Abstract:

Creating culturally safe spaces in health care requires more than awareness-it calls for reflection, accountability, and meaningful action. Creating Safe Spaces: Indigenous Cultural Safety in Health Care - From Awareness to Action invites health professionals and educators to explore what cultural safety truly means in practice. This session examines how historical and contemporary colonial structures shape the health experiences of Indigenous peoples, and how power imbalances can impact relationships in both clinical and academic environments. Participants will be guided to reflect on their own assumptions and the systems they work within, while learning practical strategies to foster respect, trust, and equity in care delivery and education. By moving beyond cultural competence toward cultural safety, this presentation aims to strengthen professional practice and promote safer, more inclusive environments for Indigenous patients, families, and learners.
