Dear Desautels community, You are invited to participate in the annual St. John’s College/Desautels Faculty of Music Ensemble Competition. The application deadline is Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The application form is attached. This competition was initiated in 2020, a counterpart to the Annual Art competition held at St. John’s College. The Preliminary Round will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, adjudicated by a jury panel of Desautels faculty members. The audience will vote on an Audience Choice award at the Final Round; there is no jury at the Finals. The Final Round will take place on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 12:30-1:20 pm, in the St. John’s College Chapel and is part of the final event of their annual Art Competition. Apart from limitations on the size of ensembles listed below, there are no restrictions on the type of ensemble or repertoire. This competition is open to all students in the B. Music, B. Jazz Studies, Post-Bacc, and M. Music. There are three categories: 1) Instrumental Ensemble (2-6 instrumentalists) 2) Singer with Instrumental Ensemble (1 singer, 2-6 instrumentalists) 3) Vocal Ensemble (2-6 singers with or without collaborating musicians) At the Preliminary Round, the jurors will choose one winning ensemble from each category. These groups will each receive a prize of $300, to be split evenly between the members of the ensemble. The three winning ensembles will perform at the Final Round on March 20, 2026, the culmination of the annual St. John’s College’s Art Competition. An audience prize of $300 will be awarded to one of the three ensembles, to be split evenly between the members of the ensemble. If your ensemble requires accommodation to perform, please inform us when sending your application. This message is being sent on behalf of Jody Stark, Associate Dean (Undergraduate), Desautels Faculty of Music Hi everyone, The Desautels Faculty has 40 spacious practice rooms, all located on the 4th floor of our building. Each practice room features a piano - usually a Yamaha or Kawai - and has acoustic panelling for optimum sound quality. Two designated jazz ensemble rooms are equipped with a piano and full drum kit. All Music students have access to the 4th floor practice rooms, which are accessible with the use of your swipe card. However, only Music students registered in Major Practical study and/or Credit Recital are allowed to reserve time in practice rooms. Until the practice room schedule is finalized, you are free to use any open practice room. After the schedule is finalized and posted, if a practice room is empty please feel free to use it. However, if another student arrives and has booked the room, please respect their booking and let them use the room. Attached, please find a map of the 4th floor and a list of the instruments housed in each practice room. The sign-up process for practice rooms will begin on January 12, 2026. Sign-up sheets will be located outside the General Office, T-319, Desautels Faculty of Music. Practice Room Sign Up Procedure: 1. Optional half-juries in December

This message is being sent on behalf of Professor Allen Harrington, Recital/Jury Coordinator (Classical), Desautels Faculty of Music Dear Bachelor of Music Undergraduate students and MPS teachers, For Undergraduate students registered in MPS in the Bachelor of Music (classical area), you have the option of performing a half-jury in December. Here’s what you need to know: 1. The half-jury is optional. If choosing this option, the student must perform 2 half-juries (1 in December and 1 in April) that are each half the length of the normal full jury. 2. The half-juries will take place in the December 9 to 12 range of dates. 3. This option is not available for those students who intend to audition for the Performance Concentration. Those students must perform a full jury in April. 4. Students - I am very pleased to announce that beginning in the 2025-26 academic year, all 4th year undergraduate (BMus and B.Jazz), post-baccalaureate, and graduate performance recitals are able to take place in the Desautels Concert Hall. No venue rental fee will be charged for the use of the concert hall beyond the usual $100 recital fee. Note that there is limited availability in the hall, though a selection of dates in March, April, and May have been reserved for student recitals and a procedure for booking dates will be communicated with you in the coming weeks. Available spring dates will be released in October; jazz students should have thought through their instrumentation by October, so that personnel is known in time for booking recital dates. There will likely be multiple recitals scheduled on a single date to accommodate everyone. Graduate students and all others needing to present a recital outside the March-May period will be able to do so in the Concert Hall as well, scheduled dependent on hall availability. Students continue to have the option of performing in other on-campus venues should you wish, as in previous years. Zita Bernstein German Lieder Competition 2025-26

