There biographies are included below: Brett Dalman, BSc. Brett graduated with a Bachelor of Science, Major Microbiology with a minor in zoology in the Co-op Program from the University of Manitoba. During university, she participated in the co-op program gaining experience with Miraculins (a biotech company working on cancer), and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Upon graduation, she continued to work at the CFIA as a permanent technician working with high containment viruses for research and diagnostics applications. In 2010, she began the next stage in her career and became a Sales Representative, for the distribution company VWR, dealing with a variety of accounts and product lines. In 2014, she was approached to join a more specialized company as a Territory Manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific where she relies on her scientific degree to better support research labs. Shantel Gushue, MSc. Shantel Gushue graduated with her Bachelor of Science Degree as a ‘Student of Distinction’ from the University of Winnipeg in 2008. Shortly thereafter, she pursued graduate school at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease. After working approximately 10 months as a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba, she landed a position with Fisher Scientific as an Account Manager. Her primary focus is to sell laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment into pharmaceutical, clinical, industrial, academic, and agricultural accounts. Although she initially had little experience in the area of sales and business, she has been very successful and continues to drive sales for the company as well as create long lasting partnerships with both colleagues and customers. S P E A K E R <http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/health_sciences/medicine/units/physiology/con tacts/karimi.html> Dr. Soheila Karimi Associate Professor Department of Physiology & Pathophysiology Senior Scientist, Regenerative Medicine Program Principal Investigator, Spinal Cord Research Center T O P I C Emerging therapeutic targets for spinal cord injury and Multiple Sclerosis B I O Dr. Soheila Karimi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, and the Regenerative Medicine Program, in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of Manitoba. Soheila has had a long-term interest in neural repair and regeneration with a focus on therapeutic development for spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. She received her PhD degree in neurosciences from the University of Saskatchewan in 2001, and then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship in spinal cord injury and stem cell research at the University of Toronto and the Toronto Western Hospital. During her training, Soheila received numerous academic and research awards including a Synthes Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and postdoctoral fellowships from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Her postdoctoral work broke a new ground in spinal cord injury therapeutics by showing that transplantation of neural stem cells can be used therapeutically to promote myelin repair with improved recovery of function in preclinical models. Her seminal work has been instrumental for implementing neural stem cell therapies in human clinical trials that are currently under way. Soheila joined the University of Manitoba in 2010 to help in establishing the Regenerative Medicine Program in Manitoba. Current research in Karimis laboratory focuses on uncovering disease mechanisms and developing regenerative therapies for spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. Using drug delivery, stem cell therapy, genetic manipulations and bioengineering approaches, Karimis team have discovered novel targets that play major roles in regulating cell replacement and myelin repair in these conditions. Karimis team have published their discoveries in top-tier journals such as Stem Cells, Nature, J. Neuroscience, GLIA, J. Neuroinflammation. Karimis research program has been supported by concurrent grants from the CIHR, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, NSERC, Canada Foundation for Innovation, Craig H. Neilsen Foundation in the US, Research Manitoba and the Canadian Paraplegic Association. K A R I M F O UA D C A N A D A R E S E A R C H C H A I R S P I N A L C O R D I N J U R Y T O P I C Promoting plasticity and recovery following spinal cord injury Karim Fouad studied Biology in Germany where he also performed his Graduate studies on motor control of invertebrates. During his time as PDF in Edmonton, with Dr. Pearson he switched to locomotor control in vertebrates, which triggered his interest in neuroplasticity. He expanded his research in the area of injury induced neuroplasticity in the groups of Drs. Schwab and Dietz in Zürich, Switzerland, especially in relation to spinal cord injuries. In 2001 he started his group in at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where he is now a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Physical Therapy, in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Karim Fouads research focuses on repair of the injured spinal cord. This includes combined treatment approaches to regenerate lost connections but also to rewire spared circuitry. He uses rehabilitative training to study, and enhance mechanisms of neuro plasticity, but also as a tool to promote functional recovery when plasticity is pharmacologically enhanced. Recognized worldwide for his pioneering work on digital holographic microscopy, he is a