This is the last day for application for travel awards for the 2014 SFN meeting in Washington. So far we have very few applications. If you submitted an abstract and are a graduate student or a postdoctoral fellow and are interested, please see below. I can extend the deadline by a day if you need a little extra time:
The Society for Neuroscience is offering its Chapters opportunities to complete for travel awards to attend the2014 annual meeting in Washington. Awards are offered to students and postdoctoral fellows. Please submit the materials they ask for below to wcsn(a)sbrc.ca<mailto:wcsn@sbrc.ca> by June 17 if you are interested. We will forward the top application in each category to the SFN. Thanks!
Nomination Materials:
* Completed Graduate Student<http://www.sfn.org/%7E/media/SfN/Documents/Member%20Resources/Chapter%20Tra…> or Postdoctoral Trainee<http://www.sfn.org/%7E/media/SfN/Documents/Member%20Resources/Chapter%20Tra…> application;
* Copy of the abstract submitted for the SfN annual meeting;
* A one-page letter of recommendation from the nominee's mentor/advisor commenting on the nominee's contributions to neuroscience research;
* Applicant's biosketch<http://www.sfn.org/%7E/media/SfN/Documents/Member%20Resources/Chapter%20Tra…> (no more than two pages; visit http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/biosketchsample.pdf for further guidelines).

Dear All,
As you know, we established to Manitoba Neuroscience Network as an offshoot of the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience to enhance interaction among scientists with research interests in the neurosciences. However, the intent was also to leverage the network as a tool to establish an identity for neuroscience research at the University of Manitoba that is currently largely non-existent. I and others have been told over and over that when outsiders, including potential recruits, search "neuroscience" and "umanitoba," there is no useful output. This makes it seem as though we do not do meaningful neuroscience research in Manitoba despite the truth that we have neurosciences PI's approaching 50!
I think we can remedy that very nicely by building a virtual institute with a high-quality, updated, visually pleasing website that features the full breadth of our neurosciences research interests and capabilities. This endeavour was, in fact, near the top of the priority list built by network members at the first scientific meeting during breakout sessions. I would like to make it happen now.
To get this going, I would like to assemble a committee of a few network members to decide on content, design, brand and a way to proceed. I know that there are members who are well-suited for this. Perhaps you would consider lending some time to this. If you are interested in contributing to this process, please contact the Chapter at wcsn(a)sbrc.ca<mailto:wcsn@sbrc.ca>.
Thank you.
