Reminder re: scents - Rady FHS Attire and Dress Code

Hi Med 1s and 2s, You may or may not be aware that the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences has an Attire and Dress Code Guideline, which can be accessed below. This is a simple, short guideline providing reasonable direction. Part of this guideline relates to scents: 2.4 Scented products should be avoided, recognizing that some individuals have allergies and/or are sensitive to certain chemicals in scented products. Fragrances and other scented hygiene products shall not be used/worn in designated scent free zones. In areas that are not designated scent free zones, fragrances and scented hygiene products shall be used/worn in moderation and shall abide by any directions received in regard to the limitation or use of products with scents and/or fragrances to accommodate those with scent and/or fragrance allergies. In UofM classrooms and shared spaces on campus, please be mindful of those with allergies or sensitivities and try to avoid using scented products. Good morning everyone, As you know, there were many problems at the exam today - ExamSoft was having problems and students couldn't download the exam. Then there were problems uploading the exam. In the end, students were successful at uploading though it took a while. For some students, they had to write their exams on paper. For those students, they will not be able to get a Student Report for this exam as I will have to hand mark them. I will upload your marks to Entrada when I release the marks to the rest of the class. I want to say a huge THANK YOU to the class for being so patient and understanding. This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Jim Butler, Associate Dean UGME: Dear Class of 2029, Undergraduate Medical Education has undertaken a process to evaluate all components of its program throughout the academic year. The purpose of the instructor evaluation, like the other types of evaluations, is to provide feedback on teaching and learning which will be used to make improvements to the academic program. The instructor evaluation instrument is attached. Your class has been randomly organized into two groups; each group will evaluate a specified number of instructors. In accordance with Program Evaluation Policy & Procedures, all instructors who teach three or more lectures in the Blood and Immunology (BI1) course will be evaluated using the stated instrument. These evaluations are to be completed after the final lecture of each noted instructor. Reminder: 1. NO CELLPHONES ALLOWED IN THE EXAM ROOM * Someone had a phone in the room, and it was dinging. This is against the University exam policy as well as UGME's exam policy. You have been told to leave everything in your lockers and this includes cell phones. * If this was someone's laptop or tablet that was dinging, make sure you turn off all notifications before the exam. You are disturbing the students around you. We don't want to accuse you of having a cell phone if you don't' have one. 1. You must enter the exam room from the second floor doors AFTER you sign in. Do not come in through the first floor doors. Give yourself enough time to go upstairs. I have told the invigilators to send people upstairs if they come in the bottom doors.. This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Padma Mongru, Director, Pre-Clerkship Curriculum: ________________________________ Dear Students, On behalf of the Department of Family Medicine, I would like to thank you for attending Med.Zero at the Max Rady College of Medicine last month! We enjoyed meeting all of you and having the opportunity to introduce you to the specialty of Family Medicine, as well as introducing you to some of our wonderful Family Physicians and Family Medicine residents. We hope that you were able to learn a little bit more about Family Medicine, had fun learning new clinical skills, and enjoyed meeting your classmates. We also hope that you found it a worthwhile experience and that it was a fun way to ease into medical school. We encourage you to get involved during med school and learn more about the various specialties (including Family Medicine) and learn and discover what you are passionate about. Shadowing a physician is a great way to gain experience and learn more about a specialty outside of the classroom. There are also many student interest groups and joining FMIG (the Family Medicine Interest Group) is a wonderful way to meet family physicians, learn more about the specialty, about applying to CaRMS, learn new skills, and a lot more. I also encourage you to ask a lot of questions while you're a student and keep an open mind as you go through your studies. If you have any questions that did not get answered during Med.Zero, please feel free to email me (about Family Medicine, med school, etc.). Or if you have specific questions for any of the preceptors who taught the clinical skills workshops or the doctors who were on the panel, we will gladly pass along your questions. MMSA EDI Working Group Applications