The deadline to submit your application is Friday, November 7th - 4:30 p.m. Any Full-time Music student in Undergraduate voice program are invited to apply. Attached you will find the application form. Application form must be signed by Major Practical Study instructor. Our adjudicators for the preliminaries will be faculty members, Dr. Laura Loewen, and Katherine Twaddle who will be joined by Sara Schabas. We are so pleased that Sara Schabas can join us and lend her expertise in the field of German Lied with our students with her written comments. Please see Sara’s bio to learn more about this new member of our musical community. The finals will take place on January 18th at 2 p.m. in DCH. Michael McMahon, C.M. will be our guest instructor and head panelist for the finals. We are just thrilled that Canada’s expert on Lied is going to be with us. As we have had in years past Michael will be doing masterclasses over two classes after the competition as well as adjudicating. Joining Michael on the panel will be Andriana Chuchman and Rob Herriot. Rob Herriot, stage director, actor, and singer has been one of our panel for many years who will by flying back from Vancouver where he is directing Cosi Fan Tutti. Andriana Chuchman, who has in recent years adjudicated our preliminary rounds will be part of our panel for the finals. This is an exciting and diverse team for the students for the preliminaries and for the finals. All guest bios are attached, please take a moment to read about our panelists. Please note these important dates: Preliminary Round December 4th, in the VAR T2-266 at 4 p.m. Final Round January 18th, 2026 in DCH starting at 2 p.m. Guest masterclasses Masterclasses with Michael McMahon will happen on Monday and Tuesday, January 19th and 20th - 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Please read the form carefully. You are now required to include the timing of your Lieder set. You are allowed up to 15 minutes but your set may not be that long and for calculating the competition we need the timing of your set. The preliminary round will take place during the masterclass slot and continue past the 5:30 p.m. class time. Attendance will be taken. You are encouraged to stay as long as you are able and listen and support your colleagues. Collaborative Piano Assignment Program

This message is being sent on behalf of Laura Loewen and Judy Kehler Siebert, as Co-directors of Collab Piano Dear MPS Teachers, This email is going out to all your BMus Performance, Post Bac, Pre-Masters, and Masters students. Dear Students, We are pleased to let you know that the Collaborative Piano Assignment Program will continue this year. Through this program, B. Mus Performance Majors, Post-Baccalaureate, Pre-Masters, and Masters students in the Classical Stream may request up to 8 hours per term to rehearse and/or perform with a collaborative piano student. This initiative allows collaborative piano students to explore varied repertoire while working with instrumentalists and singers from across the Desautels Faculty of Music. Assignments may include participation in rehearsals, lessons, and/or studio classes. Please note: if you require additional hours, or if you are asking your pianist to play for a performance, it is your responsibility to make financial arrangements directly with the collaborative pianist. Expectations: * The 8 hours should be spread evenly throughout the term. * Soloists must contact their assigned collaborative pianist within one week of receiving their assignment letter to establish the repertoire they plan to begin with, and a rehearsal schedule. Soloists may forfeit their place in this program if they do not contact the assigned collaborative pianist within one week. * To foster musical growth, we recommend that: * Collaborative pianists attend their partners’ lessons at least once per month. * Soloists periodically attend their collaborative pianists’ lessons and/or studio classes. This message is being sent on behalf of Laura Loewen, Associate Dean (Undergraduate), Desautels Faculty of Music Hi everyone, The Desautels Faculty has 40 spacious practice rooms, all located on the 4th floor of our building. Each practice room features a piano - usually a Yamaha or Kawai - and has acoustic panelling for optimum sound quality. Two designated jazz ensemble rooms are equipped with a piano and full drum kit. All Music students have access to the 4th floor practice rooms, which are accessible with the use of your swipe card. However, only Music students registered in Major Practical study and/or Credit Recital are allowed to reserve time in practice rooms. Until the practice room schedule is finalized, you are free to use any open practice room. After the schedule is finalized and posted, if a practice room is empty please feel free to use it. However, if another student arrives and has booked the room, please respect their booking and let them use the room. Attached, please find a map of the 4th floor and a list of the instruments housed in each practice room. The sign-up process for practice rooms will begin on September 8, 2025. Students need to: * Select and sign up for a timeslot * Arrange for a collaborative pianist to be present at your jury if your repertoire requires it * At your jury, make sure to bring an extra copy of the music for the jurors to view Who does a jury? All students in the Bachelor of Music Program: General Concentration, History Concentration, Performance Concentration** and the Music Education concentrations are required to perform a Jury Examination as part of their Major Practical Study courses. **Students in Performance Concentration are NOT required to perform a Jury Examination for Major Practical Study courses MUSC 3470 and MUSC 4470 if they are registered in a credit recital that year. Here's what you need to know: 1. The half-jury is optional. If choosing this option, the student must perform 2 half-juries (1 in December and 1 in April) that are each half the length of the normal full jury. 2. The half-juries will take place in the December 11 to 13 range of dates. 3. This option is not available for those students who intend to audition for the Performance Concentration. Those students must perform a full jury in April. 4. If they do have these scheduling issues, please work to adapt their lesson time to avoid the double-booking. Zita Bernstein Competition Information Letter

