The first 2 of these new courses (IMED7112 and IMED7114) have been offered during the Fall 2018 semester. I wanted to remind you that the next two 1.5 credit hour courses will be offered in the upcoming Winter 2019 session (Jan - Apr 2019). They are: "IMED7116 - Fundamental Systems Neuroscience" (Jan - Feb 2019) and "IMED7118 - Fundamental Neurobiology of Disease" (Mar - Apr 2019) Please see the attached notice for more information (and please print it / post it to help make sure all prospective students know about it!). Hello all, In continuation of our SCRC Journal Club seminar series this year we will resume our weekly meetings on Friday November the 9th, 2018. Kindly find attached the schedule for the 2018-2019 SCRC Journal club series. You will notice we will have some invited speakers in addition to trainees. Please note our new time and location - 11am to noon on Fridays in room 405 of Brodie Centre. In our view the main objectives of having a journal club are: 1. Develop and hone critical thinking skills. 2. Develop a breadth of knowledge in the sciences related to spinal cord injury. 3. Creating a platform for the trainees and PIs to interact and get to know some possible collaborators. To meet these objectives and increase the possibility of interaction we are tweaking the format: The presentation should be about a recent journal article or more, relevant to the students' project. When presenting a paper questions that can be addressed by the student: a. Why this paper is of interest? b. What did this paper add to the field? c. What are the shortcomings of the work? d. What can be done differently or be the next step from this paper? e. The presenter can use the paper to segue into their own data and techniques. The journal club may be used to present data if the need arises such as to get feedback on the direction of the trainee's work or alternative understanding of their results. It is expected of each trainee to be prepared to present in their allotted time. In case of unavoidable circumstances, trainees can arrange to switch their scheduled talks with another presenter and inform me of any changes as soon as possible. Chen Professor of Bioengineering and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He is known for creating and developing the technologies of CLARITY and optogenetics, and for applying integrated optical and genetic strategies to study normal neural circuit function as well as dysfunction in neurological and psychiatric disease. He has led the Deisseroth laboratory since 2004. Based in the James H. Clark Center at Stanford, the lab employs a range of techniques including neural stem cell and tissue engineering methods, electrophysiology, molecular biology, neural activity imaging, animal behavior, and computational neural network modeling. Dr. Deisseroth serves as an attending physician at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, and has been affiliated with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2009. Since 2014 he is a foreign Adjunct Professor at Swedens prestigious Karolinska medical institute. She completed her B.Sc. in Biochemistry in 2006 and Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 2012 at the University of Manitoba. She then moved to the University of Zurich in Switzerland for a postdoctoral position. Jills research is focussed on calcium signaling in two different brain cells: astrocytes and pericytes. She uses novel genetic tools and in vivo two-photon microscopy to study these cells with the aim of understanding the mechanisms that regulate calcium and the functional relevance of calcium signaling, particularly during synaptic modulation (astrocytes) and the regulation of blood flow (pericytes). Her work has been published in high impact journals, and she has received several awards including Heart and Stroke Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship and the CIHR Brain Star Award (2013). Abstract: Cannabis is a widely used recreational drug, for which the majority of users state that they use it to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. THC from cannabis exerts its effect via interactions with the endocannabinoid system. My research has sought to understand the neural mechanisms and circuits by which endocannabinoid signaling can influence stress responses and emotional behaviour, which in turn, can be helped to form a framework to understand how cannabis can modulate these processes. This seminar will detail the current state of knowledge regarding how endocannabinoid signaling influences stress-induced changes in neural activity to modulate neuroendocrine and behavioural outputs of the stress response. Appreciate that endolysosomes contain readily releasable stores of cations including iron and calcium. 2. Discuss specific examples of inter-organellar signaling. 3. Know that de-acification of endolysosomes profoundly affects endolysosome structure, distribution and function. 