professor of psychiatry at Université Laval and the chairholder of the CERC in Neurophotonics. He is also the director of the International Joint Research Unit (IJRU) in neurodevelopment and child psychiatry. The goal of this IJRU is to identify new risk biomarkers and endophenotypes to define childhood risk syndromes of major psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and major depression disorder with the help of neurophotonics tools. He is the author or co-author of more than 140 scientific publications (6500 citations, h-index 36), of many patents and is the co-founder of three technological start-up companies. MPDs have chronic courses since their diagnoses, solely based on clinical symptoms, are very late and thus better treatments are only palliative. The successful development of early treatment and primary prevention is largely impeded by the lack of reliable risk biomarkers or endophenotypes (B/Es). This is a critical issue since MPDs have a neurodevelopmental origin and early intervention can improve outcomes. >From a developmental standpoint, the identification of B/Es in patients with MPDs and in their offspring at genetic risk will play a pivotal role in the definition of childhood risk syndromes and their corresponding abnormal trajectories. This approach is particularly relevant given that high-risk children carry many of the indicators of brain dysfunctions that adult patients have. Within this framework, I will present how the development of new multimodal optical imaging techniques in combination with stem cell technologies, including human induced pluripotent stem cells approaches, can contribute to identifying new cellular B/Es relevant both to define childhood risk syndromes and to determine cellular processes likely to be involved in the pathogenesis of these MPDs. /Sent on behalf of Dr. Ji Hyun Ko Dear all, As part of Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series (4pm, Fort Garry campus), I invited Dr. David Eidelberg (March 15th, 2018). He will also give a talk in the Bannatyne campus at noon. David Eidelberg, MD is the Susan and Leonard Feinstein Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience, and has served as Director of the Center for Neurosciences at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research since its founding in 2001. A neurologist and neuroscientist, he is widely regarded for his pioneering work on network dysfunction in brain disease. Under his direction, the Eidelberg group has developed innovative computational approaches using imaging to identify specific network biomarkers for a variety of brain disorders ranging from Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease to Dystonia, Tourette's syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder. Disease-related networks are being assayed in individual patients to distinguish between clinically similar "look-a-like" conditions, monitor disease progression, and evaluate new treatments for these disorders. Dr. Eidelberg received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in neurology there, followed by postdoctoral training in brain imaging in London and New York. Dr. Eidelberg has authored over 250 peer-reviewed original articles, 100 reviews and editorials, and an edited volume (Imaging in Parkinson's Disease, Oxford University Press, 2011). He currently serves on the editorial boards of several major journals, and is editor-in-chief (with Professor Jean-Marc Leger) of Current Opinion in Neurology. He is a scientific advisor to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Defense, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and the Collaborative Center for X-linked Dystonia Parkinsonism at Massachusetts General Hospital. Now, I am trying to develop an itinerary for his visit. Dr. Karim Fouad from the University of Alberta will be speaking on Thursday, March 15th, and on Wednesday, March 14th, we will be hosting Canada Excellence Research Chair Dr. Pierre Marquet from Universite Laval. Dr. Marquet is a world leader in the fields of psychiatry and neurophotonics, and his work combines clinical studies with innovative imaging technologies to identify biomarkers for autism, depression, and bipolar disorder. I encourage you all to attend both lectures. Dr. Marquet will be available for meetings at the Bannatyne campus on Wednesday, March 14th. K A R I M F O UA D C A N A D A R E S E A R C H C H A I R S P I N A L C O R D I N J U R Y T O P I C Promoting plasticity and recovery following spinal cord injury Karim Fouad studied Biology in Germany where he also performed his Graduate studies on motor control of invertebrates. During his time as PDF in Edmonton, with Dr. Pearson he switched to locomotor control in vertebrates, which triggered his interest in neuroplasticity. He expanded his research in the area of injury induced neuroplasticity in the groups of Drs. Schwab and Dietz in Zürich, Switzerland, especially in relation to spinal cord injuries. In 2001 he started his group in at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where he is now a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Physical Therapy, in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Karim Fouads research focuses on repair of the injured spinal cord. This includes combined treatment approaches to regenerate lost connections but also to rewire spared circuitry. He uses rehabilitative training to study, and enhance mechanisms of neuro plasticity, but also as a tool to promote functional recovery when plasticity is pharmacologically enhanced. Winnipeg Brain Bee - volunteers needed!

