This message is being sent on behalf of Tracy Dahl, Instructor, Desautels Faculty of Music Dear voice faculty and students, For students new to the faculty, there is an annual German Lieder competition for our undergraduate students. Mark and Zita Bernstein created the Zita Bernstein Lieder Competition because of their passion for German Lieder, accompanied by their strong desire to promote the studying of and performing opportunities for students. Undergraduate voice students this competition is for you alone. For those who participated in last year's competition we are following the same timing with the preliminaries in December and the finals in January, but we have a new twist; the finals will be held in the new Desautels Concert Hall. This is a big departure from being in the VAR or in Eva Clare Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to sing on the concert hall stage. A time has been set for the finalist teams to have a rehearsal in the space before the competition to ensure that everyone feels supported and comfortable. That dress rehearsal day is on the Thursday, January 16th, 2025. We are pleased to announce that one of Canada's finest collaborative pianists Steven Philcox will be heading our panel of adjudicators for the Zita Bernstein Lieder competition. Some of you may recall Steven was to have been with us last year but had a family emergency and had to cancel days before the event. We are thrilled that Steven has committed to coming this year. We will gain from his expertise with a masterclass and individual coaching with him while he is here after the competition is completed. Steven Philcox is Associate professor and head of Collaborative piano studies at the University of Toronto. He was a celebrated member of the music staff at the Canadian Opera Company. He is known for recitals and his partnerships with Canada's elite singers. He has garnered praise for curating unique concerts and his non-traditional approaches to performance. His teaching has taken him across Canada, the United States and Europe. Steven is the co-founder of the Canadian Art Song project where they have 6 recordings of Canadian art song, a Juno nomination and encourage and support the writing of new vocal works. Please read the attached form carefully and discuss your choices with your instructor before submitting. The requirements are specified on the application form. If you have questions, please address them to your MPS instructor. Note: we require your music when you submit your application for the preliminaries. Translations will only be required for the final round for the program note. The deadline for applications is Tuesday November 12th, 2024, please send your application to music(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:music@umanitoba.ca> or drop them off at the Front Office T319 during working hours. Preliminaries are on December 5th, 2024, starting at 3:30 PM at T2-266. The preliminaries happen during the masterclass slot. We will divide the number of applicants into two or three groups, depending on the number of applicants, and continue as long as is necessary. Attendance is required until 5pm end of masterclass slot then you are welcome to stay. Think of it as a wonderful way to hear new repertoire. Finals are on Sunday, January 19th, 2025, at 2 PM at the Desautels Concert Hall. Have fun selecting music. We look forward to receiving your applications. Collaborative Piano Assignments

This message is being sent on behalf of Professor Judy Kehler Siebert Dear Colleagues, We are continuing the Collaborative Piano assignment program this year, in which B. Mus Performance Majors, Post Bacc, Pre-Masters, and Masters students in the Classical Stream can request 8 hours/term with a collaborative piano student, to rehearse and perform. Our expectation is that these hours will be spread evenly throughout the term. We are eager for our collaborative students to explore varied repertoire with instrumentalists and singers from the Desautels Faculty of Music. Through these assignments, pianists participate in rehearsals, lessons, and/or master classes. If the soloist requires additional hours or the pianist's participation in a performance, it is their responsibility to make financial arrangements with the collaborative pianist. To encourage musical growth throughout the year, we recommend that collaborative pianists attend the soloists' lessons at least once a month. We also recommend that soloists come to the collaborative pianists' lessons and/or Studio Classes periodically. We are both available to team-coach with you if schedules permit. We have created a Request Form for students/instructors to fill (attached to this e-mail). The deadline is Wednesday, September 25 at 4:30 pm. All assignments will be made by Judy and Laura. Please scan this form to both of us or drop it in the envelopes posted outside our offices. Please feel free to contact either of us with any questions or concerns. If you chose to not include the full text of the attendance policy for MPS lessons in your syllabus, please add this paragraph in: Attendance at Masterclasses and Studio Classes is an important part of your studies. Other more specific attendance requirements will be set by each instrument/voice area, as will regulations about collaborative musicians. St. John’s College/Desautels Faculty of Music Ensemble Competition

This message is being sent on behalf of Laura Loewen, Associate Dean (Undergraduate), Desautels Faculty of Music Dear Desautels community, You are invited to participate in the 2nd annual St. John’s College/Desautels Faculty of Music Ensemble Competition. The application deadline is February 27, 2024; the application form is attached. If you need to request a specific time slot for your audition, please note it on your application form. We will do our best to accommodate this request. This competition was initiated in 2020, a counterpart to the Annual Art competition held at St. John’s College. The Preliminary Round will be held on March 2, 2024, adjudicated by a jury panel of Desautels faculty members. The audience will vote on an Audience Choice award at the Final Round; there is no jury at the Finals. The Final Round will take place on March 22, 2024, from 3:30-5:30 pm, in the St. John’s College Chapel and is part of the final event of their annual Art Competition. I’ve spoken with area heads to let them know that the Finals will take place during our Friday afternoon masterclass slot. Apart from limitations on the size of ensembles listed below, there are no restrictions on the type of ensemble or repertoire. This competition is open to all students in the B. Music, B. Jazz Studies, Post-Bacc, and M. Music. There are three categories: 1) Instrumental Ensemble (2-6 instrumentalists) 2) Singer with Instrumental Ensemble (1 singer, 2-6 instrumentalists) 3) Vocal Ensemble (2-6 singers with or without collaborating musicians) At the Preliminary Round, the jurors will choose one winning ensemble from each category. These groups will each receive a prize of $300, to be split evenly between the members of the ensemble. The three winning ensembles will perform at the Final Round on March 22, 2024, the culmination of the annual St. John’s College’s Art Competition. An audience prize of $300 will be awarded to one of the three ensembles, to be split evenly between the members of the ensemble. Please feel free to contact me for more information!
