Good afternoon,
Please see the attached message sent on behalf of Dr. Docking.

Dear Colleagues,
For Interventional Radiology patients who are at high risk of requiring a blood transfusion:
For patients in IR who are higher risk of requiring a blood transfusion, we are now able to order red blood cells and keep them in coolers in IR. These are the same coolers we get in an MHP, except these units are ordered and kept in the room "just in case," in the same manner as we would keep blood in the fridge. (We will not be getting a blood fridge for IR.)
As a reminder, once the cooler is opened, blood inside must be given within 4 hours, or else it needs to be returned to the blood bank within 60 minutes if you aren't going to use it. If the cooler is not opened, please send it back within 8 hours to avoid it being wasted.
** As per previous - Massive Hemorrhage Protocol can be still be called in IR, which is separate from this process.
Leigh (who is the CRN) will be giving education to the nurses in the near future, but this practice can start at any time if you feel your patient needs blood readily available.
Let me know if you have questions.
Leanne
