Hello everyone,
We have been contacted by the West Broadway Youth Outreach, who are looking for a neuroscientist to participate in their Dreams Mentorship program. WBYO is a wonderful organization that provides academic and social support to children in the West Broadway neighbourhood. Many of these children are recent immigrants, and others come from disadvantaged backgrounds. There is a strong emphasis on academic achievement in all of their programs, and the students are rewarded for their achievements with opportunities such as the Dreams Mentorship program. Here is their website: http://www.westbroadwayyouthoutreach.com/dreams.html
The Dreams Mentorship program gives students the opportunity to meet someone who is working in the student's "dream" job, which shows the child that their goals are attainable. They have a 10-year old boy who wants to become a neuroscientist, and I am hoping that one of you will step forward to serve as a mentor. Here are the critical details that you need to know:
- This child is NOT going to be working your lab. - This is a one-time meeting. There is NO long-term commitment or project involved. - The meeting lasts about 2 hours and can be scheduled at a time that is convenient for you (it can be over lunch, dinner, etc).
This is a very small gesture that could have an enormous impact on a child's future. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