Hey everyone, I hope you’re all doing well! Reminder that the EDI Working Group applications close tonight! Please see the message from last week below again, and let me know if you have any questions or if you require any extensions in the application! Information about time commitment and other logistics is also included below. Take care and best of luck with Foundations! Kindly, Fatima ________________________ Under the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) portfolio of the MMSA, 3 working groups exist to address various topics and focus on projects that work towards improving equity and inclusivity in medical school. These groups are: * Race and Ethnicity * 2SLGBTQIA+ * Accessibility The members of these groups take part in various activities throughout the year, including curriculum review, advocacy and information campaigns, and event planning. Some examples of events completed over the past year include: * History and Medicine Showcase Night highlighting how various medical innovations have roots in marginalized communities. Indigenous physicians as well as historians had a sit down conversation while students enjoyed a catered lunch. Part of this event was an Instagram highlight of various innovations that students researched. * EDI and Global Health Conference: the largest student run medical conference in Manitoba is planned by the EDI working group members! Topics of past years include patient advocacy and healing forward, and the conference brings together medical students, residents, staff, and community members over a full day of speaker highlights and interactive sessions. * Curriculum reviews: students in the working groups work with course leads to review course topics and address where equity directed changes and improvements can be made, as well as where new content can be added. More information about curriculum reviews is included in the application form questions. * Lunch and Learn series: students from various working groups brought in speakers to discuss topics, such as working in South Africa as a Black physician during Apartheid, throughout the school year so students could learn from physicians while enjoying a free lunch. * Members are able to join the RFHS EDI committee, and be involved in projects beyond the medical school. * Members may also work with other physicians, healthcare workers and/or community members who can advocate for equity focused changes. The goals and outcomes for the working groups are very much determined each year by the members, so if you are interested in having an idea come to life or to be involved in meaningful work during medical school, joining a working group is an excellent opportunity to do so! The time commitment depends on how involved you are interested in being. Most members spend an average of less than 1 hour per month on activities related to the group, with meetings occurring 4-5x per year. There will be various projects, including in areas of curriculum, advocacy, and events for you to choose from, and members are asked to participate in at least 1 project per year. Working group members will have their work credited on their MSPR, and this will not interfere with the 2 group maximum for Interest Groups. As membership in the working groups is a 2 year term, members selected in their first year of medical school will automatically be in the working group in their second year as well. Pre-Clerkship - Course Evaluations Now Done Post-Exam

Hi Med 1's and 2's, This year, UGME is implementing a change to how course evaluations will be completed by students after each course. Ultimately, we hope this will simplify accessing evaluations and encourage a moment to pause at the most relevant time to provide your feedback. What you need to know: 1. Course evaluations are mandatory - in fact, this is the only truly required program evaluation during Pre-Clerkship. Your feedback directly impacts course improvements, just as past students' feedback has shaped the courses you are receiving now. 1. Dedicated time and space - based on input from student and faculty leadership, course evaluations will now be completed right after your exam, in the exam room. * Course evaluations are to be completed AFTER you submit all exams. You are not expected to use exam time for these evaluations. Course evaluation surveys can be completed in the exam room after the exam time has ended (as long as your exam has been submitted), or earlier if you finish your exam early. * We shouldn't be keeping you long. On average, a course evaluation takes about 5-7 minutes to complete. 1. Delivered via Examsoft/Examplify - for ease of access, course evaluations will be available as a separate download via the examination system. Evaluations staff will provide instructions re: downloading, but it should look similar to your examination downloads. All responses will remain anonymous. Reminder... What course evaluations are not: They're not for feedback on specific exam questions - this should be submitted during the exam. However, in a course evaluation you can (and should) provide general feedback on whether the course assessment felt fair and appropriate. Thank you! Good afternoon everyone, Please note that any deferred final or remedial exams for CV1 and RS1 must be written before CV2 and RS2 start. Since school resumes on a Monday, CV1 deferred final/remedial exam will take place the same afternoon. RS1 deferred final/remedial exam will take place the next Monday afternoon. These exams will be added to Entrada if needed. Should you fail any of these exams, we will schedule a second round - date TBD (depends on if it is the first remedial or second). Note that once dates for the exams have been set, we will not change them based on students' individual travel plans, etc. There is a limited time in which to complete these exams. Hi everyone, Here is a brief summary of what we covered today: 1. How to read the Student Report * Course leaders do not get your individual marks. They are given an overall summary with redacted student names and marks. * They go over the statistics and make changes based on them. * Any questions that perform below 30% are automatically dropped. * For midterms, questions that perform below 60% are reviewed and revised if necessary. Course leaders also prepare a presentation that goes over the concepts that performed poorly. We upload