4. Appreciate that endolysosome pH and cation release from endolysosomes are early and upstream events central to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases including HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorder and Alzheimer’s disease. B I O S K E T C H After two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba (’ 82-’84), I accepted a faculty position in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Manitoba where I remained for 19 years (‘84-‘03) rising to the rank of Professor and Founding Director (‘99- ‘03) of the Division of Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Diseases at the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre. From July 2003 to July 2013 I served as Chair of the UND Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Therapeutics. From July 2003 to present I continue to serve as Principal Investigator on our NIGMS-funded neuroscience center grant. In addition, from July 2010 to July 2013 I served as Interim Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. I have consistently held multiple federal operating grants simultaneously throughout my career, and I received highly prestigious Scholarship and Scientist awards (separate grants that pay an investigator’s salary independent of research operating grants) from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. I am currently funded by one P30 NIGMS grant, two five-year R01 NIMH grants, one R21 NIDA grant, and hold the position of Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor. The main focus of my research continues to be on brain energy metabolism in general and purines in particular, regulation of levels of intracellular calcium with emphasis on intracellular pools of calcium, the control of neuronal cell life and death in neurodegenerative diseases, and neurological complications associated with HIV-1 infection. Currently, my laboratory has the following research interests: (1) The role of brain energy metabolism (with particular emphasis on adenosine and ATP) in the pathogenesis of epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases and the ability of ketogenic diets to protect against these pathophysiological responses; (2) The role of endolysosome dysfunction in animals models of Alzheimer’s disease and HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorder; (3) The protective actions of caffeine in animal models of neurodegenerative disorders; and (4) The ability of calcium in endolysosomes to influence capacitative influx of calcium and calcium-induced calcium release. I have published over 150 manuscripts and have delivered over 100 invited talks worldwide. I have served on over 120 local, national and international grant review study sections including those for the NIH (I am currently serving a 6-year term as a standing member of the NAED study section) and I have served as Chair or co-Chair on over 20 of these panels. I am now serving as Chair of the NAED study section for the next 2 years. I have extensive mentoring experience. Since 2000, as a Director or Department Chair I hired 11 new faculty members. I have graduated seven Ph.D. and four M.S. students from my laboratory and trained 17 postdoctoral fellows, research associates and visiting professors as well as 48 undergraduate students, medical and dental students, and technicians. I have also served on and been President of major advisory boards as well as on many high level committees for UND. I currently serve on advisory boards for two COBRE grants, and I serve on the North Dakota EPSCoR Steering Committee. My publications have been cited over 5,500 times of which about 200 are self-citations. I have published 15 manuscripts that have been cited greater than 80 times and 10 manuscripts have been cited greater than 100 times. My h-index (Scopus) is 45. As we look ahead to September, the MNN has planned an exciting event to kick off the academic year. Award-winning artist Rebecca Kamen will be visiting the University of Manitoba as a guest of the Faculty of Science, and on September 24th, she has graciously agreed to spend the day at the Bannatyne campus interacting with neuroscience researchers and students. As you will read below, Rebecca has a longstanding interest in neuroscience and she has participated in projects at Harvard, MIT, NIH, and the Cajal Institute. Sculpture workshop: 9-11:30 am. Rebecca will lead a workshop in which the participants will work together to model scientific concepts such as synapses and ion channels. Please see the attached outline for details. The workshop is free and no experience is necessary. Individuals and groups are welcome to sign up. Faculty members, please take note that this could be a valuable team-building/brainstorming exercise for your lab. Rebecca will present a lecture focusing on her work and her experiences at the Cajal Institute, where she had the opportunity to study Cajal's original drawings. Meetings with individual researchers. Rebecca will be available for one-on-one meetings in the afternoon. She is very interested in the cellular/molecular basis of curiosity, cognition, decision making, memory, and networks related to visual processing and dyslexia. Wee