The Max Rady College of Medicine is seeking Expressions of Interest from faculty members to serve on the Professional Unsuitability Committee (PUC)
About the Committee: The PUC is a standing committee established under the College's Professional Unsuitability By-Law Professional unsuitability by-lawhttps://umanitoba.ca/health-sciences/rady-faculty-health-sciences-policies#:~:text=health%2Drelated%C2%A0industries-,Professional%20unsuitability%20by%2Dlaw,-Supervision%20of%20learners to hear and determine matters related to a student's competence or professional suitability for practice. The composition of the Committee varies depending on the program in which the student is enrolled.
Appeals from decisions of the College's PUC shall be heard by the University's Senate Committee on Appeals.
The By-Law applies to students enrolled in:
* Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) * Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) * Master of Science in Pathology * Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) * Master of Science in Genetic Counselling
We are seeking faculty members to serve in the following roles:
1. Program Academic Members
* Five-Year Term, with Potential for Renewal * Qualified practitioners who are academic members of one of the above student programs who are qualified practitioners in the profession relevant to the student's program. * Two roles each from; Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME), Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), Master of Science in Pathology, Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS), and Master of Science in Genetic Counselling * Qualified Practitioners are elected by College Council in accordance with the Professional Unsuitability By-Law.
1. Registered Physicians
* Open Term * Full-time academic members of the Max Rady College of Medicine who are registered physicians and have knowledge of professional and regulatory standards. * Two roles. * Registered Physicians are appointed by Dean College of Medicine.
Please note that PUC Committee members must hold a full-time academic appointment with rank within the College of Medicine with membership to the College Council. An individual holding a nil appointment is not eligible for PUC Committee membership.
Members of the PUC will be called upon, as required, to consider matters brought forward under the Professional Unsuitability By-Law. Committee members will be expected to approach this work with fairness, impartiality, sound professional judgment, and respect for procedural fairness and confidentiality.
Given the nature of the Committee's work, members should demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) and anti-oppressive practice, including an awareness of how bias, power, systemic barriers, and social and cultural contexts can shape learners' experiences and perceptions of professionalism. Members should be able to bring this awareness to their deliberations in support of fair, respectful, and equitable decision-making.
Nomination Process:
Faculty interested in serving are invited to submit a brief Expression of Interest identifying:
* Their current academic appointment and program affiliation. * The role(s) for which they are interested in being considered; and * Any relevant experience or knowledge related to professionalism, professional or regulatory standards, learner assessment, adjudication, or similar work. * Experience, knowledge, or perspectives related to EDIA, cultural safety, or working with diverse learners and communities that they would bring to the Committee's work.
