Hi everyone! Reminder that OPTRA is this FRIDAY!! OPTRA (One Party To Rule them All) is a med school tradition where M4s host a party to fundraise for their graduation events. Not only is it a way to meet your peers in all years, but is also an excuse to escape the stresses of school and have fun! Tickets: $40 We know this is steep, but with a ticket, you get an open bar and kegs, Krispy Kreme donuts, pizza, a hot chocolate bar, and a live DJ. Additionally, with the purchase of this ticket, you will be entered in a draw for a Patagonia sweater with the medical school logo on it. We have two medium fleece Patagonia sweaters, one black and one white. The winner will be announced at OPTRA! +1s are allowed and will have to purchase a ticket as well. The event is APRES SKI theme, which means dress for the slopes! Wear your best goggles, retro sweaters, earmuffs, toques, ski pants or anything you can find! Hi everyone, Happy New Year, I hope everyone had a restful winter break. I want to share some updates from the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS). Here's a quick overview of what's coming up, there are more details below if something interests you. * Student Leadership Awards: Two scholarship deadlines are approaching this week. If you're eligible, I highly encourage you to apply! * National Wellness Challenge: A fun 4-week long challenge starts this week. It's easy to join and you could win some really cool prizes. * Student Initiative Grants: If you have an initiative or a project idea, consider applying. Applications are due February 1st, 2026. * Canadian Medical Student Conference: The annual conference will take place April 16-19th, 2026, in Ottawa, ON. The mission of MSAW is to create a student-led representative organization by, and for, medical students studying in Western Canada. Further, the unifying body will act as a strong advocacy pillar in approaching student advocacy at the annual Western Dean's Conference. What are we recruiting for? This project is looking for motivated, interested, and engaged students from all of the representative Western medical schools to join the MSAW Implementation Team. My name is Carolyn Horwood, and I am your Western Regional Director on the board of the Canadian Federation of Medical Students. I am excited to invite you to take part in the First in Medicine Mentorship Program, a new pilot initiative designed to support medical students who are the first in their families to pursue a career in medicine. Being the first in your family to pursue medicine can be both exciting and isolating. This pilot project has been created to provide an avenue for medical students to act as peer supports for students who are the first in their families to pursue medicine. This mentorship program was created to foster a supportive community where students can connect with peers who understand the unique challenges of navigating medical school without familial experience in the field. As a mentor, you’ll play a meaningful role in building confidence, sharing insight, and helping to shape a more inclusive and empathetic medical community. Interested mentors should meet the following criteria when submitting their interest in applying: * A current second-year or above student pursuing a medical doctor (MD) program at an accredited CFMS-member institution in Canada * The first in their immediate family to pursue a medical (MD) program Mentors will be asked to fulfill the following responsibilities: * Engage in at least three meetings with their mentee(s), occurring for a minimum of one hour in duration * Provide support via electronic communication (email or other preferred method) on a regular basis with mentee(s) Students interested in applying to become a mentor are asked to fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/UsQJUwXXGuuiQbQH6 This form will be open until September 26, 2025, at 11:59pm PDT. Hi everyone, I would like to announce the official start of the nomination period for the CL2028 Class Council elections. Nominations begin today and will close April 22nd at 11:59pm. The positions that are elected to the Med 2 class council are: * Class President * Academic Representatives (2 positions) * Social Representatives (2 positions) * Sports Representatives (2 positions) * Wellness Representatives (2 positions) Each position is self-nominated. To nominate yourself, fill out the linked Nomination Form<https://forms.office.com/r/wS2Mc0iNjH> with the position you are running for and a written platform of no more than 300 words (500-word max for those running for Class President). Please note: Each candidate must run independently -- no candidates may run as a group/slate during the election (including for positions that have multiple representatives). You may also submit a video of a speech outlining your platform. Speeches must be no longer than 3 minutes (5 minutes for Class President nominees) and must not include any form of editing or visual aid. You can submit your video to me any way that works for you (Eg. OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.) and I will send out a link to the videos during the voting period. Good Morning Med Students, Please note the new microwaves are now installed in the student lounge. Please do not move them around. Also if there are issues in future with their function please notify UGME via email at: bro260re(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:bro260re@umanitoba.ca> and unplug them for safety reasons. Also your kitchen has been tidied in order to facilitate the install and all items may not have been placed back where they were due to this, but have been left in the room. And lastly a few reminders to keep the lounge functional and pleasant for all: * Please avoid overloading any electrical outlets. The reason some outlets were not working is that the breakers have been tripped from being overloaded. Please limit what you are plugging in. * Cleaning the fridge and microwaves is not considered the caretaking staff's responsibility. * Kindly clean up after yourself to ensure the space is ready for the next person. BSc Med/ One Summer Research Projects

Hi everyone, I just wanted to pass on some information about the upcoming 2025 BSc Med and One Summer research projects. All abstracts have been uploaded to the BSc Med website<https://umanitoba.ca/explore/programs-of-study/medicine-bsc-med>, and it is strongly encouraged that students interested in participating in the summer research program to review the abstracts and contact the project supervisors at their earliest convenience, as project availability may be limited. Key Components of the program: • Two summer terms (each term between 12 – 13 weeks long with 2 weeks’ vacation included) • Students review posted (web) abstracts from prospective supervisors or may choose to find a project/supervisor on their own • B.Sc. Med and One Summer Medical Student Research programs must be submitted via Survey Monkey by December 1, 2024 @ 12 noon. Hi everyone, Congratulations on being accepted into the Max Rady College of Medicine!! I’m Dustin, the President of the Class of 2027. To ensure that you are all able to connect with your classmates as soon as possible, we have created a Facebook page for your class. In addition to hosting introductions from your class, this will be the main source of communication between the Orientation Week Coordinators, Manitoba Medical Students’ Association (MMSA), and your class.