Yong is a Professor at the University of Calgary, Canada, and the Canada Research Chair in Neuroimmunology. He co-leads the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) NeuroTeam of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary, and he directs the provincial Alberta MS Network. Dr. Yongs research interests lie in the area of neuroimmunology, neuroprotection and CNS regeneration, and his projects are guided by MS and brain tumors. Dr. Yong has published 290 peer-reviewed manuscripts and his research has been translated into Phase III clinical trials in MS and spinal cord injury. His work has been cited over 18,800 times by other authors (web of science; h-index of 76). We are pleased to announce that Crystal Acosta (Supervisor: Hope Anderson) has been awarded this years' St. Boniface Hospital Foundation - Nick Shepel Travel Award (a value of up to $750 CAD). This award will help to cover the travel costs associated with Crystal's attendance at the national Society for Neuroscience Meeting to present a research poster. Congrats Crystal! The Nick Shepel fund was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre, to honor Nick Shepel who was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true inspiration to his laboratory partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always excel. His insistence to always try better has had a permanent effect on his lab mates and peers. Wee Yong is a Professor at the University of Calgary, Canada, and the Canada Research Chair in Neuroimmunology. He co-leads the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) NeuroTeam of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary, and he directs the provincial Alberta MS Network. Dr. Yong’s research interests lie in the area of neuroimmunology, neuroprotection and CNS regeneration, and his projects are guided by MS and brain tumors. Dr. Yong has published 290 peer-reviewed manuscripts and his research has been translated into Phase III clinical trials in MS and spinal cord injury. His work has been cited over 18,800 times by other authors (web of science; h-index of 76). Dr. Yong is a past chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of the MS Society of Canada; this and other volunteer activities resulted in him receiving the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Year Medallion. Dr. Yong is on the editorial board of 7 international journals; he is the Honorary Editor-in-Chief of the journal Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation. He has been the President of the International Society of Neuroimmunology (2014-2016). Dr. Yong is an elected fellow of both the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada. For many years, researchers have been trying to find the causes and possible therapies for the diverse neurodegenerative pathologies. Yet, distinguishing between the causes and the consequences of neurodegeneration is difficult, as all the symptoms and markers get tangled in an array of phenotypes. The most accepted theory of aging is that the accumulation of unrepaired DNA damage is the main cause: As we age, we accumulate DNA lesions, until we reach a threshold of irreparable lesions. The histone deacetylase SIRT6 has been linked to the aging process. SIRT6 knockout mice exhibit an accelerated aging phenotype and die prematurely. SIRT6 promotes DNA repair, but its activity declines with age with a concomitant accumulation of DNA damage. We report that brain-specific SIRT6-deficient mice survive but present behavioral defects with major learning impairments by 4 months of age. Moreover, the brains of these mice show increased signs of DNA damage, cell death, and hyperphosphorylated Tau-a critical mark in several neurodegenerative diseases. Mechanistically, SIRT6 regulates Tau protein stability and phosphorylation through increased activation of the kinase GSK3��/��. Finally, SIRT6 mRNA and protein levels are reduced in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Taken together, our results suggest that SIRT6 is critical to maintain genomic stability in the brain and that its loss leads to toxic Tau stability and phosphorylation. Therefore, SIRT6 and its downstream signaling could be targeted in Alzheimer's disease and age-related neurodegeneration. His work examined how motor circuits were affected following spinal cord injury and exercise by examining alterations in motoneuron biophysical properties, stretch reflexes, gene expression and sensitivity to pharmacological agents. Currently, he is a post-doctoral fellow at Dalhousie University (2014-), Department of Medical Neuroscience working with both Dr. Zhang and Dr. Brownstone at University College London. His work has began to characterize and understand microcircuit formation in both the medulla reticular formation, a centre vital for the initiation of movement and the lumbar spinal cord, the area in which movement is produced. To achieve this, he uses a combination of transgenic mouse lines, optogenetic or photo-manipulation of single cell or whole cell populations, in-vitro