cid:image001.jpg@01D158FE.B69B8D00 Good morning everyone, We will be hosting our 4th annual Winnipeg Brain Bee on Saturday, March 10th. This event has grown tremendously in the last several years, and this year we are expecting our largest number of participants to date - 65 students! We have a dedicated group of faculty and student volunteers who have been instrumental in the Brain Bee's success, and I am very grateful to all of them. They will be back again this year, but with this many students, we are going to need more help. I am therefore looking for additional volunteers to serve in the following roles: 1. One faculty member to serve as a judge for the preliminary round of the competition (unfortunately trainees cannot serve as judges). Judges are responsible for administering the questions and judging the competitors responses. This will be a roughly 1.5 hour time commitment from 9:30-11 am on March 10th, plus some set-up time the day before. 2. One faculty member (preferably), postdoc, or student to give presentations on their research as part of our afternoon activities. This will be a 20-25 minute presentation that will be repeated several times as groups of students rotate through the different workshops. It can be a formal talk about your research. It can be a tour of your lab or imaging facility. It can be a demonstration of a technique. This will be a 2.5 hour time commitment from 1-3:30 pm on March 10th, plus whatever set-up time you require. 3. Two graduate students or postdocs to serve as scorekeepers and guides. Scorekeepers are paired up with judges to score the preliminary and final rounds. As guides you will be responsible for meeting the students when they arrive and escorting them around the Bannatyne campus. This is a full day commitment that will last from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on March 10th. Lunch will be provided. Enhanced ERV expression has been associated with several inflammatory diseases; yet the mechanism behind their induction is poorly understood. ERVK is implicated in the neurological disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Our laboratory has shown that specific inflammatory signals can promote the re-activation of dormant ERVK elements within human astrocytes and neurons. Increased expression of ERVK relies on inflammatory transcription factors binding to the viral promoter. Inflammatory signals are also sufficient to promote viral polyprotein cleavage, leading to the formation of functional viral proteins, such as the integrase enzyme. ERVK integrase drives cellular DNA damage, as well as inhibits innate immunity, revealing mechanisms by which ERVK contributes to select disease processes. The exhibition will be on display at the new C2 Centre for Craft from March 2nd to 31st. The MNN, together with the Manitoba Craft Council and the University of Manitoba, will be hosting an opening reception on Friday, March 2nd from 5-9 pm. You and your families are cordially invited to attend (if you're going to the Jets game, drop by on your way to the rink!). Opening remarks will be at 7 pm, followed by wine and cheese. The C2 Centre for Craft is located at 329 Cumberland Avenue in downtown Winnipeg and there is plenty of parking in the area. In addition to the Neurocraft show, you will also have the opportunity to view the collection of the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library and visit the new retail shop that is located in the C2 Centre. We use electrophysiological measurements in acute hippocampal slices with rapid presynaptic two-photon calcium imaging and experimentally-constrained modelling to study the mechanism by which mossy finer terminals in the hippocampus translate granule cell firing to postsynaptic signals. Our aim is to elucidate how a mossy fiber boutons integrate incoming bursts of action potentials to propagate information to CA3 pyramidal neurones. Bio: Katalin Tóth earned her PhD in 1995 from the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, under the supervision of Tamás F. Freund, after completing an undergraduate degree in Biology. She then spent the next 2 years as postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Richard Miles at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, and studied the properties of synaptic interactions between connected pairs of neurons. Volunteers needed for Neurotalks career day

