Some workshops that may interest you include: Critical Dialogues: Wednesday, May 21, 1:00 to 4:00pm: Communicating with clarity and using our verbal skills to share, exchange and invite dialogue with others are critical workplace skills for many roles in our community. If you work as part of a team, support others' work, explain or share information, this workshop may be helpful for you to learn more about how to have successful conversations. Presentation Skills: Wednesday, June 4, 1:00 to 4:00pm: Knowing how to prepare, to use our voice, and how to organize our materials can help us to engage our audience and share our message. This workshop will provide you with tools to help you to prepare your presentations, use your V.O.I.C.E. and review the use of the most common visual aids. Taking Minutes for Meetings: ONLINE, Wednesday, June 11, 9:00 am to noon: Minutes of meetings form an important record of the decisions made by our community. Meeting minutes often include a summary of work that has been completed and also the action items that relate to the commitment of a committee or group's intentions to take certain steps. With the importance placed on documenting these items, it is vital that minutes are clear, concise and accurate. Project Management, Thursday, June 26, 9:00 am to 4:00pm: Learn how to plan your next project using a simple and structured step-by-step process. This workshop introduces you to general project management processes, techniques, and vocabulary. Participants will leave with an understanding of the project management process from start to finish and able to contribute to the implementation of large projects and to lead small projects effectively. New Support Staff Orientation, Thursday, May 22 OR Thursday June 19, 9:00 am to 4:00pm. If you are a new support staff employee, or have hired a new support staff employee, there will be two Orientation sessions held this spring. Additional offerings will be held, in person and online, in the fall. Hello I am pleased to tell you that Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened our training and development workshops to the end of May, 2025. Going forward, we will continue to open the calendar several weeks in advance and I encourage you to check the LODReg page regularly to view all of the employee learning and development opportunities as they become available. LOD workshops and sessions are fully funded by Human Resources and are offered exclusively to UManitoba employees. Some workshops that may interest you include: Hiring in Good Ways: Tuesday, May 20, 1:00 to 4:00pm: Those involved in hiring will benefit from increasing their awareness and understanding of Indigenous history and culture. During this session, participants will examine the historical relationships between Indigenous peoples and post-secondary institutions, and explore the impact of historical relationships on Indigenous applicants. (This workshop will also be offered on June 5. Registration for June workshops will open in a few weeks). Inclusive Hiring Practices: Wednesday, April 16, 9:00 am to noon OR Wednesday, May 21, 9:00 am to noon: Those involved in recruitment, selection, hiring and onboarding functions for non-academic employees hold special responsibilities when conducting these activities. This workshop provides a foundation of knowledge that will support our institutional efforts to have consistent and widespread integration of inclusive hiring practices. Annual Review & Development Plan: Tuesday, May 27, 9:00 am to noon: Performance development is a continuous process to assist staff in performing to the best of their abilities, enabling them to continuously develop and integrate individual performance goals and strategies with the unit and university's strategic plans. Those with supervisory responsibilities are encouraged to attend this training to learn how to use the available tools to assist in their planning and preparation of annual performance reviews. Project Management, Thursday, May 29, 9:00 am to 4:00pm: Learn how to plan your next project using a simple and structured step-by-step process. This workshop introduces you to general project management processes, techniques, and vocabulary. Participants will leave with an understanding of the project management process from start to finish and able to contribute to the implementation of large projects and to lead small projects effectively. The "Pathing Your UMCareer" series is moving online this spring to increase accessibility to these short sessions, which are designed to support you in your career planning at UManitoba. The session on 'Resumes' will be held April 14, 'Transferable Skills' is on May 12, and 'Interviews' will be held May 26. Taking Minutes for Meetings: Monday, April 7, 1:00 to 4:00 pm: Minutes of meetings form an important record of the decisions made by our community. During the workshop, participants will explore the steps involved in pre-planning minutes for the meeting; keeping track of items during the meeting; transcribing notes into minutes following the meeting; distributing minutes; and filing as needed. Participants will engage in learning activities and exercises and receive templates and examples for future use. Critical Dialogues: Monday, March 24, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. If you work as part of a team, support others' work, explain or share information, this communication skills workshop may be helpful for you to learn more about how to have successful conversations. This workshop covers topics relating to clarity, nonverbal communication, listening, empathy, respect, feedback and more. Pathing Your UMCareer- Transferable Skills, Monday, March 3, 1:00 to 2:30 pm Pathing Your UMCareer- Interviews, Wednesday, March 12, 1:00 to 2:30 pm, and Pathing Your UMCareer- Resumes: Monday, April 14, 1:00 to 2:30 pm These short sessions are designed to support employees in career planning. For many current employees, understanding how our experience in one role transfer to