This message is being sent on behalf of Tracy Dahl, Instructor, Desautels Faculty of Music Dear voice faculty and students, For students new to the faculty, there is an annual German Lieder competition for our undergraduate students. Mark and Zita Bernstein created the Zita Bernstein Lieder Competition because of their passion for German Lieder, accompanied by their strong desire to promote the studying of and performing opportunities for students. Undergraduate voice students this competition is for you alone. For those who participated in last year's competition we are following the same timing with the preliminaries in December and the finals in January, but we have a new twist; the finals will be held in the new Desautels Concert Hall. This is a big departure from being in the VAR or in Eva Clare Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to sing on the concert hall stage. A time has been set for the finalist teams to have a rehearsal in the space before the competition to ensure that everyone feels supported and comfortable. That dress rehearsal day is on the Thursday, January 16th, 2025. We are pleased to announce that one of Canada's finest collaborative pianists Steven Philcox will be heading our panel of adjudicators for the Zita Bernstein Lieder competition. Some of you may recall Steven was to have been with us last year but had a family emergency and had to cancel days before the event. We are thrilled that Steven has committed to coming this year. We will gain from his expertise with a masterclass and individual coaching with him while he is here after the competition is completed. Steven Philcox is Associate professor and head of Collaborative piano studies at the University of Toronto. He was a celebrated member of the music staff at the Canadian Opera Company. He is known for recitals and his partnerships with Canada's elite singers. He has garnered praise for curating unique concerts and his non-traditional approaches to performance. His teaching has taken him across Canada, the United States and Europe. Steven is the co-founder of the Canadian Art Song project where they have 6 recordings of Canadian art song, a Juno nomination and encourage and support the writing of new vocal works. Please read the attached form carefully and discuss your choices with your instructor before submitting. The requirements are specified on the application form. Our expectation is that these hours will be spread evenly throughout the term. We are eager for our collaborative students to explore varied repertoire with instrumentalists and singers from the Desautels Faculty of Music. Through these assignments, pianists participate in rehearsals, lessons, and/or master classes. If the soloist requires additional hours or the pianist's participation in a performance, it is their responsibility to make financial arrangements with the collaborative pianist. To encourage musical growth throughout the year, we recommend that collaborative pianists attend the soloists' lessons at least once a month. We also recommend that soloists come to the collaborative pianists' lessons and/or Studio Classes periodically. We are both available to team-coach with you if schedules permit. St. John’s College/Desautels Faculty of Music Ensemble Competition

