Upcoming events: The Writing Towards a Just World Cluster presents Listening: A tool in Storytelling by Janine Windolph Friday, January 20th, 2023 from 12 - 2 PM CT Hybrid workshop - in person at 307 Tier building and online via Zoomhttps://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_CGSB2WGCT1CvTVx_0fG4YA Janine Windolph is the Director of Indigenous Arts at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. In this workshop, she will discuss the act of listening, a skillset embedded in Indigenous storytelling from a young age through dialogue and exercises. This workshop will highlight Listening with intention and compassion and focus on its importance in developing an array of writing media: documentary making, film making, statement and testimonial writing. The workshop will cover the value of listening in storytelling, approaches to, and strategies for applying to projects in the areas of writing, arts, and film. Reproductive Rites: Book Launch and Abortion Outreach with Dr. Dana Medoro and Dr. Neil McArthur Hosted by Lisa Naylor (Wolseley MLA) at Nicolino's (2077 Pembina Hwy) Thursday, Jan 26th, 2023. Reception starts at 6 PM / Panel Discussion at 7 PM Neil McCarthur and Dana Medoro will launch their books in solidarity with the Women's Health Clinic. This event will be MC'd by Lisa Naylor, formerly an abortion counsellor with the WHC, now the MLA for Wolseley. Small donations will be gratefully accepted for a new ultrasound machine at the WHC. Some books will be available for purchase.

The Department of English, Theatre, Film & Media is pleased to present the 2023 Sidney Warhaft Memorial Lecture with distinguished visiting speaker Drew Hayden Taylor – an award-winning playwright, novelist, journalist, and filmmaker. In this lecture, Drew Hayden Taylor will talk about the changing face of Indigenous literature with notes on his journey through its turbulent waters. The UMIH with U of W WGS Margaret Lawrence Endowment Fund & QPOC Winnipeg present Drop the Mic Sat, Jan 21st at The Goodwill (70 Princess St) from 7 - 9 PM CT Join us for a night featuring local QTBIPOC performances. Queer, trans, two-spirit self-identified, Black, Indigenous and people of color, attendees are welcome to sign up on the spot for a 5-minute slot to share storytelling, poetry, spoken word, comedy, music, dancing, instrumentals, and more. Drop the Mic serves as an opportunity for queer and trans Black, Indigenous and People of Color to take up space, be heard, and share parts of themselves. Doors open at 6:30 PM. The department of Political Studies is excited to announce the 2023 J.W. Dafoe Political Studies Students’ Conference entitled The Hot Artic. Free and open to the public, this annual conference features distinguished Canadian and international speakers exploring issues in international affairs and their implications for Canada. The first lecture is the Paul Buteux Memorial Lecture delivered by Madeleine Redfern, Inuk activist, on Feb 1st from 6 - 8:00 PM CT. There are also three panels running from 10 AM - 4 PM focused on unpacking issues in the Artic on Feb 2nd at the Great Hall (Canadian Museum for Human Rights).
