning curve without getting punished for not knowing the meta.
Role: All-rounder / Solo carry Personality: Calm, reliable, steady Key Trait: No major weaknesses. Quol won't carry you to the top of the damage charts, but it also won't let you down when you're still learning which biomes to avoid.
2. Fien (Fire) The damage dealer. Fien hits harder than any other starter, but comes with lower survivability. Best for players who already know the basic crafting loop and want to push into harder biomes faster.
Role: DPS / Glass cannon Personality: Aggressive, impatient, fiery Key Trait: High burst damage. If you can keep Fien alive through the first few boss encounters, the payoff is massive.
3. Locto (Nature) The co-op support. Locto's abilities shine in multiplayer, offering healing and utility that solo players won't fully appreciate. If you're planning to play with friends, Locto is the pick.
Role: Support / Team buffer Personality: Gentle, protective, nurturing Key Trait: Passive healing and resource bonuses that scale with team size. In solo play, Locto is average. In co-op, it's invaluable.
4. Bril (Earth) The tank. Bril absorbs damage that would flatten other familiars, giving you room to make mistakes. Perfect for players who prefer a slower, more defensive approach to exploration.
Role: Tank / Damage sponge Personality: Stubborn, loyal, unshakable Key Trait: Highest base HP and defense among all starters. Bril won't win any speed records, but it will keep you alive long enough to learn the game.