This message is being sent on behalf of Laura Loewen, Associate Dean (Undergraduate), Desautels Faculty of Music Dear Desautels community, You are invited to participate in the 2nd annual St. John’s College/Desautels Faculty of Music Ensemble Competition. The application deadline is February 27, 2024; the application form is attached. If you need to request a specific time slot for your audition, please note it on your application form. We will do our best to accommodate this request. This competition was initiated in 2020, a counterpart to the Annual Art competition held at St. John’s College. The Preliminary Round will be held on March 2, 2024, adjudicated by a jury panel of Desautels faculty members. The audience will vote on an Audience Choice award at the Final Round; there is no jury at the Finals. The Final Round will take place on March 22, 2024, from 3:30-5:30 pm, in the St. John’s College Chapel and is part of the final event of their annual Art Competition. I’ve spoken with area heads to let them know that the Finals will take place during our Friday afternoon masterclass slot. Apart from limitations on the size of ensembles listed below, there are no restrictions on the type of ensemble or repertoire. This competition is open to all students in the B. Music, B. Jazz Studies, Post-Bacc, and M. Music. There are three categories: 1) Instrumental Ensemble (2-6 instrumentalists) 2) Singer with Instrumental Ensemble (1 singer, 2-6 instrumentalists) 3) Vocal Ensemble (2-6 singers with or without collaborating musicians) At the Preliminary Round, the jurors will choose one winning ensemble from each category. These groups will each receive a prize of $300, to be split evenly between the members of the ensemble. The three winning ensembles will perform at the Final Round on March 22, 2024, the culmination of the annual St. John’s College’s Art Competition. An audience prize of $300 will be awarded to one of the three ensembles, to be split evenly between the members of the ensemble. Please feel free to contact me for more information! Zita Bernstein Lieder Competition 2023-2024 - Opening applications!

This message is being sent on behalf of Tracy Dahl, Instructor, Desautels Faculty of Music Dear voice students, For students new to the faculty, Mark and Zita Bernstein created the Zita Bernstein Lieder Competition with their passion for German Lieder, accompanied by their strong desire to promote the studying of and performing opportunities of Lied for students. Undergraduate voice students this competition is for you alone. We are pleased to announce that one of Canada's finest collaborative pianists Steven Philcox will be heading our panel of adjudicators for the Bernstein Lieder competition. Steven Philcox is Associate professor and head of Collaborative piano studies at the University of Toronto. He was a celebrated member of the music staff at the Canadian Opera Company. He is known for recitals and his partnerships with Canada's elite singers. He has garnered praise for curating unique concerts and his non-traditional approaches to performance. His teaching has taken him across Canada, the United States and Europe. He is the co-founder of the Canadian Art Song project where they have 6 recordings of Canadian art song, a Juno nomination and also encourage and support the writing of new vocal works. Along with this announcement we are attaching your application form. Please read the attached form carefully and discuss your choices with your instructor before submitting. The requirements are specified on the application form. If you have questions address them to your MPS instructor. Note; we require your music when you submit your application for the preliminaries. Translations will only be required for the final round for the program note. Here's what you need to know: 1. The half-jury is optional. If choosing this option, the student must perform 2 half-juries (1 in December and 1 in April) that are each half the length of the normal full jury. 2. The half-juries will take place in the December 12 to 15 range of dates. 3. This option is not available for those students who intend to audition for the Performance Concentration. I am reaching out to ask each of you to recommend a handful of pieces for purchase (3 - 5) that you believe the music library should have available for your students. These could be pieces that are part of the central canon of literature for your instrument, or new pieces of value that you would like your students to have access to. REMINDER: Optional half-juries (for CLASSICAL BMusic students)

This message is being sent on behalf of Professor Allen Harrington, Recital/Jury Coordinator (Classical), Desautels Faculty of Music Dear Bachelor of Music Undergraduate students and MPS teachers, This is a reminder that anyone who would like to do a half-jury must contact Jennifer Wang<mailto:Jennifer.Wang@umanitoba.ca> before FRIDAY, November 18. For Undergraduate students registered in MPS in the Bachelor of Music (Classical), you have the option of performing a half-jury in December. Here's what you need to know: * The half-jury is optional. If choosing this option, the student must perform 2 half-juries (1 in December and 1 in April) that are each half the length of the normal full jury. * The half-juries will take place on December 13 and 14. * This option is not available for those students who intend to audition for the Performance Concentration.