electrophysiology, viral tracers and 2P and confocal microscopy. To date, he has subdivided the chx10 neuronal population in the brainstem into two distinct cell populations based on their morphology, biophysical properties, connectivity and projection patterns. In addition, he has also found a novel connectivity pattern of the spinal V3 interneuron population, which in addition to forming commissural connections also synapse locally with ipsilateral motoneurons. Eftekhar's research focuses on mechanisms of neuronal cell death in models of and neurotrauma and neurodegenerative diseases. By examining the contribution of oxidative stress in induction of cell death, his lab aims to develop novel neuroprotective approaches to inhibit functional deficits in these conditions. Eftekhar received his PhD degree in neurosciences from the University of Saskatchewan in 2001, and then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship in spinal cord injury and stem cell research at the University of Toronto and the Toronto Western Hospital. During his training, he was supported by a postdoctoral fellowship from The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and has received several awards including a Synthes Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Eftekhar joined the University of Manitoba in 2010, and started his research lab in 2012 at the Spinal Cord Research Centre. His research has been published in top-tier journals including J. Neuroscience, GLIA and Free Radical in Biology and Medicine Journal. He is currently holding international research grants from The Paralyzed Veterans of America and the European Wings for Life Foundation. His work examined how motor circuits were affected following spinal cord injury and exercise by examining alterations in motoneuron biophysical properties, stretch reflexes, gene expression and sensitivity to pharmacological agents. Currently, he is a post-doctoral fellow at Dalhousie University (2014-), Department of Medical Neuroscience working with both Dr. Zhang and Dr. Brownstone at University College London. His work has began to characterize and understand microcircuit formation in both the medulla reticular formation, a centre vital for the initiation of movement and the lumbar spinal cord, the area in which movement is produced. To achieve this, he uses a combination of transgenic mouse lines, optogenetic or photo-manipulation of single cell or whole cell populations, in-vitro electrophysiology, viral tracers and 2P and confocal microscopy. To date, he has subdivided the chx10 neuronal population in the brainstem into two distinct cell populations based on their morphology, biophysical properties, connectivity and projection patterns. In addition, he has also found a novel connectivity pattern of the spinal V3 interneuron population, which in addition to forming commissural connections also synapse locally with ipsilateral motoneurons. /sent on behalf of Paul Fernyhough Nick Shepel Neuroscience Trainee Travel Award Application deadline: June 15, 2018 The fund was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre, to honor Nick Shepel who was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true inspiration to his laboratory partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always excel. His insistence to always try better has had a permanent effect on his lab mates and peers. Nick led by example and taught that detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results. Purpose: The purpose of this fund shall be to recognize a young investigator (specifically in the neuroscience area) by providing an annual award(s) to support travel costs associated with the applicant's attendance at an upcoming national/international conference where the applicant is presenting a poster or oral presentation. This year, the value of the award may range from $300-600. The Manitoba Neuroscience Network would like to make you aware of important upcoming deadlines: 1) TRAVEL AWARDS FOR NEUROSCIENCE PROJECTS NOW DUE MAY 20 The deadline for applications for Nancy Hettie Clark travel awards has been EXTENDED to MAY 20, 2018. Two travel awards of up to $700 each will be awarded to a PhD student and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba. The eligible travel period is between May 1, 2018 and April 30, 2019. Eligible trainees are either PhD students or postdoctoral fellows. Student candidates must have a cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.5 or greater (University of Manitoba scale). Postdoctoral fellows must be within five years of receiving a doctoral degree. Candidates must demonstrate excellent research performance and potential in a neurosciences-related discipline, and must demonstrate they will disseminate research results that reflect a high-quality contribution by The University of Manitoba. They are looking for graduate students who would be willing to take small groups of high schools students on tours of the Bannatyne campus before the day's activities begin. They are looking for a minimum of 2 tour guides, and the tours will take