The Spinal Cord Research Centre
Virtual Memorial for Dr. Larry Michael Jordan
Saturday, December 18 at 3pm CST
Dr. Larry M. Jordan
March 18, 1944 - December 5, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on December 5, 2021 of
our long-time colleague and friend Dr. Larry M. Jordan (PhD, 1971 Texas,
USA). Larry had a long and illustrious career in the Department of
Physiology & Pathophysiology since 1972. He became a full-Professor in 1985
and served as the Physiology and Pathophysiology Department Head from
1992-2001. Larry was a pioneer in neurophysiology with an international
reputation of accomplishments. He established systems physiology and
neuroscience at the University of Manitoba and can be credited with
developing a focus on locomotion and spinal cord injury research here in
Manitoba, culminating in the creation of the Spinal Cord Research Centre
(SCRC) (co-Director 1987-1995 and Director 1996-2003), which has evolved and
continues his legacy to this day. We at the SCRC will all miss Larry and his
energy, wit, and wisdom.
Dr. Jordan's memorial service will be held via a webinar on Saturday,
December 18 at 3pm CST.

TITLE: Challenges in balance control following spinal cord injury
Dorothy Barthélemy, PhD, MSc, pht
Professeure Agrégée/Associate Professor
École de réadaptation, Université de Montréal
RESEARCH PROFILE: A major research theme in my laboratory is to understand
the mechanisms underlying locomotor recovery in individuals with spinal cord
injury, based on their specific lesion. Although the most recognized feature
and hallmark of gait is the rhythmic left-right flexion and extension
movements, balance control is essential to achieve functional locomotion,
but remains poorly understood. In this presentation I will discuss deficits
in neural mechanisms that are reflective of poor balance control in
individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury and novel therapeutic
approaches that could normalize these mechanisms.
All are welcome to attend!
