About the Samuel Weiner Distinguished Visitor Award: Samuel Weiner was a European immigrant who became a successful Winnipeg entrepreneur. He was the proprietor of several movie houses in Winnipeg's famous "North End." Best remembered of these were the Starland, the Colonial and the Regent. Mr. Weiner was keenly interested in research. He died in 1960 and left $15,000 to the University of Manitoba. In 1968 the Samuel Weiner Distinguished Visitor Award and its terms of reference were approved by the University Senate. The endowment was recapitalized from interest to allow for annual awards. The first award was made in 1980.
