Hello I am pleased to highlight some of the upcoming LOD offerings which support supervisors and managers in their roles. While these sessions focus on skills for people leaders, the invitation to register is extended to all employees as these may be developmental opportunities for future roles at the university. Some workshops that may interest you include: Manager's Forum: Fostering an Inclusive Workplace - February 23 (in-person) or March 2 (online) - LOD is pleased to introduce a series of short sessions designed to support skills development in managers and supervisors while offering the space to connect with peers in a meaningful and purposeful way. Various topics will be offered. In this session, participants will explore preliminary topics on fostering an inclusive workplace within their work at the University and take part in a collaborative discussion to share experiences, challenges, and strategies. Manager's Forum: Advancing Reconciliation - March 16 (in-person) or March 23 (online) - In this session, participants will explore preliminary materials on advancing reconciliation within their work at the University and take part in a collaborative discussion to share experiences, challenges, and strategies. The session aims to support collective learning and strengthen our shared commitment to reconciliation. Annual Review & Development Plan - February 26 (online) or April 22 (in-person): Performance development is a continuous process to assist employees in performing and enabling them to continuously develop and integrate individual performance goals and strategies with the unit and university's strategic plans. The Annual Review and Development plan is a synopsis and assessment of the year completed and sets expectations for the year ahead. Supervisors are encouraged to attend the training session and to use the tools and guidelines to assist in their planning and preparation of annual performance reviews. UM Collective Agreements (Support Staff) - March 4 (online): This workshop is designed for all UM managers and supervisors and provides a high-level introduction to staff relations responsibilities related to collective agreements with support staff. This session focuses on our human resource management responsibilities and the importance of policies, collective agreements, hiring practices, performance management, discipline, sick leave and other related areas. Some workshops that may interest you include: A Coach-approach to Management - February 11 (New This Year) - This new workshop is part of the new UM Management Essentials program and can also be taken as a stand-alone workshop. Coaching is a powerful tool for enhancing employee wellbeing and performance, and an increasingly important managerial skill in the rapidly changing workplace. This workshop builds a foundational understanding of coaching principles and skills. Participants will learn a coaching model; discuss how and when to integrate taking a coach-approach in their role; and practice coaching skills. Growing your UM Career - February 17 (New This Year) - This session is designed to help you explore and grow your professional path within the UM community. You'll learn how to identify and articulate your transferable skills, tailor your resume to internal opportunities, and prepare for a variety of interview formats with confidence. Whether you're actively seeking a new role or simply planning ahead, this session will provide practical tools and strategies to help you map your career journey at UM. Presentation Skills - February 3 - Any of us may be called upon to make a presentation, at a meeting, during an interview or when trying to convince or influence others. This workshop will provide you with tools to help you to prepare your presentations, follow the V.O.I.C.E. model to make presentations, and review the use of the most common visual aids. Good morning I hope that you are keeping well. I am pleased to tell you that Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened registration in our workshops in our LODReg tool to the end of January. Some workshops that may interest you include: Foundations of Management - January 13 - This new workshop is the first in the new UM Management Essentials Program and can be taken as a stand-alone workshop. Participants will explore the range of the managerial role such as identifying workstyles, communication skills, addressing challenges, relationship building, institutional supports and tools, and their role in advancing reconciliation. A Coach-approach to Management - January 20 - This new workshop is part of the new UM Management Essentials program and can be taken as a stand-alone workshop. Coaching is a powerful tool for enhancing employee wellbeing and performance, and an increasingly important managerial skill in the rapidly changing workplace. Taking Minutes for Meetings - December 11 (online) - Minutes of meetings form an important record of the decisions made by our community. During this workshop, participants will explore the steps involved in pre-planning minutes for the meeting; keeping track of items during the meeting; transcribing notes into minutes following the meeting; distributing minutes; filing as needed; and will receive templates and examples for future use. New Support Staff Orientation - January 22 (online) - If you are a new support staff employee, or have hired a new support staff employee, there are regular orientation sessions offered through LOD which are available both in-person and online. Microsoft 365 sessions: I.S.T. Engagement Services provides several Microsoft 365 sessions covering topics related to Microsoft 365: Introduction to Teams, Sharing Files, Storage Management, Utilizing Channels, Loop and more. Good afternoon I hope that you are keeping well and enjoying the fall term. I am pleased to tell you that Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened workshops in our LODReg tool to the end November. Some workshops that may interest you include: Annual Review & Development Plan - November 4. Managers, Supervisors, and those responsible for providing feedback and direction on the work performed by others are encouraged to complete this workshop which covers conducting annual performance reviews, using one of the forms available from Human Resources, and creating employee development plans. UM Collective Agreements (Support Staff) - November 5. This workshop is designed for all UM managers and supervisors and provides a high level introduction to staff relations responsibilities related to collective agreements with support staff. This session focuses on our human resource management responsibilities and the importance of policies, collective agreements, best hiring practices, performance management, discipline, sick leave and other related areas. Ethics: Decisions and Impacts - November 13. NEW THIS YEAR: In this workshop we will provide a framework for making decisions when ethics are in play. We will also examine the impacts of ethical decisions and how we might address situations where a decision that has been made may not be ethically sound. **This is a four-hour workshop. This workshop was developed in 2025 and is unique from the previous "Ethics in the Workplace" and "Ethics: Organizational Stewardship" workshops offered by LOD previously. Hiring in Good Ways - November 20. It is important to consider Indigenous-specific hiring practices, and those involved in hiring will benefit from increasing their awareness and understanding of Indigenous history and culture. During this session, participants will examine the historical relationships between Indigenous peoples and post-secondary institutions and explore the potential impact of historical relationships on Indigenous applicants. Presentation Skills - November 20. Any of us may be called upon to make a presentation, at a meeting, during an interview or when trying to convince or influence others. Knowing how to prepare, to use our voice, and how to organize our materials can help us to engage our audience and share our message. LOD Fall Workshops - open for registration

Good morning I am pleased to tell you that Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened our training and development workshops for the early part of fall, including sessions scheduled until the end of October. These learning opportunities are available exclusively to University of Manitoba employees. Some training opportunities that may interest you include: UM Management Essentials Program - LOD is pleased to be offering a new certificate program for managers that will launch in early 2026. There will be a pilot offering, in an accelerated format, October 22 to 29, 2025. Applications to participate in the accelerated pilot offering close September 8. The program includes 6 learning days and a Capstone, and will focus on best practices for self, people, and team management, to assist managers in achieving results aligned with UM strategic priorities. Inclusive Hiring Practices - Those involved in recruitment, selection, hiring and onboarding functions for non-academic employees hold special responsibilities when conducting these activities. This workshop provides a foundation of knowledge that will support our institutional efforts to have consistent and widespread integration of inclusive hiring practices. Critical Dialogues - If you work as part of a team, support others' work, explain or share information, this communication skills workshop may be helpful for you to learn more about how to have successful conversations. This workshop covers topics relating to clarity, nonverbal communication, listening, empathy, respect, feedback and more. Hello As summer approaches, I want to note some important learning and development offerings. Highlighting the Support Staff Learning and Development Policy: this policy outlines the university's commitment to supporting the learning and development of support staff employees. Support staff may be eligible for reimbursement of University of Manitoba undergraduate degree-credit tuition, on a course-by-course basis. This is a great time to consider your plans for fall and winter courses. Interested in Psychology? Want to learn French? You can take an occasional course or work towards an undergraduate degree - the choice is yours. This workshop introduces you to general project management processes, techniques, and vocabulary. Participants will leave with an understanding of the project management process from start to finish and able to contribute to the implementation of large projects and to lead small projects effectively. New Support Staff Orientation, Thursday, May 22 OR Thursday June 19, 9:00 am to 4:00pm. If you are a new support staff employee, or have hired a new support staff employee, there will be two Orientation sessions held this spring. The "Pathing Your UMCareer" series is moving online this spring to increase accessibility to these short sessions, which are designed to support you in your career planning at UManitoba. Good morning Happy New Year ! I am pleased to tell you that Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened our training and development workshops for February, 2025. Some workshops that may interest you include: Pathing Your UMCareer- Resumes: Monday, February 