place from 8:15-8:45 am. FINAL REMINDER- We are pleased to announce that the Manitoba Neuroscience Network will again be accepting applications for 2018/19 TRAVEL AWARDS FOR NEUROSCIENCE PROJECTS A legacy fund created by the estate of Nancy Hettie Clark is used to enrich neuroscience training and support opportunities to network within the wider neuroscience community. The MNN is pleased to announce that the 2018 Scientific Meeting will be held JUNE 15. The meeting is co-chaired by Drs. Debbie Kelly, Jonathan Marotta and Mark Fry and will be held in the EITC Complex at the Fort Garry Campus of the University of Manitoba. There is a fabulous program planned, featuring a visit and talk by Dr. Lisa Saksida, Scientific Director of BrainsCAN Initiative at Western University. (Biochemistry) from the University of Alberta and received his Ph.D. (Oncology) at the Cross Cancer Institute and the University of Alberta. His post-doctoral training, at St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, in the area of DNA damage and repair in neurodevelopment and neuro-oncology was done in the lab of Dr. Peter McKinnon; work that led to publications in internationally-renowned journals such as Nature, Nature Neuroscience and EMBO J. In 2013, Dr. Katyal began his independent academic research position at the University of Manitoba and CancerCare Manitoba where he is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics (D-PT) and, a Senior Scientist within the Research Institute of Oncology and Hematology (RIOH). Dr. Katyals research is CIHR- and TFRI-funded; he is the recipient of the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research 2014 Early Career Award in Cancer Research, a CIHR New Investigator award and most recently a TFRI New Investigator Award to counteract resistant Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). He serves on several scientific review committees for international academic journals and grant review panels. Sachin has also established industrial partnerships, which have facilitated the development of innovative technology and methodology to accelerate his DNA damage repair research program. These were instrumental for his recently-funded CFI infrastructure award to develop a novel high-throughput genotoxicity and drug screening facility to understand and identify new therapies against brain tumours and leukemia. Sachin is also actively involved in trainee development, mentorship and career progression through various University-wide initiatives, courses and workshops. L E A R N I N G O B J E C T I V E S 1. To understand the function of DNA damage repair pathways during neurodevelopment. 2. To identify biochemical (DNA repair) mechanisms that cancerous cells use to mitigate the effectiveness of chemotherapeutics in neural tumours. 3. MNN Travel Awards 2018/19

We are pleased to announce that the Manitoba Neuroscience Network will again be accepting applications for 2018/19 TRAVEL AWARDS FOR NEUROSCIENCE PROJECTS A legacy fund created by the estate of Nancy Hettie Clark is used to enrich neuroscience training and support opportunities to network within the wider neuroscience community. Two travel awards of up to $700 each are intended to be awarded annually to a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba. The application deadline is MAY 1. The eligible travel period is between May 1, 2018 and April 30, 2019, BUT all eligible travel claims must be complete by March 31, 2019. Eligibility: Eligible trainees are either graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. Student candidates must be enrolled as full-time Ph.D. students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba, and have a cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.5 or greater (University of Manitoba scale). Postdoctoral fellow candidates must be within the first five years after awarding of their doctoral degree and have a full-time appointment at the University of Manitoba or an affiliated hospital or institute. Candidates must demonstrate excellent research performance and potential in a neurosciences-related discipline, and must demonstrate they will disseminate research results that reflect a high-quality contribution by The University of Manitoba. Student volunteers needed for Neurotalks career day!

I am writing to ask for volunteers to help with the Neurotalks career day for high school students that we are organizing in conjunction with the undergraduate students from Let's Talk Science at Fort Garry. Neurotalks will be held Thursday, May 3rd at the Bannatyne campus. I am looking for 2 students to participate in a career panel that will take place from roughly 3:15-3:45 pm that afternoon. You will be part of a group of 7 people that includes faculty members and medical residents, and you will answer questions from the high school students about university and graduate school. I especially encourage those of you who went to U of M to take part, as many of these students will likely be applying to come here and will be interested in learning more about what U of M is like.
