Good morning Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened our training and development workshops for the early part of fall (September-October). We open the calendar six to eight weeks in advance throughout the learning year and I encourage you to check LODReg regularly to view all of the employee learning and development opportunities as they become available. These are available exclusively to University of Manitoba employees. Some training opportunities that may interest you include: Core Skills for Supervisors (NEW): This is a micro-credential designed to equip managers and supervisors with the essential skills to perform the supervisory functions of their role. Comprised of four half-day workshops that can be completed in person at the Fort Garry or Bannatyne campuses, or online, that cover the essential skills for those with people leadership responsibilities. Employees have up to a year to complete the requirements for the micro-credential. Participants will learn how to use coaching conversations to foster ownership, solve problems, and support development. Ethics: Decisions and Impacts: (New for 2026 to 2028): LOD offers a customized, four-hour ethics workshop designed for university employees who are interested in learning more about ethical behaviour and decision-making, and for those who require completion of an ethics workshop to maintain their professional designation. Introduction to Human Resources: This full day workshop, available online and in-person, provides an overview of human resources at the university. Topics relating to hiring, onboarding, development, staff relations, performance management and retirement are covered. This workshop can be taken on its own, and is also the pre-requisite for workshops in the UM Human Resources Essentials certificate program. New Support Staff Orientation: If you are a new support staff employee, or have recently hired a new support staff employee, we regularly offer both in-person and online orientation through LOD. Hello I hope that you are enjoying the warmer weather and perhaps looking forward to some summer vacation. I'd like to highlight some of the staff training and development sessions happening in June. These opportunities are available exclusively to UManitoba employees. Manager's Forum: Advancing Reconciliation - June 8, noon to 1:00pm (online). While designed for those with people leadership responsibilities, our Manager's Forums are open to all employees who are interested in the topic. In this session, we will explore what advancing reconciliation means to us and our units, and engage in small group discussion to share experiences, challenges and strategies on what we can all do to advance reconciliation. The session aims to support collective learning and strengthen our shared commitment to reconciliation. Introduction to Human Resources - June 23, 9:00am to 4:00pm (in person). Knowledge of core human resources policies, systems and practices as they are performed at the University of Manitoba is essential for those university support and administrative staff who currently perform, or wish to learn about, HR practices at UM. During this session participants; are introduced to the full employee life cycle; will review resources, supports, policies and processes available to support their HR practices; explore topics including accommodation, equity, diversity and inclusion; and examine when to seek additional guidance in HR matters within their unit/ faculty/ department. A Coach-approach to Management - June 25, 9:00am to 4:00pm (in person). Coaching is a powerful tool for enhancing employee wellbeing and performance, and an increasingly important managerial skill in the rapidly changing workplace. This workshop builds a foundational understanding of coaching principles and skills. Participants will discuss how and when to integrate coaching into their management role, and practice skills that will allow them to take a coach-approach in their role. Microsoft 365: I.S.T. Engagement Services provides several Microsoft 365 sessions covering topics related to Microsoft 365 such as Sharing Files, MS Forms, Utilizing Channels, and more. Hello As summer approaches, I want to note some important learning and development offerings. These opportunities are available exclusively to UManitoba employees. Highlighting the Support Staff Learning and Development Policy: this policy outlines the university's commitment to supporting the learning and development of support staff employees. Support staff may be eligible for reimbursement of University of Manitoba undergraduate degree-credit tuition, on a course-by-course basis. This is a great time to consider your plans for fall and winter courses. Interested in Psychology? Want to learn French? You can take an occasional course or work towards an undergraduate degree - the choice is yours. Hello I am pleased to highlight some of the upcoming LOD offerings which support supervisors and managers in their roles. While these sessions focus on skills for people leaders, the invitation to register is extended to all employees as these may be developmental opportunities for future roles at the university. Some workshops that may interest you include: Manager's Forum: Fostering an Inclusive Workplace - February 23 (in-person) or March 2 (online) - LOD is pleased to introduce a series of short sessions designed to support skills development in managers and supervisors while offering the space to connect with peers in a meaningful and purposeful way. Various topics will be offered. In this session, participants will explore preliminary topics on fostering an inclusive workplace within their work at the University and take part in a collaborative discussion to share experiences, challenges, and strategies. Manager's Forum: Advancing Reconciliation - March 16 (in-person) or March 23 (online) - In this session, participants will explore preliminary materials on advancing reconciliation within their work at the University and take part in a collaborative discussion to share experiences, challenges, and strategies. The session aims to support collective learning and strengthen our shared commitment to reconciliation. Annual Review & Development Plan - February 26 (online) or April 22 (in-person): Performance development is a continuous process to assist employees in performing and enabling them to continuously develop and integrate individual performance goals and strategies with the unit and university's strategic plans. The Annual Review and Development plan is a