It's my pleasure to introduce Manitoba neuroscientists to Dr. Tabrez Siddiqui as the most recent faculty appointee to the Neuroscience Research Program at the University of Manitoba/Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Siddiqui is appointed in the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology but his research program will be located in the Kleysen Institute Neuroscience Research Program. Dr. Siddiqui received his PhD in Neurobiology from the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany. Biomedical Engineering seminar on traumatic brain injury

Speaker: Dr. Brittany Coats, PhD (University of Utah) Title: The Effect of the Pia-Arachnoid Complex on Predictions of Traumatic Brain Injury Time: 5:30-6:30 PM Date: Thursday, October 09, 2014 Location: E2-330 Engineering Building (Fort Garry Campus) Abstract: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often identified by the presence of subdural and/or sub-arachnoid hemorrhages that develop from ruptured cortical vessels during brain-skull displacement. The pia-arachnoid complex (PAC) serves as a mechanical tether between the brain and skull, and likely influences the development of these hemorrhages during head trauma. Finite element (FE) modeling of the head, brain, and skull is used to investigate TBI, but most investigations fail to represent the complex substructures of the PAC. Using an innovative application of optical coherence tomography (OCT), we characterized the variability of the PAC substructure density across the brain and used the microsctructural information to develop a multiscale finite element model for predicting intracranial hemorrhage associated with rapid rotations of the head. This multiscale approach has increased our overall accuracy for predicting hemorrhages in TBI from 80-85% to 94-100%. More importantly, it has improved regional predictions of hemorrhage from 63-88% to 86-100%. Biosketch: Dr. Brittany Coats is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah, with Adjunct Assistant Professor affiliations in Bioengineering and Pediatrics. She completed her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah and then went on to earn her PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Her post-doctoral work, evaluating the effect of repetitive head trauma in an animal model, was in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Her current research interests focus on characterizing biological structures of the head and eye as they change with age, and identifying how these mechanical changes influence injury. Bannatyne Campus Brief Biosketch: Dr. Jean-Eric Ghia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Immunology and Internal Medicine section of Gastroenterology at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. He is also Director, Gastrointestinal Basic Biology Research, at the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Clinical and Research Centre. Dr. Ghia completed his B.Sc in Neurophysiology, M.Sc in Pharmacology, Clinical Trail Investigator Diploma and Ph.D in Neurosciences at the University of Strasbourg, France. To further build on his expertise, he moved to McMaster University to train with Dr. Stephen M Collins, a world authority in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. Dr. Ghia obtained several research awards and prizes, including a prize from the prestigious l'Institut de France and a fellowship from the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and the Canadian Institute of Health research. Speaker #1: Essi Shams, MSc Candidate (University of Manitoba BME Graduate Program) Title: MR compatible PET detectors, performance and stability Time: 5:30-6:00 PM Date: Thursday, September 25, 2014 Location: E2-330 Engineering Building (Fort Garry Campus) Abstract: The Biomedical Imaging Lab at the U of M is building a MR compatible PET system to enable simultaneous PET-MR imaging of small animals inside a 7T animal MR imaging system. The output and characteristics of detectors in this system vary with temperature and supply voltage. I this talk, I will describe the evolution of MR-compatible PET systems and make a case for the development of a control system to monitor the detector in such an imaging system and stabilize their output. Results from our MR compatible PET system will be presented. Biosketch: Essi Shams is a M.Sc. student in biomedical engineering with a background as a computer engineer. Before joining the biomedical engineering program, he has worked as a technical support engineer, lead technical trainer and system developer. At the University of Manitoba, he has been working on a network-based control system for a MR compatible PET insert. Speaker #2: Vanessa Palmer, MSc Candidate (University of Manitoba BME Graduate Program) Title: A Proposed Solution to the 'Clinical - Radiological Paradox' associated with Multiple Sclerosis Time: 6:00-6:30 PM Date: Thursday, September 25, 2014 Location: E2-330 Engineering Building (Fort Garry Campus) Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS), the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada, is a demyelinating disease that is unpredictable and often disabling. Despite considerable research effort, the etiology of the disease is unknown and there is no known cure. A reason for this gap in knowledge is the "clinical-radiological paradox," or limited correlation between the clinical signs and symptoms of MS and the changes seen on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Quantitative MRI such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), magnetization transfer imaging (MTI) and multicomponent T2 analysis (mcT2) show promise in understanding changes in white matter integrity associated with MS but more work is needed to understand the correlations between the MRI metrics and the pathological changes. We hypothesize that the correlations between MRI findings and clinical status can be improved through correlations between qMRI metrics and pathological changes. Understanding how these MRI metrics vary with changes in white matter integrity improves our understanding of demyelinating diseases such as MS allowing us to understand what processes need to be targeted for treatments. Hello neuroscientists: We've heard the message from members of the Manitoba Neuroscience Network that networking and interaction could be enhanced by holding events that have a social element to them. With that in mind, we will schedule all visiting speakers this academic year on Friday afternoon from 3-4. In addition, the MNN will host a reception immediately after these talks at 4:00 in the Canad Inn Health Sciences Centre. At these receptions, there will be snacks served and the MNN will provide you with a drink ticket for beer or wine. This Friday, September 19 is our first session. The speaker is Dr. Cindi Morshead from the University of Toronto (announcement attached). Hello everyone, I hope you all had an enjoyable summer! As we begin this new academic year, I would like to give you an update on the outreach events and opportunities that Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience has developed over the last several months. Neuroscience Speaker's Bureau Our Neuroscience Speaker's Bureau continues to take shape, and thank you to everyone who has submitted the online form. This information will also be used to populate the outreach section of the new MNN website, so if you do it now, you won't have to do it again! Brain Awareness Week - Visit by Dr. Matthew Farrer Brain Awareness Week will be held March 16-22, 2015, and as part of this event I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting CERC chair Dr. Matthew Farrer from UBC. He will be giving both scientific and public talks, and further details about his visit will be distributed as they become available. Brain Awareness Week - Café Scientifique On March 18th, 2015, also during BAW, the Chapter will be co-sponsoring a session in the Café Scientifique series with the Office of the VP Research: http://umanitoba.ca/research/cafescientifique/media/Cafe_Schedule.pdf . The session is entitled, "Keeping Your Head in the Game: How Concussions Affect the Brain". The Chapter has made a commitment to co-sponsor a neuroscience-themed Café Scientifique for the next 2-3 years, so if you have ideas for future topics and panelists, please feel free to contact me. Art of Neuroscience - Manitoba Craft Council On a very different note, we have initiated a collaboration with the Manitoba Craft Council to create neuroscience-themed art pieces. Those of you who have attended the SFN annual meeting may have seen the "Art of Neuroscience" display, which is the inspiration for this program: http://www.sfn.org/News-and-Calendar/News-and-Calendar/News/Spotlight/2013/…. Members will have the opportunity to collaborate directly with local artists working in a variety of media, and we hope that this will be a unique and enriching experience for you.
