The University of Manitoba Bachelor of Nursing Program implemented a concept-based curriculum in 2016. The effectiveness of conceptual learning, especially in cornerstone courses such as pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment has not been studied. We propose a study using threshold concept theory to identify the threshold concepts of three leveled courses in the Bachelor of Nursing program (NURS2500, 2514, 3512) to understand how concepts in these courses act as portals to professional nursing identity development. Methods: Using a qualitative and quantitative triangulated design we surveyed 300 students and interviewed ten faculty about the troublesome nature of learning concepts in these courses. “Troublesome” means more than struggles with course content and can also include course material that is unsettling, awe inspiring, startling, surprising, or evokes curiosity. Findings: We identified 22 threshold concepts across the three courses from the student data. After layering in the faculty interview data, we identified four overarching concepts: Prioritization, Integrating Pharmacology, Language and Literacy, and Ongoing Assessment. The threshold concepts point to the integrative nature of the material in these courses. Conclusions: Threshold concepts have only been sparsely identified in the nursing profession. This presentation will detail the four threshold concepts identified and discuss how they meet the criteria for threshold concept status. Join Us in Supporting Agape Table: Winter & Hygiene Donation Drive (Oct 9–31)

Dear Nursing Students, We are Year 4 nursing students currently completing our community clinical at Agape Table in the Spence neighborhood. Agape Table is a not-for-profit charity dedicated to reducing food insecurity and supporting marginalized individuals and families through its free bagged lunch and food bank programs. According to the 2021 Census, 36.6% of residents in the Spence neighborhood live on a low income, compared to the Winnipeg average of 11.5%. Since the pandemic, the need for food assistance has increased significantly, and Agape Table now serves approximately 900 meals each weekday (0700–1100) to community members in need. As winter approaches, many guests who socialize outdoors after receiving their meals face additional challenges in the cold. To help meet their needs, we are organizing a Winter and Hygiene Essentials Donation to support them with dignity and compassion. We are collecting the following items: winter jackets, boots, toques, mitts, socks, duvets, blankets, body wash, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, menstrual care products, and hairbrushes. The donation drive will run from October 9th - 31st with two donation bins (one for winter essentials and one for hygiene essentials) located outside the NSA office on the main floor of Helen Glass. Opportunity to Participate in a Nursing Research Study

Hello Nursing Students, Dr. Marnie Kramer, Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing, is inviting students to participate in a research study titled: “Identifying Concepts for Mastery Learning in an Undergraduate Nursing Evidence-Informed Practice Course.” We are looking for students who are currently enrolled in, have completed, or have had an academic or voluntary withdrawal from NURS 3550 – Professional Practice 3: Evidence-Based Practice for Health Professionals within the last year. The purpose of this Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) study is to identify areas within the course where students experience the most difficulty, in order to enhance future learning experiences. Study Details: * You will participate in a virtual focus group lasting approximately 1.5 hours. * Total participation time, including reading the consent form and reviewing your transcript, will be about 2 hours. * A $50 e-transfer will be provided as a thank-you for your time and participation. * Sessions will be scheduled at a time convenient for participants.