those to Entrada in the Event Resources section of the exam event. They will not contain the actual questions. Usually, course leaders will provide the slides or notes from the curriculum where the material can be found. Use this to help you study for the final exam. We do not do this after the final exams. * Student Report contains CLOs (ex. FM0.1). CLOs can be found in your syllabus. Every question is linked to a CLO. It is to help you figure out where you need to improve. Questions are also tagged with the sessions the question came from. 2. Notes and Feedback * Students can leave comments on each question in the exam. i. Can be found under Tools-Notes ii. Examples of comments: typos, material not covered in lectures, ask for clarification, etc. iii. Course leaders read all the comments and use those to improve questions. iv. They will not respond individually to students as all comments are anonymous. v. Try not to use the comment section to write down your thought process as you work out the answer - use scrap paper for that. You can always ask for more scrap paper from the invigilators if needed. 1. FM0 exam results released same day as you have assignments based on the results. * All other courses - we try to release marks same day but not always possible. Will release them as soon as they are ready. Sometimes we have to consult with the course leaders and instructors if there are comments about questions. Let me know if you have any questions. MMSA Interest Group Information

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all enjoying your first week of Foundations of Medicine! I wanted to reach out to you all to provide a bit more information about our Interest Groups. Interest Groups are student-led groups that highlight specific areas of interest, both within and beyond medicine. They do this by hosting events throughout the year that showcase what makes their focus unique. We have made significant changes to how the Interest Groups operate this year, and we hope that these changes will improve the program for your class and future pre-clerkship students! Interest Groups will now fall under one of five categories: * Academic: Interest Groups for which there is an R1 CARMS program. * Leisure/Sports/Hobby: Interest Groups for interests outside of medicine. * Activism/Advocacy/Service: Interest Groups dedicated to promoting awareness and action on important topics in medicine. * Community: Interest Groups aimed to connect and support students within shared identity groups. * Externally Affiliated Groups: Groups that operate similarly to Interest Groups that are often smaller chapters of larger organizations. A complete list of Interest Groups, as well as a summary of their objectives can be found in the attached document. Here is a brief overview of how the Interest Group Council will be structured: * One Executive in Med 2 who will be responsible for overseeing the activities of the Interest Group Council * One Med 1 Representative who will help the Executive with their duties. The Med 1 Rep will transition into the Executive role upon starting Med 2. * Up to six Council Members, each with roles that are unique to the Interest Group. These positions will be a one year term. These positions are new this year, and the roles have yet to be finalized. Each year the MMSA holds an Interest Group Information Night where the current M2 execs showcase their interest group in the Joe Doupe Concourse (2nd Floor of the BMS). This year our information night is scheduled to take place on September 4th from 6 to 8pm. There will also be a Non-Academic Interest Group information night happening September 5th from 5 to 7pm, which will showcase various groups from the Community and Advocacy/Activism/Service categories. Attendance is completely optional, but this is a great opportunity to learn about all of the interest groups available. Following the info night, I will send out instructions on how to submit your application for the groups you may be interested in! The first round of applications will be for the M1 Representative, and the application will consist of open-ended questions for you to fill out. Each application will then be blinded, and the current M2 execs will select candidates who they believe will be the best fit for the group! MMSA EDI Working Group Applications

Hey everyone, I hope you’re all doing well and congratulations on completing your first exam of medical school! Under the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) portfolio of the MMSA, 3 working groups exist to address various topics and focus on projects that work towards improving equity and inclusivity in medical school. These groups are: * Race and Ethnicity * 2SLGBTQIA+ * Accessibility The members of these groups take part in various activities throughout the year, including curriculum review, advocacy and information campaigns, and event planning. Some examples of events completed over the past year include: * History and Medicine Showcase Night highlighting how various medical innovations have roots in marginalized communities. Indigenous physicians as well as historians had a sit down conversation while students enjoyed a catered lunch. Part of this event was an Instagram highlight of various innovations that students researched. * EDI and Global Health Conference: the largest student run medical conference in Manitoba is planned by the EDI working group members! Topics of past years include patient advocacy and healing forward, and the conference brings together medical students, residents, staff, and community members over a full day of speaker highlights and interactive sessions. * Curriculum reviews: students in the working groups work with course