another; preparing for a formal interview; and updating our resume are areas of our career plan that might need refreshing. These sessions hep you to showcase yourself as an applicant for a role within the University. Participants will have the opportunity to self-assess current knowledge, skills and abilities; practice standard interview questions; and explore ways to tailor a resume to a job posting to prepare you to apply for future opportunities. Some workshops that may interest you include: Pathing Your UMCareer- Resumes: Monday, February 3, 10:30am to noon. The newest edition to our series designed to support employees in career planning, this session covers how to craft your resume in a way that showcases you as an applicant for a role within the University. Participants will have the opportunity to practice tailoring a resume to a job posting and receive strategies to prepare you to apply for future opportunities. Critical Dialogues: Monday, February 3, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. If you work as part of a team, support others' work, explain or share information, this communication skills workshop may be helpful for you to learn more about how to have successful conversations. This workshop covers topics relating to clarity, nonverbal communication, listening, empathy, respect, feedback and more. Making Meetings More Effective: Monday, February 10, 1:00 to 4:00pm. In this workshop, participants will examine the most common types of meetings including information sharing; decision making; and process & planning. Using the CANOE model, participants will be able to plan and facilitate a structured and productive meeting. Social Intelligence: Building Impactful Relationships: Monday, February 24, 1:00 to 4:00pm. By identifying the social intelligence characteristics within ourselves, and recognizing these characteristics in others, participants will develop approaches to working with others more effectively. Microsoft 365 sessions: I.S.T. Engagement Services provides several Microsoft 365 sessions covering topics related to Microsoft 365, Teams, Sharing Files, MS Forms and more. To register, please visit LODReg here: https://umanitoba.gosignmeup.com/Public/Course/Browse Our February workshops and sessions will open for registration in early January, and then we will continue to open the calendar six to eight weeks in advance throughout the winter and spring terms. Some workshops that may interest you include: Training: Design & Development: Monday, January 13, 1:00 to 4:00pm. If you are ever called upon to train others, this half-day workshop will give you a solid foundation in the training design models we use in LOD to support people to learn new skills in a collaborative and engaging environment. Managing the Respectful Workplace: Thursday, January 16, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm (online via Webex). We all hold a responsibility to avoid behaviours that, even unintentionally, may reasonably offend, intimidate, embarrass or humiliate others. This workshop explores ways that all of us, and especially those with people management responsibilities, can support a respectful workplace. Influencing Change: Monday, January 20, 1:00 to 4:00pm. Using influence to initiate and support change means having an impact on achieving results and being able to recognize the key moments, or conversations, where you can make a difference. Change Models and Methods: Monday, January 27, 1:00 to 4:00pm. There are several models and methods to approach, implement, coordinate and support change. In this workshop, participants will review the characteristics of several common change models and explore the strengths and challenges of each. Introduction to Human Resources: Tuesday, January 21 from 9:00am to 4:00pm (online via Webex). This workshop explores the human resources aspects of the employee life cycle. While this is the first workshop in the UM Human Resources Essentials Program, it can be taken as a stand-alone workshop for those who want to learn more about human resource management at the university. Introduction to Management: Wednesday, January 22, from 9:00 am to 4:00pm. Learn the fundamentals about setting strategy, creating values, and developing management styles, along with practicing basic coaching skills. While this is the first workshop in the UM Management Fundamentals Program, it can be taken on its own by anyone who wants to learn about managing and supervising others at the university. Please register at: https://umanitoba.gosignmeup.com/Public/Course/Browse Some workshops that may interest you include: Ethics: Organizational Stewardship - Wednesday, November 20, OR Tuesday, December 10, from 9am to 1pm. This four-hour workshop engages participants in conversation and activities to explore our ethical obligations and opportunities. Critical Dialogues - Monday, November 25, from 1:00 to 4:00pm. This session provides great models and practices for ways to communicate and collaborate with others. Project Management - Wednesday, December 4, from 9am to 4pm. This interactive workshop offers a great foundation in how to manage a project from start to finish. Pathing Your UMCareer: Transferable Skills - Monday, December 2, from 2:00 to 3:30pm. We might be limiting ourself from future opportunities by not recognizing how skills in one area can be transferred to other roles. This short session encourages support staff to explore their knowledge, skills, and talents and describe them in ways that relate to other UManitoba opportunities they may want to pursue. New Support Staff Orientation - Thursday, November 21, from 9am to 4pm. If you are, or have hired, new support staff who have not yet attended an Orientation session, this is the opportunity. We anticipate several new workshops will be scheduled for winter and spring. LOD programs and services are fully funded by Human Resources as part of our commitment to employee development, and are available exclusively to University of Manitoba employees.