3, 10:30am to noon. The newest edition to our series designed to support employees in career planning, this session covers how to craft your resume in a way that showcases you as an applicant for a role within the University. Participants will have the opportunity to practice tailoring a resume to a job posting and receive strategies to prepare you to apply for future opportunities. Critical Dialogues: Monday, February 3, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. If you work as part of a team, support others' work, explain or share information, this communication skills workshop may be helpful for you to learn more about how to have successful conversations. This workshop covers topics relating to clarity, nonverbal communication, listening, empathy, respect, feedback and more. Making Meetings More Effective: Monday, February 10, 1:00 to 4:00pm. In this workshop, participants will examine the most common types of meetings including information sharing; decision making; and process & planning. Using the CANOE model, participants will be able to plan and facilitate a structured and productive meeting. Social Intelligence: Building Impactful Relationships: Monday, February 24, 1:00 to 4:00pm. By identifying the social intelligence characteristics within ourselves, and recognizing these characteristics in others, participants will develop approaches to working with others more effectively. Microsoft 365 sessions: I.S.T. Engagement Services provides several Microsoft 365 sessions covering topics related to Microsoft 365, Teams, Sharing Files, MS Forms and more. Good morning I hope that you are keeping well. I am pleased to tell you that Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened our training and development workshops for January, 2025. Some workshops that may interest you include: Training: Design & Development: Monday, January 13, 1:00 to 4:00pm. If you are ever called upon to train others, this half-day workshop will give you a solid foundation in the training design models we use in LOD to support people to learn new skills in a collaborative and engaging environment. Managing the Respectful Workplace: Thursday, January 16, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm (online via Webex). We all hold a responsibility to avoid behaviours that, even unintentionally, may reasonably offend, intimidate, embarrass or humiliate others. This workshop explores ways that all of us, and especially those with people management responsibilities, can support a respectful workplace. Influencing Change: Monday, January 20, 1:00 to 4:00pm. Using influence to initiate and support change means having an impact on achieving results and being able to recognize the key moments, or conversations, where you can make a difference. Change Models and Methods: Monday, January 27, 1:00 to 4:00pm. There are several models and methods to approach, implement, coordinate and support change. In this workshop, participants will review the characteristics of several common change models and explore the strengths and challenges of each. Introduction to Human Resources: Tuesday, January 21 from 9:00am to 4:00pm (online via Webex). This workshop explores the human resources aspects of the employee life cycle. While this is the first workshop in the UM Human Resources Essentials Program, it can be taken as a stand-alone workshop for those who want to learn more about human resource management at the university. Introduction to Management: Wednesday, January 22, from 9:00 am to 4:00pm. Learn the fundamentals about setting strategy, creating values, and developing management styles, along with practicing basic coaching skills. While this is the first workshop in the UM Management Fundamentals Program, it can be taken on its own by anyone who wants to learn about managing and supervising others at the university. This four-hour workshop engages participants in conversation and activities to explore our ethical obligations and opportunities. Critical Dialogues - Monday, November 25, from 1:00 to 4:00pm. This session provides great models and practices for ways to communicate and collaborate with others. Project Management - Wednesday, December 4, from 9am to 4pm. This interactive workshop offers a great foundation in how to manage a project from start to finish. Pathing Your UMCareer: Transferable Skills - Monday, December 2, from 2:00 to 3:30pm. We might be limiting ourself from future opportunities by not recognizing how skills in one area can be transferred to other roles. This short session encourages support staff to explore their knowledge, skills, and talents and describe them in ways that relate to other UManitoba opportunities they may want to pursue. New Support Staff Orientation - Thursday, November 21, from 9am to 4pm. If you are, or have hired, new support staff who have not yet attended an Orientation session, this is the opportunity. Our fall learning calendar will be open for registration in late August, and we are already working on new workshops and sessions to support your career development. We will have several offerings of both ‘Introduction to Management’ and ‘Introduction to Human Resources’, which are great foundational workshops to explore supervisory skills and human resources practices here at the University of Manitoba. Both can be taken as a stand-alone workshop and are also the prerequisite for their respective certificate programs: the UM Management Fundamentals Program (UMMFP) or the UM Human Resources Essentials Program (UMHREP). If you have started either of those certificate programs, maybe next fall will be your opportunity to complete your certificate.