leads to review course topics and address where equity directed changes and improvements can be made, as well as where new content can be added. More information about curriculum reviews is included in the application form questions. * Lunch and Learn series: students from various working groups brought in speakers to discuss topics, such as working in South Africa as a Black physician during Apartheid, throughout the school year so students could learn from physicians while enjoying a free lunch. * Members are able to join the RFHS EDI committee, and be involved in projects beyond the medical school. * Members may also work with other physicians, healthcare workers and/or community members who can advocate for equity focused changes. The goals and outcomes for the working groups are very much determined each year by the members, so if you are interested in having an idea come to life or to be involved in meaningful work during medical school, joining a working group is an excellent opportunity to do so! Working group members will have their work credited on their MSPR, and this will not interfere with the 2 group maximum for Interest Groups. As membership in the working groups is a 2 year term, members selected in their first year of medical school will automatically be in the working group in their second year as well. The election timeline is as follows: * September 9th - 20th at 11:59pm: Nomination Period. * September 22nd – 25th : Voting Period. ADHD is a highly heritable neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 5% of adults across all genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Adults with ADHD often experience barriers in post-secondary institutions due to differences in how they process information creating challenges in areas such as: task initiation, focus, time management, working memory, impulse control, and emotional regulation. While neurodivergence can make academia more challenging, people with ADHD often have unique traits that add value such as creative and innovative thinking and problem-solving skills, the ability to hold multiple perspectives at once, and the ability to maintain a high level of focus and dedication on the subjects they are passionate about. WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE? The group is participatory and facilitated by Jen Porter/SSBC Counsellor. Each of the six sessions will involve a check-in, a brief presentation, and facilitated discussion. WHO CAN REGISTER? This group is for Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and Inner-City Social Work learners who may identify as having ADHD, or experience challenges related to task initiation, focus, emotional regulation, time management, and organization in areas of personal and academic life. The ADHD Information and Support Group is also for learners who are interested in connecting with and learning from their peers, reflecting on their own experiences, and actively trying out new tools and strategies. CL2029 - first exam information

Good morning everyone, Your first exam will take place on Monday, Sept. 8, 2025. Reminder to show up early to sign in as there will be a line up for the first exam. Your sign in table will be on the J.A. Hildes side (across from Theatre B). You will be seated in the middle section (long tables). Do not sit in the side areas. 1. Check Entrada for the room you will be writing in. * Accommodated students - you should have received an email from Student Accessibility Services Bannatyne with your room assignment. If you are unsure of where to go, send me an email. 2. You may not bring any bags, phones, food or drinks, smart watches, headphones, hats, etc. Leave it all in your lockers. You will be sent to put them away if you show up with them. If that makes you late past 9:30 am, you will not be allowed to write the exam. 3. You are allowed to bring in the following items * Pens/pencils * Device you are writing your exam on and charger * Simple calculator (no graphing calculators) * Clear bottle with only water 4. You will be given scrap paper when you sign in. You must write your name on the paper and return it at the end of the exam even if you don't use it. 5. In Theatre A, there is a plug for every seat. * If you are writing in another room, plugs may be limited. Make sure you get there early enough to secure a spot close to one. We can also provide extension cords if needed. However, your devices should always be fully charged for exams. 6. You must show your laptop screen to an invigilator before leaving the room to confirm that you have uploaded your exam. If your exam is not uploaded, I cannot mark it. This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Jim Butler, Associate Dean UGME: Dear Class of 2029, Undergraduate Medical Education has undertaken a process to evaluate all components of its program throughout the academic year. The purpose of the instructor evaluation, like the other types of evaluations, is to provide feedback on teaching and learning which will be used to make improvements to the academic program. The instructor evaluation instrument is attached. Your class has been randomly organized into two groups; each group will evaluate a specified number of instructors. In accordance with Program Evaluation Policy & Procedures, all instructors who teach three or more lectures in the PF1 course will be evaluated using the stated instrument. These evaluations are to be completed after the final lecture of each noted instructor. Your class will be evaluating the following instructors: * Dr. Aviva Goldberg * Dr. Merril Pauls After an instructor completes their final lecture in the course, one of the two groups will be distributed a survey via Entrada.