/sent on behalf of Dr. Sari Hannila Hello everyone, Best wishes to all of you for a happy and productive 2018! You will be hearing about our upcoming outreach events for Brain Awareness Week over the next several weeks, but today I am writing to ask for your help with an event that will be happening slightly later in the year. Last year at the MNN meeting, I was approached by one of the leaders of Let's Talk Science - a student-run science outreach organization based at the U of M Fort Garry campus. Every year they host a science career day for high school students that focuses on a particular field. This year, they want to feature neuroscience and I'm excited to announced that we will be hosting "Neurotalks" at the U of M Bannatyne campus on Thursday, May 3rd! As part of this event, we will be hosting hands-on workshops for the students, and I am looking for volunteers to lead 4 different neuroscience-themed workshops that afternoon. The workshops can be led by individuals or by a group. Grad students and postdocs, you can lead these workshops if you wish! Just be sure to speak with your supervisor first - especially if you will be using your lab space, equipment, or materials. Here are the details and guidelines: 1. The workshops will be held from roughly 12-3 pm on May 3rd. The students will rotate through each workshop over the course of the afternoon, so you will repeat your activity four times. 2. Each workshop session should be approximately 30 minutes in length. 3. We anticipate that there will be 20-25 students in each group (max). 4. You are responsible for providing all of the materials required for your workshop. 5. Regarding the content, it can be anything you want! Just ensure that the content is appropriate for high school students. Workshops focusing on clinical subjects are most welcome! 6. A qualifier to the statement above: no live animals and no blood. If you want to use prepared tissues or cells, that's absolutely fine. I'm sure the students would enjoy recording from patch-clamped neurons! 7. Try to make the workshop as interactive and hands-on as possible. I'm sending this message now because if you are thinking of developing a workshop, you can pilot it during the Winnipeg Brain Bee in March. We would love to have some new activities for the Brain Bee this year! For those of you who have done workshops for Health Sciences Discovery Day, you are very welcome to modify those workshops for Neurotalks. Please send me the title and description of your workshop at your earliest convenience, along with a list of the members of your group (if applicable). There is no firm deadline, but if you would like to hold a pilot workshop during the Brain Bee, your plans should be in place by mid-February. Thank you all for your participation. Biosketch: Originally from Mashad, Khorasan, Iran, Dr. Ghavami has received his Bachelor of Chemistry degree from Shiraz University, Iran in 1989. He then completed his Master of Science and PhD degree in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry at Tarbiat Modarres University, Iran in 1996 and 2004 in Clinical Biochemsitry. Prior to joining to the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science, University of Manitoba in October 2013 as an Assistant Professor, Dr. Ghavami worked as a Post Doctoral Fellow in CancerCare Manitoba, Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology and St. Boniface Research Centre at the University of Manitoba for 9 years (2004-2013) and has built his research career on the effects of cellular stress in the regulation of cellular fate. Currently Dr. Ghavami is an Assistant Professor and Principal investigator and one of his major research focus is developing new therapeutic approaches in glioblastoma multiform, based on modification of apoptosis, autophagy, and unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway via cholesterol metabolism pathway. Manitoba HSC Campus (Apotex Ctr. 061) Dr Wang's lab will present the paper: Apolipoprotein E4 Elicits Lysosomal Cathepsin D Release, Decreased Thioredoxin-1 Levels, and Apoptosis ABSTRACT The major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4), has been suggested to have detrimental effects on neurons, including direct toxicity via apoptosis. Thioredoxin-1 (Trx1) is an endogenous antioxidant protein important for redox regulation and participates in the regulation of apoptosis through the inhibition of apoptosis signalregulating kinase-1 (Ask-1). In this study, we have investigated the effects of ApoE on Trx1 in the brain. Our results showed that the protein levels of Trx1 were reduced in the hippocampus of ApoE4 targeted replacement (TR) mice compared to ApoE3 TR mice. The reduction was also seen in vitro after treatment of both human primary cortical neurons and neuroblastoma cells with human recombinant ApoE4 (rApoE4). Furthermore, ApoE4 caused a disruption of lysosomal integrity and a shift in the localization of Cathepsin D, an enzyme known to degrade Trx1. ApoE4 treatment induced in addition apoptosis through translocation of Death-domain associated protein-6 (Daxx) from the nucleus to the cytosol, suggesting an activation of the Ask-1 pathway. This toxicity was prevented by overexpression of Trx1 and other endogenous Ask-1 inhibitors. Our data suggests that down-regulation of Trx1 is involved in the toxicity caused by ApoE4. An activated ASK-1 pathway might indeed make cells more vulnerable to other insults such as amyloid-_, which could partially explain the mechanism behind the strongest genetic risk factor for AD.