synopsis and assessment of the year completed and sets expectations for the year ahead. Supervisors are encouraged to attend the training session and to use the tools and guidelines to assist in their planning and preparation of annual performance reviews. UM Collective Agreements (Support Staff) - March 4 (online): This workshop is designed for all UM managers and supervisors and provides a high-level introduction to staff relations responsibilities related to collective agreements with support staff. This session focuses on our human resource management responsibilities and the importance of policies, collective agreements, hiring practices, performance management, discipline, sick leave and other related areas. Some workshops that may interest you include: Foundations of Management - January 13 - This new workshop is the first in the new UM Management Essentials Program and can be taken as a stand-alone workshop. Participants will explore the range of the managerial role such as identifying workstyles, communication skills, addressing challenges, relationship building, institutional supports and tools, and their role in advancing reconciliation. A Coach-approach to Management - January 20 - This new workshop is part of the new UM Management Essentials program and can be taken as a stand-alone workshop. Coaching is a powerful tool for enhancing employee wellbeing and performance, and an increasingly important managerial skill in the rapidly changing workplace. This workshop builds a foundational understanding of coaching principles and skills. Participants will learn a coaching model; discuss how and when to integrate taking a coach-approach in their role; and practice coaching skills. Project Management - December 10 or January 15 - Learn how to plan your next project using a simple and structured step-by-step process. This session will introduce you to the basics of project management from start to finish; how to contribute to the implementation of large projects; and how to lead small projects effectively. Taking Minutes for Meetings - December 11 (online) - Minutes of meetings form an important record of the decisions made by our community. During this workshop, participants will explore the steps involved in pre-planning minutes for the meeting; keeping track of items during the meeting; transcribing notes into minutes following the meeting; distributing minutes; filing as needed; and will receive templates and examples for future use. Good afternoon I hope that you are keeping well and enjoying the fall term. I am pleased to tell you that Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened workshops in our LODReg tool to the end November. Some workshops that may interest you include: Annual Review & Development Plan - November 4. Managers, Supervisors, and those responsible for providing feedback and direction on the work performed by others are encouraged to complete this workshop which covers conducting annual performance reviews, using one of the forms available from Human Resources, and creating employee development plans. UM Collective Agreements (Support Staff) - November 5. This workshop is designed for all UM managers and supervisors and provides a high level introduction to staff relations responsibilities related to collective agreements with support staff. This session focuses on our human resource management responsibilities and the importance of policies, collective agreements, best hiring practices, performance management, discipline, sick leave and other related areas. Ethics: Decisions and Impacts - November 13. NEW THIS YEAR: In this workshop we will provide a framework for making decisions when ethics are in play. We will also examine the impacts of ethical decisions and how we might address situations where a decision that has been made may not be ethically sound. **This is a four-hour workshop. This workshop was developed in 2025 and is unique from the previous "Ethics in the Workplace" and "Ethics: Organizational Stewardship" workshops offered by LOD previously. Hiring in Good Ways - November 20. It is important to consider Indigenous-specific hiring practices, and those involved in hiring will benefit from increasing their awareness and understanding of Indigenous history and culture. During this session, participants will examine the historical relationships between Indigenous peoples and post-secondary institutions and explore the potential impact of historical relationships on Indigenous applicants. Presentation Skills - November 20. Any of us may be called upon to make a presentation, at a meeting, during an interview or when trying to convince or influence others. Knowing how to prepare, to use our voice, and how to organize our materials can help us to engage our audience and share our message. This workshop will provide you with tools to help you to prepare your presentations, use your V.O.I.C.E. and review the use of the most common visual aids. The program includes 6 learning days and a Capstone, and will focus on best practices for self, people, and team management, to assist managers in achieving results aligned with UM strategic priorities. Hello As summer approaches, I want to note some important learning and development offerings. Highlighting the Support Staff Learning and Development Policy: this policy outlines the university's commitment to supporting the learning and development of support staff employees. Support staff may be eligible for reimbursement of University of Manitoba undergraduate degree-credit tuition, on a course-by-course basis. This is a great time to consider your plans for fall and winter courses. Interested in Psychology? Want to learn French? You can take an occasional course or work towards an undergraduate degree - the choice is yours. For more information about eligibility for tuition reimbursement for University of Manitoba undergraduate degree-credit courses, you can review the Support Staff Learning and Development Procedure<https://umanitoba.ca/governance/governing-documents-staff#support-staff-lea…> document. **Remember that requests for reimbursement must be submitted to LOD prior to, or no later than at the time of, registering for the course(s). Special sessions for groups and teams: LOD has a selection of short sessions that are available exclusively for groups and teams. These engaging, interactive sessions foster a collaborative environment for team members to work together in new, fun, and interesting ways. These sessions are also suitable as part of a retreat or team-building day.
