The opportunities for networking within the Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF) are broad, from social events (June 10) such as a social evening and dinner as well as tours... the broad-spectrum symposium by Gairdner laureates (June 11) and meeting with CIHR leadership for a workshop on Career Development (June 12). Carolynne Boivin Scholarship for Family and Gender-Based Violence Research

Colleagues and board members of the RESOLVE (Research and Education for Solutions to Violence and Abuse) Research Network have acknowledged Carolynne Boivin's contribution to the development of their network through the establishment of a student award at The University of Manitoba. Carolynne Boivin worked tirelessly as President and founding member of the PrairieAction Foundation. The foundation was established in 1997 to raise $5 million to endow RESOLVE and to support other research and educational initiatives to reduce violence and abuse in the prairie provinces. RESOLVE Manitoba is grateful for this generous gift, as it will ensure that future generations of family and gender-based violence researchers at the University of Manitoba are supported. For all graduate students, staff and postdocs, this is a must attend event! Dr. Tak Mak is a highly accomplished scientist, a recognizable figure in Immunology in Canada and he also gives an entertaining lecture! There is also a meet and greet Wednesday night, for which you will have to register. Please see the poster for more details.

Application deadline is Friday, October 4, 2019 Catherine Eamer Cooke Memorial Fellowship The purpose of the fund is to provide research support to a medical student, resident, or graduate student who is performing a supervised research project, in the Max Rady College of Medicine, related to the ear. Each year, beginning in 2018-2019, the available annual interest from the fund will be used to award one fellowship to a student who: (1) is enrolled full-time in either: (i) the Undergraduate or Postgraduate Medical Education Program in the Max Rady College of Medicine, or (ii) the Faculty of Graduate Studies in a Master's or doctoral program delivered by the Max Rady College of Medicine; (2) has either: (i) maintained good standing in the Undergraduate or Postgraduate Medical Education Program, or (ii) achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 (or equivalent) in the Faculty of Graduate Studies based on the previous 60 credit hours of study; (3) will be performing a supervised research project related to the ear; (4) has demonstrated outstanding interest or commitment to ear research. Candidates will be required to submit an application (maximum 250 words) addressed to the Department of Otolaryngology, Attention Dr. Paul Kerr, GB421-820 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1R9 which includes the following information: the name of the award, the name of the applicant, the title of the research project, the objective and methods of the research, the research project budget; and a supporting letter from the faculty supervisor which includes a statement about how the student meets criterion (4) above. REQUEST FOR NOMINATIONS Establishment of the Hilary Kaufman Lerner Memorial Fund and Initiation of the HKL Fund Grants Program for Student Research-Trainees in the area of multiple sclerosis and related demyelinating disorders The Fund The Fund has been established in memory of Hilary Kaufman Lerner who died in 2016 of complications associated with a decades-long, progressively debilitating, course of multiple sclerosis that she bore with courage and unstinting determination. Friends and family have contributed to an endowment fund to provide grants to student research trainees in aid of research and advanced studies on multiple sclerosis and related demyelinating disorders. The Grants Program • The HKL Fund Grants Program is designed to assist grant recipients to defray out-of-pocket expenses incurred by them in undertaking his or her activities in research or advanced studies. These may include expenses related to special: special materials and supplies; fees of various kinds (e.g. access to scholarly materials, courses beyond the usual course of study; registration at scientific conferences). • Granted funds may also be used to defray travel expenses incurred in attending conferences at which the student trainee will be making a presentation; or in visiting other centres to learn a new technique or collaborate. • To be eligible for grants from the Fund, student research-trainees must be undertaking or planning to undertake research or advanced studies under the aegis of one or more Colleges of the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Manitoba. Note: College of Dentistry students must be nominated by a faculty member or supervisor from the College of Medicine, Nursing Pharmacy or Rehabilitation Sciences. • The areas of research and study involved may, without limitation, include phenomena at the molecular, cellular, clinical, population or health system level • Candidacy for a grant from the Fund will be based on nomination by a faculty member or supervisor who is an academic member of a College or Colleges under whose aegis the nominee’s research or studies are to take place, or are already taking place. • Nominations require the written approval or endorsement of the relevant Colleges Nominations for a grant from the fund, tenable as of January 2020, are being requested.