Soon after, Dr. Marzban joined the University of Manitoba as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science. Dr. Marzban research interests focus on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the developing cerebellum, specifically the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative disease using mouse models (E.g. ACP2 and SNCA mutant lines). Abstract; Cerebellar defects result in significant intellectual and motor function impairment that influences both the patients and their families. My research goal is to understand the cellular and molecular processes of normal and abnormal cerebellar development and how these processes are disrupted in cerebellar defects. I anticipate this fundamental research will provide solid knowledge to elucidate cerebellar disorders, prevent birth-defects and develop therapeutics that will improve the lives of affected individuals. My ongoing research program is focused on early cerebellar circuit formation; early connectivity between cerebellar nuclei neurons and afferent pioneer axon, which is affected in nax (Acp2 -/-) mutant mice as model. In my presentation I will discuss the early pioneer axons to reach the cerebellum arise from the trigeminal system (not vestibular system) and target cerebellar nuclei neurons (not Purkinje cell), initiating the formation of the early cerebellar circuit. It will address a critical knowledge gap by providing essential developmental information that the trigeminal system develops in close proximity to the cerebellum and probably mechanisms that are affected in some cerebellar disorders. We have a great lineup of speakers this year, so we hope that you will come out to support them and hear about their work. I have several updates to share with you regarding our outreach activities. First, I am excited to announce that the MNN and Manitoba Craft Council, in partnership with the University of Manitoba, will be hosting a new Neurocraft exhibition in March, 2018. The exhibition will be held at the C2 Centre for Craft, which is the new home of the MCC and the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library. All of the works from the previous show will be on display, as well as some new pieces. There will be an opening reception on Friday, March 2nd, and the show will run for the entire month in conjunction with Brain Awareness Week. We are also planning to hold some workshops for kids, and I will be sending out a call for volunteers (faculty and students) once the details are finalized. I am also pleased to inform you that Dr. Pierre Marquet, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Neurophotonics, Université Laval, will be our visiting speaker for Brain Awareness Week. Dr. Marquet will be here in Winnipeg on March 14th and 15th, and there will be opportunities to meet with him on both days. Some of you, particularly those of you at U of Ms Fort Garry Campus, may be familiar with Lets Talk Science, a student-run initiative that runs STEM workshops and outreach programs for elementary and high school students. Each year they host a symposium focusing on a single subject, and one of the student leaders has requested our assistance with a neuroscience symposium for next year. NeuroTalks will likely take place in late April or early May, 2018, and should attract approximately 100 students. This will be a great opportunity for us to introduce these students to our field, and I will be looking for faculty and student volunteers to help with career panels and laboratory demonstrations. Once again, details will be forthcoming. Finally, I would like to reiterate that if you have recently published a paper (research or a review), please send us the details so that we can share it on our social media accounts. These posts are seen by literally thousands of people and are a great way to publicize our achievements. Research Profile: Dr. Jeremy Chopek received his MSc (2009) in Kinesiology and PhD (2014) in the Department of Physiology & Pathophysiology, University of Manitoba under the supervision of Dr. Phillip Gardiner, in the Spinal Cord Research Centre. His work examined how motor circuits were affected following spinal cord injury and exercise by examining alterations in motoneuron biophysical properties, stretch reflexes, gene expression and sensitivity to pharmacological agents. Currently, he is a post-doctoral fellow at Dalhousie University (2014-), Department of Medical Neuroscience working with both Dr. Zhang and Dr. Brownstone at University College London. His work has began to characterize and understand microcircuit formation in both the medulla reticular formation, a centre vital for the initiation of movement and the lumbar spinal cord, the area in which movement is produced. To achieve this, he uses a combination of transgenic mouse lines, optogenetic or photo-manipulation of single cell or whole cell populations, in-vitro electrophysiology, viral tracers and 2P and confocal microscopy. To date, he has subdivided the chx10 neuronal population in the brainstem into two distinct cell populations based on their morphology, biophysical properties, connectivity and projection patterns. In addition, he has also found a novel connectivity pattern of the spinal V3 interneuron population, which in addition to forming commissural connections also synapse locally with ipsilateral motoneurons.
