Opportunity to host Master's research project students from France

Dear Colleagues, Many of you will have heard that several biomedical sciences departments are getting together to propose a new Master of Neuroscience. This will be a dual degree offered by the UM and the University of Strasbourg in France. We are aiming for the first official enrollment of students on the UM side for September 2026. This is mostly a course-based program, unlike existing thesis-based MSc programs. One of the hallmark features will be student mobility between the two universities for the purpose of completing a 6-month research project. Each year between January and June, 12 students from Strasbourg will be placed in labs at the UM. This is the final degree requirement. The first 12 students are expected in Manitoba in January 2028. However, we and our Strasbourg partners would like to roll this process out gradually between now and then. Accordingly, we are looking for a few Principal Investigators who would like to host a project student from Strasbourg between January and June 2026. There will need to be a defined project and mentorship provided. Each student will need to prepare a final paper and defend it. They call this a thesis in France. We would call it a major research paper. By the time they arrive, students will have received the equivalent of 4.5 credit hours of hands-on neuroscience laboratory instruction in Strasbourg and 40.5 credit hours of diverse course instruction in the neurosciences. You will not need to pay a stipend for these students during this phase. If you have any questions or would like to host a student in January 2026, please email me. Thank you for your help. Dear MNN community: I have received a question regarding Abstract format for MNN annual meeting. While there is no fixed format for a scientific abstract, here are some suggestions for a scientific abstract. If you already have submitted an abstract, we will accept it as it is and there is no need to replace it. Also as you are submitting your abstracts through the Oxford Abstracts portal, you can select any category (1-3). That feature should have been inactivated. Please disregard it. The body of abstracts should not be longer than 250 words. Suggested format: "These are the basic components of an abstract in any discipline: 1. Motivation/problem statement: What are you studying? Why do we care about the problem? What practical, scientific gap is your research filling? 2. Methods/ approach: What did you actually do to get your results? Examples include the species, age, and sex of experimental subjects and whether sex differences were assessed. Summarize efforts to ensure scientific rigor, including sample sizes and replication, blinding, and which controls were used. There is no requirement to include full experimental protocols, but sufficient information must be given to indicate how the experiments were performed. 3. Results: As a result of completing the above procedure, what did you learn? State a clear description of the outcome measures to support any conclusion you wish to make. If numerical data are presented as mean values, the standard deviations or standard errors should be given; the form used, and the n values should be stated. When statistical significance is shown, name the statistical test. Data may be conveyed by a combination of Methods and Results, i.e. an outline of the technique followed by the data obtained. Specific details about procedure and results are omitted unless they are very important. 4. Conclusion/implications: State the conclusion(s) supported by the results above, without including any metrics (numbers should be restricted to the sentences described above). What are the larger implications of your findings, especially for the problem/gap identified in step 1? Include consequences/impact of the research in the field." Nick was a true inspiration to his laboratory partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always excel. His insistence to always try better has had a permanent effect on his lab mates and peers. Nick led by example and taught that detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results. Purpose: The purpose of this fund shall be to recognize a young investigator(s) (specifically in the neuroscience area) by providing an annual award(s) to support travel costs associated with the applicant's attendance at an upcoming national/international conference where the applicant is presenting a poster or oral presentation. This year, award(s) are available with a value of up to $750. Eligibility: At the time of application, the following conditions are required: * Students must be registered as a full-time graduate student in the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. * The area of research being presented at the conference must relate to the field of neuroscience. * A student admitted under the "Provisional Status" may not receive the award during the provisional period. * Number of award(s) may vary each year. * Students must be giving an "IN-PERSON" poster or oral presentation at an upcoming scientific meeting (national/international). Virtual attendance does not qualify for award. * Students who have received this award previously should not apply. Announcing MNN Travel Awards for Neuroscience Projects

We are pleased to announce that the Manitoba Neuroscience Network will again be accepting applications for 2025/26 TRAVEL AWARDS FOR NEUROSCIENCE PROJECTS. The travel awards are sponsored by the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology (legacy funds from estates of Nancy Hettie Clark and Viktor Havlicek) and MNN . Four travel awards of up to $750 each are intended to be awarded annually to a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba. The application deadline is April 15th. The eligible travel period is between April 1st, 2025 and March 31st, 2026. Eligibility: Eligible trainees are either graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. Student candidates must be enrolled as full-time graduate students (PhD or MSc) in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba, and have a cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.5 or greater (University of Manitoba scale). Postdoctoral fellow candidates must be within five years of having been awarded their Ph.D. and have a full-time appointment at the University of Manitoba or an affiliated hospital or institute. All candidates must demonstrate excellent research performance and potential in a neurosciences-related discipline, and must demonstrate they will disseminate research results that reflect a high-quality contribution by The University of Manitoba. In addition to supporting travel to present work at a national/international conference, applications to attend a neuroscience workshop will also be considered. MNN Winnipeg Brain Bee Event Volunteers for Judges and Workshop Leaders

Good morning everyone, I hope you are all doing well. On Saturday, March 8th, 2025 we will be hosting our annual Winnipeg Brain Bee and I would like to ask if you would be willing to serve as judges, workshop leaders, or both as you have in previous years. We currently have about 40 students signed up, and I am still waiting to hear from one of the schools, so the numbers could be somewhat higher, which means that we will definitely need a full complement of volunteers. The event will be on the Bannatyne campus; in the Apotex Building. The format will be identical to last year. Competition will take place first; with judges (one PI and 1 student per room of ~ 8-12 students). Then there will be a lunch over a guest lecture. Then workshops taking place from 1-2:30– pending on volunteer labs leading them. The judges will be required in the morning from 9:30-11:30 am. The workshops will take place from 1-2:30 pm, so we request the workshop leaders to be available from 12:30- 2:30. Volunteers helping in all other capacity will be required to be there from 9:00-3:00pm. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in participating this year and in what role(s) – volunteer (any assigned task), workshop leader or judge. All volunteers will receive of co-curricular recognition for their work. If you would like to do something new in your workshop this year, go for it!
